V4 Ham ' E O I Fifty long but profitable years down the winding, rocky paths of progress, building, and learning have made the Clovis school system what it is today. Some of us take that all- important step out into the world and others still prepare for that moment. We all antic- ipate with a little joy, a little wonder, the time when we shall suhsist on Cod-given instinct, what we have learned on our own, and what others have taught us, that largest portion of accumulated knowledge. Countless people have given innumerable hours of priceless time in order that we might have strong, solid foundations upon which to huild our lives. Without these, we would not have the confidence of young men and women. Instead, we would greet the world as shaking children. We shall be ever indebted to the 'gbuilders, the '4darers, the 4'conquerors, who have passed their traits down to us to be shared with all mankind and it is to these faithful and courageous leaders to whom the 1959 PLAINSMAN staff dedicates this annual. The forty-acre campus is a far cry from the three story red brick, which was located at Seventh and Main and covered only a block. The old high school was first occupied in 1918. The main part of the high school plant is now completed. The buildings finished are the Ad- ministrative and Home Economics Building, the Library and Study Hall Building, seven classrooms and the Vocational 'Agriculture Building, and the Utilities Building. The dedication of the Rock Staubus Gymnasium was held August 31, 1958. 'aThe Vocal and Band Buildings were first used the second semester of this school year. Units not yet constructed include the Industrial Arts Building, Machine and Sheet Metal Shops Building, Cafeteria, and Student Center. An approximate increase of one hundred stu- dents has been made each year since the newlcam- pus came into use. Enrollment the first year reached about seven hundred and this year nine hundred. As the citizens reflect back over the past fifty years and review the progress of eastern New Mexico, the Senior High School has been a definite part of this progress and growth. As the students and citizens look at the former site of the Senior High School, the Sears building at 7th and Main, and then take a glance at the Senior High School at North Thornton, this is an indica- tion that progress is still marching forward for the next fifty years. With a population of some 33,- 000 citizens, a school population of approximately 6,000 students, and a future that is unlimited, then the next fifty years will be one of true growth which is based upon the past fifty years. Thus the Clovis Schools join with the staff of the Plainsman in commemorating and giving sincere thanks to the pioneers of Curry County for the past and saying to the pioneers of the future, May you ever progress in your destiny with the best educational standards that can be offered by the Sen- ior High Schoolf, Sincerely yours, TRAVIS STOVALL Fzzdaclpal 71-nga WQJS W-I 1, gi, ,, i. . I 5 J 4,,,,.,-,?.Q. ' lf si... To the students of Clovis High School: Over the past five decades Clovis pioneers have been able to view with pride and interest the City's transition from the wagon track and dirt street era to jet age vapor trails. ln this upsurge of industry and population which Clovis has experienced during the past 50 years the public school system has not been left behind. In steady metamorphis the original single-building school has evolved into our present educational program with its functional design, diversified curriculum and modern physical plant. Through the years, progressive-minded taxpayers, school boards and educators have worked without cessation to develop a plan which would most fully meet the educational needs of the youthful citizens of Clovis. For many years, the high school at 7th and Main fulfilled this purpose admirably and more than a generation of Clovis students graduated there. However, passing years and mushrooming student population made continued use of those facilities unfeasible and the five-year plan in educational building for Clovis was put into orbit. The result of this plan is our present institution which commands respect and admiration throughout the state and turns out a very significant number of superior graduates each spring. The past half century of graduates from each of the Clovis High buildings have a feeling of loyal pride in their school. We' ask while you are attending school here and after you graduate that you, too, endeavor always to uphold our high standards of academic, athletic and personal values con- structed by those who have participated in the past 50 years of education in Clovis. Since over 40? of the American people are engaged in distributive occupations, the Federal Government has deemed it necessary and wise to assist the states in the training of students interested in entering this field. The Clovis High School entered this program in 1938 and has participated uninterruptedly since that time. During this time approximately 1000 students have taken part. Many of these people have entered business on their own. .aw Doug . tail ' e rliamefx Broom 1 is B1'0Ckv pa I. Rwhard Adept. I WU, Farr. L ART SMITH was drum major for the Wildcat marching hand. 1959 70 gan! The 1959 Wildcat Marching Band won much recognition for Clovis High School. Among their many activities of the year they marched in the ENMU Homecoming and won first place. They also marched at halftime in such places .as Roswell, Las Cruces, Portales, and Muleshoe. The high step and fast tempo of the band set a standard in Eastem New Mexico which made other cities take a second look at Clovis. In the annual Music Festival for the past two years the band was rated superior one time and excellent the other. The Festival will be held in Clovis this year. During foothall season the band performed at all home games as well as at out-of-town games. Each show represents many hours of hard work and training, and each tells a story of things related to a general theme. Several outstanding themes were Christmas,,' Television Land, Space Travel, and salute to important school people. These shows' brought favorable comments even from principals of other schools. The other characters learned from a visit by Dr. Brand and his daughter from Boston of Bob's intentions to practice with Brand. As old Doc is getting along in years, Margaret Burns, Bob's fiancee, and Ma Brown try to keep the news from him. Accidently encountering his father, Bob is reluctant to tell of his decision. Instead he later writes a note, hoping to be gone before Doc returns from an emergency call. A defeated Doc returns home after losing his patient. Finding Bob's note, he collapses with a heart attack. Ma and Margaret try to reach Bob, he arrives just as old Doc is dying. Through the help of others, Bob realizes his responsibility and stays in his father's office. Neighbors and patients add warm humor to the story.
