We were lost, confused, and befuddled; but with the help of Miss Freeman and Miss Rickman, we found our places in this institution of learning. The three primary grades we re soon passed and we eagerly entered the grammar grade department. We shall never forget the Hansel and Gretel play that we gave in the third grade and the operetta, Sunny of Sunnyside, which was given when we were in the fourth grade. With the constant help of various teachers, we were soon abletoenter the eighth- grade. Here the class was divided. Mr. Smith had charge of the boys and Mrs. Brooks the girls. They worked faithfully to give us a firm foundation on which we could build our four years in high school. This year Mrs. Shuler, the music teacher, used the girls as a chorus; and we sang on several occasions. Jf- ' In the fall of '50, we found ourselves in high school. The girls were sent to Miss Way, and the boys were sent to Miss Greene. This year we were deeply grieved at the death of Ruby Beasley, whose friendliness and sweet disposition meant so much to us. i m Our freshman and sophomore years slid by quickly. We enjoyed class picnics at Smoke Mont and Pink Beds. . 4 Sftllc' Our junior year was an eventful one filled with much excitement. Our sponsors, Mrs. Soesbee and Mr. Constance, led us in our varied activities. The outstanding ones were our side-splitting play, Aunt Tillie Goes To Town, and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, which proved to be successful events. At last the long anticipated day . . . We’re seniors ! The boys and girls (only thirty-one remaining) were together for the first time in high school. jjf -;Jr. I! ‘ ■ • Jr We were sorry to lose our sponsor, Mrs. Clayton, who leftus in October to teach at Sylva. The class gave a party in her honor, and presented her with three pieces of silver in her chosen, pattern. Mrs. Brown, who assumed the responsibility as spon- sor, very ably led us through the remaining seven months. ' if 3 Some of the most interesting events of our senior year were: a visit to the Champion; the arrival of the class rings, which created quite a sensation among the seniors; and the senior play, The Eager Miss Beaver. All our happy activities were halted when death again paid us a visit; this time Troy Jenkins was the one to leave us. •: g MWli In the spring we traveled up North and succeeded in unnerving the citv of Washing- ton. We returned to be entertained at a colorful Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, given to us by the Juniors, which climaxed our visit at 'Dear Ole' Clyde High. All too quickly came the Baccalaurette and Graduation with all its happiness and sad- ness of leaving Clyde School to take our places in the world of tomorrow. Looking back, we shall always remember the years spent at Clyde School as the best years of our lives. Joretta Medford Historian LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and fifty-four, of Clyde High School, in the County of Haywood, State of North Carolina, United States of America, being of sound mind and of strong bodies (we hope), having attained ample knowledge to graduate and take up the toil and hardships of life, do make known our bequeaths. Article 1 To the faculty and to the principal, Mr. Stanly Livingston, we leave our deepest appreciation for their help and guidance and our many thanks for their leadership and kindness toward us. Article 11 Tothe school board, who have made so many things possible, we leave our best wishes for continued success. Article 111 To those who will fill our places, the individuals in the Senior Class leave the following: JanetFrancis leavesherbig mouth to Barbara Walker and hopes that it doesn’t get her into too much trouble. Joretta Medford’s tricky ways to get by with things goto Jo Anna McCracken. Sammy Kaye Haynes wills her ability to talk her way out of trouble to Nelda Cashion and hopes Nelda talks more than she did. To Charles Jolley, Jon Morgan gives his title as Class Monkey. Neal Caldwell would like for Dan McCracken to replace him as Class Flirt. Richard Russell leaves his Physics problems to anyone who can work them. To Billy Jack, Charles Sellars wills his U. S. History Book. Robert Messer relinquishes his spot at center of the football team to Johnny Rogers, and Frank Thompson would like to see Carroll Fisher re- place him as tail back. To “Mouse,” Milnor bequeaths his p h y s i que. Kenneth McClure’s typewriter goes to anyone who would like to use it. Jim Long would like to see Rayford Jenkins in his football shoes. Louise Collins’ towering height should be a welcome gift to Eula Jo to be used on the basketball court. Norma Snyder wills her bashfulness to Opal Ledford, Grace Jones’ chewing gum is reserved for Iva Ann in typing class. Jack Rogers wills his “O” on the Macbeth” test to any one who can make it. Rachel Thompson’s ability to sing is for Shirley Sanford. Geraline leaves her English books for James Summey. Dot Haney would like to see Judy have her part in the Senior play. Shirley Rhodarmer wants Violet Lindsey to have all her luck so she will