To the Coahoman Staff and Student Body The dramatic rise into the heavens of the rockets and the sputniks has caused all eyes to take a new look at higher education and its future role in promoting scientific progress, So intense, in fact, is the present focus of attention upon these spectacular phenomena that the three cornerstones on which intellec- tual advancement is built appear in danger of being overlooked, Progress is spelled with Three Rs - the Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic, These are the basic tools students must employ to build their knowledge to the high degree of efficiency required in today's rapid- ly changing world, Now that our country has tossed a satellite into space and at least matched Russia's scientific accom- plishments, there may be some temptation among us to ease off on the demand for more attention to the Three Rs. But today's sputnik will be tomorrow's follyg we shall not relax, In order to sufficiently fulfill its proposed mission in education Coahoma Junior College must provide more adequate libraries, richer opportunities for a thorough knowledge of the languages, of history and of the social sciences to enable its students to read, interpret and understand what other peoples are doing, and why. Moreover, it will require proper science laboratories amply stocked with equipment so that experiments might be tested and proved, Coahoma Junior College aims to meet these needs, It was only a few weeks ago that, for the first time in all history, a man-made satellite was placed into orbit around the earth, Since that time nations have recognized the potential danger of guided mis- siles being rained upon us from military bases located in outer space. Like the development of these missiles, the expansion of Coahoma Junior College is evidence of an accomplishment in which both its personnel and the entire community may well take pride, The institution's development cannot be de- picted in the pages of this publication, but as sons and daughters ofCoahoma Junior College it is your specialresponsibility to defend and advance the principles and traditions on which we rest our ideals. As you accept this responsibility you give substance to the faith of its many graduates and advance the reali- zation of our dream, My deepest appreciation to all for their unselfish devotion in furthering a basic need - the education of youth of today to fit them for the challenges of the Space Age, Sincerely yours, B. F. McLaurin President of Coahoma Junior College
