CLEOPATRA DAUGHERTY, A TRUE CHAMPION. tfatl deliberately 68. John Gunther KK' 'WT Y' ' 'f ' T B., - ff 77 The Champion of Champions I 1 Qui' President It's what's up front that counts and up-front for the Coahoma team is head coach, President B. F. McLaurin, Sr. President McLaurin, at times with the chips down, has used unheard of strategy to keep our school a contender of the highest rank in the Junior College bracket. Principal's Message Never before has American education been subject to greater pressure for change than it is today. Its most extreme critics assert that national survival depends upon drastic and instant improvement in the educational system. The shortage of qualified teachers - present and pro- spective - already is forcing numerous unprecedented steps. There is an urgency for more clar- ity in America's educational aims and more steadfastness in educational endeavors. This is highlighted by crucial issues of physical survival, ethical values, and personal responsibility which trouble the world so sorely these days. There are some very simple - yet major - con- tributions we try to make at Coahoma Junior College to the present day new directions and new dimensions. Certainly, we are committed to excellence in all our work at Coahoma Junior College. and this is more than the currently fashionable thing to do in education - it is absolutely basic. We support, through effective participation every responsible effort to make the institution for all students a world of worth - a college of Champions. ln professional teaching we assert our firm determination to serve in a superior manner. The faculty and students of Coahoma Junior College endorse these basic commitments with sincere conviction, and we keep three concerns clearly before us. 1. We are, and must be realistic - never pessimistic - about the facts of our educational life here. 2. Teaching is a labor of love which grows out of a high measure of profes- sional competence. 3. We expect to accentuate superior performance and to do this we insist that any substandard performance at Coahoma Junior College be eliminated. The college and its people have no time to wasteg ours is a serious purpose and we, indeed. try to pursue it honestly and courageously. Within such a national and international frame- work of social, political, and economic opportunity. Coahoma Junior College has given much thought to the nattrre of its increased responsibility. It continues to develop and analyze ideas. We recognize the fact that professional instruction of quality is essential. We have broken new ground by reaching out, by going beyond the conventional concepts of what constitutes the mission of higher learning. We accept as our obligation to do as much as we can, as well as we can, for as many as we can. If we are to accomplish this, we must see clearly, plan wise- ly and act cautiously. Our program is sighted towards rising levels of excellence and oriented to the complex needs of our times. Technical and professional competencies not alone sufficeg students must develop the ability to understand international as well as national problems and to master the intricate process of human relationship. There is greatness in Coahoma Jtinior College. in its traditions, in its current program, and in its future. As the needs for its services grow, so will its human and physical resources. lt will continue to play a major role in making this a better community, a better nation, and a better world. ,Z mf6 Academic Director - Par Excellence DEAN MARY G. WHITESIDE A wry I M Dr. I-I. H. Hartshorne of The Southern Association Accrediting Com- mission discusses his evaluation of The Coahoma Program with Dean Mary G. Whiteside. Deanas Statement Since the organization of Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School the institution has been striving in its pursuit of excellence to relate the program to the school's objectives. These objectives, among other things, seek to help youth and adults solve problems in the areas of human need. By guiding students as they experience and live from day to day in the classrooms and on the campus they can develop themselves more fully. The faculty of the college believes that the objectives of the school can only be fully attained when they excel in teaching and in scholarship. To that end they spend many hours working on self-improvement, evaluations of the program of studies, the improvement of instruction, and the growth and de- velopment of students. ln a College of Champions the faculty and students alike demand of themselves the highest achievement of which they are capable. Mary G. Whiteside Principal? Messa e If il 1 F4 . ll ll !,fK',1 xxx X ' ' s xx xx X Once again it is my privilege to commend you on this splendid publication. You have attempted to depict many of the unique achievements, individually and collec- tively, by various members of your school. This greatness which you laud could not have been possible unless a definite plan of action was vigorously pursued. Moreover, I am sure that each step of the way there were those who were there to say you were wrong. That there were many difficulties arising which tempted you to believe your critics. But because these efforts were founded upon the principles of purposeful activity, like true champions, you possessed the indomitable traits necessary to win these rewards. Again, may I offer my hearty congratulations and wish for you, and the Champions who are no longer on the immediate scene, continued success in your pursuit of excel- lence. W. L. Tobias, Sr. Student Personnel Director Honored for Excellence in Service Soror George Melba Jones pins orchid on Mrs. Zee Anderson Barron as she is named Woman of The Year by Gamma Gamma Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. The Board of Directors of The National Baptist Woman's Convention, U. S. A. , Inc. , in its January, 1962, session elected Mrs. Barron as National Director of Young Peoples Department - The largest organized group of young church women in America. Registrar Two Cl1E1l'I1PlOl'1S Bookkeeper MR. FRANK MCCUNE' SR' MRS. C. D. DAUGHERTY Bookkeeper and Secretary to the President Public Relations Director -may During the few brief years of her existence, Coahoma Junior College through constant emphasis upon the excellent has achieved a status which aptly entitles her to be hailed the College of Champions. ln her varied curriculum - enrichment activities - music, drama, forensics, art, ath- letics, Coahoma has flown her banner from the highest pinnacle. In mat- ters purely academic the' Coahoma student has time and time again ranked among the finest of the fine. With each new achievement of excellence has come a broadened prestige and an increased pride. Also there has come a deepened. but humble. sense of responsibility to better fulfill the mission to which she is dedicated - the development of young minds. the instilling of ideals and attitudes, the awakening of aspirations. The fulfillment of this mission will mean that upon a glorious past shall be built an even more glorious future. From the first graduating class of 34 members in 1952 to the present class of nearly 150, the spirit of excellence which leads to victory has prevailed. With each Coahoman who goes forth to win his place in the sun there goes with him the spirit and the story of his alma mater - the Col- lege of Champions. James E. Often in boxing, it is the fighter who gets the'best help from his cor- ner who eventually becomes a champion. Similarly the success of an ed- ucational institution largely depends upon the help of its well-wishers. One friend that has always remained in the Coahoma corner giving aid and assistance is the Parent-Teacher Association. The latest gifts to the institution by the P. T. A. are two beautiful studio pianos. Benefactions in previous years include playground equip- ment, free lunches for the underprivileged, and scholarships.
