But with the help of Miss Freeman and Mrs. Rati- cliffe, they were on their way to a good beginning. The three primary grades were soon left behind, and forty-eight eager children entered the grammar grades. The eighth grade seemed an important achievement. Most of the girls were in Mrs. Brooks's room, and the boys were with Mr. Price. This grade was hard at first, but Mrs. Brooks and Mr. Price worked hard preparing the youngsters for high school. During the last half of the eighth grade, Dorothy Williams transferred from Waynesville High School to join these girls and boys. Graduation from the eighth grade into high school was very exciting and was something we will never forget. High school was very strange to us at first, but we soon came to like changing classes, having different teachers, and using lockers. We were just getting straightened out in our freshmen year when Ruby Parton, another Waynesville girl, joined us. She was a very good basketball player and we were glad to have her. During our sophomore year, we regret to say we lost some of our girls and boys. We lost most of our girls to cupid: Shelba Sorrells, Doris Snyder, Betty Thompson, Marlyn Farley, and Betty Silvers. Joyce Ledford, Marie Bolden, Geraldine Hill, and Eugene Clarke left school. Billy Ingram joined the Navy, and Hoyt Mason was transferred to Bethel School at the end of the next year. Our junior year was an eventful one filled with much excitement from every direction. During this year Jan Sheffield, another good basketball player, joined us. This year was one the junior class will never forget, especially the trip to Washington, the Junior Play, Grandma's Best Years , and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Seniors! Already! And our class rings too! We were very happy in the beginning of this twelfth and final step. Fourteen girls and fourteen boys enrolled in Mrs. Brown's home room. This was what remained of our class to reap the rewards of a diploma. We were all together for the first and last time. Three new faces entered into the senior class, JudyGarland, Billy Jameson, and Walter Galloway. This year brought a variety of things. There was much studying to be done . . . never shall we forget the Canterbury pilgrims---someofthe horses and their riders which we made for the bulletin board certainly looked queer. Our class too, had the first girl school bus driver--how concerned we all were about Theresa when there was snow and ice. What fun we had with our play, The Daffy Dills, and never has so much food been devoured as when we had our class parties. All too soon, despite all the hard work through twelve years, graduation had come. Years from now as we look back, we shall always remember the time spent at Clyde High School as the most important in our lives.
