COA HOMA IUNIOR COLLEGE AND AGRICULTURAL HIGH SCHOOL I HISTORICAL STATEMENT fr I i Coahoma County was among the first of the counties in Mississippi to provide an agricultural high -,G school for Negroes. In 1924, County Superintendent P. F. Williams proposed the organization of a school system which would include a number of elementary and junior high schools and one central agri- 1. cultural high school. Upon adoption of the proposal by the Board of Supervisors in that year, Coahoma -fl County Agricultural High School was established. F Il Mr. M. L. Strange served as the first superintendent of Coahoma County Agricultural High School during the 1924-25 term. In the years which followed, four other men headed the institution: Mr. J. H. Mosley, four yearsg Mr. J. W. Addison and Mr. J. B. Wright, eight years eachg and Mr. B. F. Mc- j Laurin, whose present term of office began with the 1946-47 school year, In order to provide even greater educational opportunites for the Negro youth and adults of Coahoma County, the high school curriculum was extended to a junior, or community, college in 1949 with Mr. L. L. Bryson, County Superintendent of Education, spearheading the movement. The name of the in- stitution was changed to Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School. Mr. B. F. McLaurin, who was serving as the first superintendent of Agricultural High School, be- came the first president of Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School. The college was or- ganized and directed the first three years by Mrs. Zee Anderson Barron and the first college graduation was held in 1952. During its first year of operation Coahoma Junior College was supported entirely by county funds. In the next year it became the first institution for Negroes to be included in Mississippi 's system of public junior colleges and eligible to share in funds appropriated by the Mississippi Legislature for the support of public junior colleges. Increased support has made possible the expansion of physical facilities and instructional staffs to adequately provide for a rapidly growing student body.
