Matthews Miss Hannah Annual Jn yesterday's Mead lines September, 1943 was an important date for the seniors of ’55, as we began our first step up the ladder of education, A frightened group of 75 youngsters, we soon got a grasp on things under the supervision of Miss Freeman and Mrs. Noland. Boosting our first grade education were Mrs. Ellen Haynes and Mrs. Cannon. Mr. Henry was our principal. With patient guidance from all the grammar grade teachers, we reached the eighth grade , our final step before we reached the bliss of high school. Here Mr . Price and Mrs. Brooks gave us a good foundation for our last four years in school. This year, the Eighth Grade Girls’ Chorus , under the direction of Mrs. Christine Shuler, sang at many school and civic gatherings . We were also active in basketball, the girls placing second in the county 4-H tournament. At last, the ninth grade and the fo urth round from the top of the ladder. Mr. Evans and Mrs. Shook helped us along the first year, with the aid of Mr s . B rown, who became the girls’ sponsor after Christmas. Miss Greene took command of the boys and Miss Howell was presented the sophomore girls. The girls will never forget their momentous trip to Raleigh that spring. Our junior year will always be one of our most pleasant memories of high school. With Mrs. Soesbee and Mr. McLeod as our sponsors, we began the year off with a bang” by selling greeting cards and candy. December 3 was a big night; ‘‘A-feudin’ Over Yonder” wa s presented by the jolly juniors. In February, we se- lected our class rings. We enjoyed an all-day trip to points of interest in Asheville and Biltmore House in April. All too soon, it was May 14 and the J unior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The theme was Moonlight and Roses.” I would like to pause just a moment to remember those of our class who did not enter the senior class with us. Along the way Jackie Sue Browning, Betty Car- ver, Ethel Woods, and Mary Sutton fell heir to cupid. Among those transferring to other schools were R. D. Ballard, Wenonah Bright, Tommy Edge, Janet Fincher, Jean Jones,Hilda Summey, and Peggy Willis. A number of our boys, who joined the armed forces were David Medford, Dutch” Rathbone, and George Summey. We had three gains in our class throughout high school. Dan McCracken joined us in the ninth grade and Bonnie Morgan and Phyllis Haynes joined the senior class. And now for our senior and busiest year, thirty-four made the final round of the ladder, with Mrs. Brown, our sponsor. We sold $450 worth of magazines to help de- fray our expenses to Washington. November 5, we toured the Champion Paper and Fibre Co. and were given our first graduation gifts . At long last, our class rings arrived, November 15. We will never forget the presentation of our class play, Aunt Abby Answers An Ad,” the publication of The Cardinal,” and our trip to Washington, D. C. in the spring of ’55. We will always treasure the memory of the wonderful banquet given us by the Juniors in May. Finally, May 22, our baccalaureate sermon and then with mingled feelings of sadness and happiness , we were presented our long-desired diplomas by Mr .Liv- ingston , May 23 . We can truly say, Our school days were our happiest days! ” Violet Lindsey, Historian Tomorrow's Mead lines Breathlessly the class of ’55 gaze deeply into a crystal ball. The future, ten years from now, is about to be revealed. Ah! It is dimly coming into view. We see an elaborate banquet being prepared. Dan McCracken, chairman of the county school board, and superintendent of the che- mical laboratory at Champion, has planned this reunion. His wife, Judy, is helping Joan greet the guests. Joan has just returned from Hawaii where she and Admiral Free plan to make their home. We see more figures vaguely come into sight. It is Iva Ann Deaver, Home Ec . teacher, and Fred and William, owners of Western Carolina’s largest truck farm-- they donated the food for the banquet, and Ernest furnished the dairy products from his Biltmore Farms. What is that strange noise? Why.it looks like Bill Caldwell in a new superson- ic jet. It is Bill, and he tells us that John Medford, now a famous engineer, designed the plane . A gleaming white v i s i o r appears. Who could it be but our class medics? Jo Anna’s fate wa s to become a doctor at John Hopkins, and Eula Jo is superintendent of nurses there. J udy is an eminent psychiatrist, and Mary Sue is a private nurse in Chicago. As the scene changes, we hear the purr of an airplane gliding into the Clyde Airport. Pilot, Jim Summey, and hostess, Sue Carolyn, talk to their former class- mates as they leave the plane. Barbara Walker, professional photographer, is busy taking pictures for the Clyde Gazette. A chartered bus driven by Ted arrives with a load of guests. We overhear con- versations and find that Richard Snyder and Shirley Stameynow have their own tele- vision shows in New York. Phyllis McClure has become a commercial artist for Life Magazine. Harold Medford, a West Point graduate, likes the Army so well that he is making it his career. As the conversation continues,we learn that Doris owns a fashionable dress shop in Washington, and that Jean Jackson is a secretary in the Pentagon. A row of white cottages appear. They are the homes of Sue, Bonnie and Willa Dean. Sue and Bonnie enjoy their work at the Haywood County Hospital, while Willa Dean and husband, Tracy, work at Champion. What is this that we see before the cottages? If our eyes do not deceive us, a Cadillac driven by Phyllis Haynes has stopped there. Through a mist we see a bus stopping. Owner of the bus line and driver, H. L., is the first one to alight. Next comes Charles Jolley, who plays with the Yankees, followed by Carroll Fisher, a Washington Redskins player. With them is head coach at Duke, Jimmy Rogers. White clouds blurr the picture--ah! it’s clear again and we can see all the classmates seated around the table. Dr. Brown, once our sponsor, but now teaching English at the University of North Carolina, is talking with Violet Lindsey, who has replaced her as head of the English department at Clyde High School. Another tea- cher at Clyde, Shirley Rathbone, is the director of music. Let us listen as Jo Anna, class president, introduces the speaker. Why, it is President Carter! But how? ? Oh, she is explaining that Senator Dotson introduced a bill, which was passed, enabling him to become President at twenty-five. But wait--only the clear crystal ball is left. A mere glimpse into the future has revealed many things, but only time can tell what really lies ahead!