become engaged before she finishes school. Helen Carver bequeaths her conductgrades to Joan Banks. Howell McCracken’s title as Most Original Senior for Ronald’s use and his good looks are for John Carter. To H. L. Ducker, David leaves his ability to get along with everyone. Jerry Walker wills his power of de- structive, bad personality to William Orville Caldwell, Jr. The back seat in English Class is left by E. W. for anyone who wants to sit there . William Mann hopes there will be some one next year who can take his place in the characterization of Macbeth. Lou Ann Osborne wishes there will be someone next year lucky enough togohome at 12:30 o’clock every day as she did this year. Sue Stamey leaves her place as editor of the school paper to Sue Lindsey. Ralph Glance warns Johnny Jenkins not to acquire his name as a reckless driver. Carroll Crane buys a pack of cigarettes for all the bums. Barbara Scott just hopes that her mother doesn’t have as hard a time getting Dimples to school on time as she did her. Having transferred the above rights and privileges we hereby appoint Mrs. Soesbee and Mr. McLeod to be executors. In witness whereof, we the Senior Class of 1954, do set seal on this, the twenty- seventh day of May in the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Four. Jerry W alker Testator CLASS PROPHECY Here it is the year of 1964, and I am boarding the plane at Paris to return to Clyde for the reunion of the class of 1954. Well, who is coming on the plane now? It is Janet Francis and her champion basketball players. She brought them to Paris to compete in the 1964 Olympics. Janet teaches physical education at the gymnasium which was built when we were Seniors. We will arrive at home just in time for the reunion. It will seem good to have a vacation from my teaching English in the Universite de Paris. While in America I shall stay at Robert Messer’s Mountain View Ranch in Clyde. I am riding on one of the Trans-World planes, owned and operated by Ralph Glance. There comes Sammy Kay Haynes with some magazines. I did not think that I would be fortunate enough to have her as the airline hostess for my trip, but with her looks and personality, it is no wonder she had the qualifications of a hostess. ■ That new Hotel Clyde certainly is an added attraction to the town. Helen tells me that Jon Morgan has just finished paying the David Livingston Construction Company for building it. I thought it was pretty on the outside, but with Joretta Medford’s doing the interior decorating, it could not be anything but elegant. It is time now for the reunion to begin. Oh, there comes Grace Jones ! She owns an Opera House in New York City. She has just invited me to come by before I re- turntoParis. Rachel Thompson will be singing, accompanied at the piano by Geraline Summey. Norma is keeping with the finances. Some of our classmates who are in service had a difficult ti ' a leave for our reunion. Kenneth McClure is an Admiral in the Navy, and Howell McCracken is a four-star General in the Marines, products of Clyde. Uncle Sam must have ith the Mrs. David Jaynes, the former Miss Sue Stamey, is working as a receptionist in San Francisco, California, while awaiting the arrival of David from Japan. Lou Anne Osborne teaches Home Economics there, Shirley Rhodarmer is married to Wayne Stevenson and has twodarling children. Here is another married man, E.W.Free with his two little boys. Jack Rogers and Dorothy Haney could not be with us today for it just happened that their Carribean cruise was planned for this month. I believe that nearly everyone is here now, but wait a minute. There is some- one missing. I know; it’s Milnor Ward. Unfortunately one of our class turned out to be the most wanted man by the F. B. I, Maybe he would have come anyway if Neal Caldwell, the F. B. I. agent from Washington D. C.,had not been here. Jim Long has always been a favorite of the class. He is an it anical engineering at the Lockheed Plane Corporation in Califoi in mech- is still try- ing to invent a mechanical brain in his spare time. Speaking of en gineers , Jerry Walker is teaching chemical engineeringat Georgia Tech. If Sammy were not so content with soaring through space,he might be a mar- ried man now. Iife': Gearldine tells me that Frank Thompson, her husband, won the National stock- car races last week. He now owns the Thompson Used Car Lot which has become one of the largest in Western North Carolina. Charles Sellars and Carroll Crane prefer staying near home. Carroll is sec- retary to Reuben B. Robinson, Jr. and Charles is head of the Public relations dep - artment. Richard Russell is not very far away. He owns the club. Well, it is almost time to go home, but look who is arriving ! Loui se Collins with her little ones--all three of them. She is a “little” late but then we areused to that after the days at Clyde Hi. In this class of 1954 everyone should have beenchosen“Most Likely to Succeed, ’ ’ not excepting Milnor, for he is known the world over. This reunion has been such a pleasure and success, that we hope to repeat it in 1974.
