We have spent many hours pre- paring these pages, and have looked for- ward with great expectancy to the time when the completed book might be yours. We have embodied in this La Conchilla pleas- ant memories of our continued success in athletic and social affairs. So friends, farewell. As you linger with us awhile, we hope that you may find some- thing to make you both gay and thoughtful, that you will both smile and be grave, and that somewhere in these pages you will find reflected a glimpse of the spirit that makes C.V.U.H.S. what it is. Escondido - - - - 53 Coach Dennis 125 The Varsity basketball team of Coach Marvin Dennis after two years of grooming finally hit pay dirt. Led by three junior stars: Tom Hoffman, Dick Dean, and Pete Gomez, they posted the best sea- son record of any Arab varsity with a 24 won — 5 lost record. The Arabs also won the RCL cage crown with a 12-2 record and advanced into the CIF semi- finals before losing to Escondido. In the RCL the Arabs led by Dick Dean in the first few games got off to a good start winning the entire first round with the climax a 34-31 win over the Banning Broncos. Then, seemingly suffering from the fat head the Arabs lost 2 straight. The Arabs then hit hard in the last 5 games, Dean averaging 16 points a game and hitting 19 in a 51-41 win over Banning in the title decider. In post season playoffs the Arabs first edged Holt- ville and then Buena Park winning both games by 2 points. Then against Escondido in the semi-finals the Arabs had their worst night of the year, hitting 20°o from the floor, losing 51-37. The Arab stars were definitely Tom Hoffman and Dick Dean in rebounding with averages o better than 10 points a game. Gomez led in points scored with a 174-14 games for a 12.2 average. Three of the Arabs, all juniors, made the all league team with Tom Hoffman and Pete Gomez making the first team with Dick Dean on the sec- ond squad and Oscar Ramirez honorable men- tion. 127 r „ . Despite the fact that they were tackling their first full season, the Arab Varsity turned in a undefeated and untied dual meet season against strong CBL op- position. Highlights of the season were the impressive wins over Riverside Poly and Palm Springs. The record shattering Varsity swimmers were led by Capt. Hugh Winn, Will Winn, Ken Roberts, and Eddie Maginnis. The B standouts were Mike Wood and Bob Conway while the C team was led by Dave Filer, Roy Rogers, and Ernest Argleben.
