I ri GQ? 5 SUPERINTENDENT MEMCRIES Memories is a beautiful and sentimental word. Memories, in the best definition of the term, means appreciation for the past and a guide to the future. Memories pro- vide a driving force for doing good and for making further progress. Soon, three hundred members of our student body will become alumni of Clovis Union High School. Soon their presence here will be but a memory, and their places will be filled by new students on their way up the ladder in their quest for learning. But memory, that blessed attribute of human nature, will keep fresh in our minds the work and life of this brilliant group. We will thrill again when our teams take the football field with the memory of our first championship in many years and the part the Class of 1957 played in it. We will remember with pleasure many of the activities sponsored by this fine group of young people. We will recall with pleasure, and perhaps some pride, our associations with the members of this class, and we will live richer and better lives because of these memories. These sentiments will also dominate the thinking of many seniors as they pass through the halls for their last time as members of the school. As they assume their various stations along life's highway, they will likewise discover the value of memo- ries. They will recall with increasing pleasure their many associations and activities while members of the Clovis Union High School Student Body. They will discover how important these four years have been, they will profit by their experiences and go on to greater things. Be the road rough or smooth, uphill or downhill, remember we are all pulling for your success. We will believe that your success here and your ever-present memories of your school will be incentive enough to drive you over each obstacle and further on to happy, worthwhile living. Sincerely yours, William T. Atkin. Superintendent BOARD OF TRUSTEES fl Full Time Job new L . ,r .fs ' The , f 1 f lg I I '1 l 1: . . ' ' 1' 'i' 4 t v , ' . lf T ' ' A 1, I . .if Mr. Delbert Smith Vice President I Many lyeaarsfjof experience and hundreds of hours of frpcfservice have been combined in the work of Jthe fine members of our Board of Trus- tees. They have the welfare of the District at heart, and in a very large measure are responsible for the development of our school, of which we are so proud. The school has more than doubled in size in the past few years, and the board has matched this growth with building, equipment, and person- nel. They have the grateful appreciation of the class of 1957. Mr. George Hollesen, Clerk Mr. Charles Preuss Mrs. C. W. Bonner PRINCIPAL lt was a happy choice when the staff selected Moments to Remember as the theme of the 1957 Cavalcade. This volume reflects moments to remember in a de- lightful manner. But the memories shown here reflect even deeper interests and loyalties, those vital forces that are a part of the very spirit of the school itself. Herein is the charm of a happy year at Clovis Union High School. ln future years, as we look again upon the familiar names and scenes, memories will return and inspire reflections that will cast a glow of renewed affection for our school and our associates. Congratulations to the staff, the class of l957, and your advisers for an excellent job of preserving here many pleasant moments of the 1956-57 school year. George Kastner Principal I've Got My Eyes on You VICE-PRINCIPAL My thoughts, as l considered the Theme for the Cavalcade of l957, brought im- mediately to mind the profusion of enioyable melodies which drift so pleasantly from the music wing. That pleasurable imagery, a sound-picture, if you please, de- picted the outstanding contributions to the school and community made by our instrumental and vocal music classes. But this first impression gave way to the nohy chonn of nudenn pasdng htthe haHway-a hannomous bhnd oflaughten of lockers opening and closing, of friendly greetings-the music of a happy and enthudasncstudentbody. Other musical sounds, perhaps more pleasing to the memory than to the ear, in- clude the lusty shouts of excited rooters lthey had much to shout about this yearl, the sudden explosive beat of typewriters engaging in speed tests, the symphonic din and clatter emanating from the activities of the home economics classes, and the screaming song of the power saw in shop. The roar of the buses leaving with students to seek new laurels in San Francisco, or Los Angeles, or simply to return to their homes, combine with a multitude of other familiar sounds to produce evi- dence of a busy campus. These serious, purposeful activities denote a harmonious and rewarding school relationship which will be long remembered by students of all classes, and partic- ularly the graduating seniors who have written the last notes of a familiar score. May I extend my sincere congratulations to this outstanding group of young men and women who are leaving behind an enviable record of achievement, the symbol for a bright and successful future. Lee Clark, Vice-Principal The Finger of Suspicion Points at You DEAN OF GIRLS Literature teems with references to the power of music. That cantankerous Scotch- man, Thomas Carlyle, exploded with this theme: Give us, O give us, the man who sings at his work! He will do more in the same time-he will do it better, he will per- severe longer. One is scarcely sensible of fatigue whilst he marches to music. We may march to a military rhythm, hear the latest dance tune through our feet, delight ourselves and torture our elders with platters. But music is more than that. The speech of the angels, Carlyle called it. Shake- speare tells us, The man that hath no musicin himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, ls fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils. Let no such man be trusted. Music has been called the universal language. Through it we speak to people the world over, whose ioys and sorrows, hopes and ideals are the same as ours. Respi- ghi's Pines of Rome or Sibelius' Finlandia tell us more of the agonies ofa con- quered people than any textbook could give us. The study of music in school should open our minds and souls, through it we should learn to hear the music of nature, her symphonies of rain and wind, of rippling wa- ter, whirring wings, and rustling leaves. Through it we should hear the voices and the aspirations of the great mass of people in the world-what Wordsworth called the still, sad music of humanity. Perhaps if we were to follow the advice of the great German poet Goethe that we hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of our lives, we might even come toward understanding the purpose and meaning of life itself. Mrs. Marion Gaines Dean of Girls WVn11nn 9+ Y-'l'n9'rv'l' 7' DEAN OF BOYS The general theme of music as a stimulant to memories is very appropriate now that we are at the end of another school year, especially for you seniors, who at graduation time are looking back over your four years spent at Clovis High School with many fond Moments to Remember of the days which will undoubtedly be considered the happiest of your life. You have made many friends among the stu- dent body, the faculty, and the administrative staff, and these associations are as- suredly as important to you as the valuable knowledge and skills acquired. You lower classmen as well will look back upon the school year 1956-1957 with much satisfa ian, and while your desire will be strong to go on to the completion of your high. y oofl career, you will nevertheless contemplate your high-school days already past withflonging for times that cannot be relived except in memory. May your future rinjg' you all you hope to accomplish. ttf! 1 l Q Robert E. Tucker g ,J Dean of Boys , f ltl. We gathered then, according to tradition, in the balcony, better known as the Peanut Gallery. Do you know how we started off our four years here at Clovis High? Yes, you guessed it, with a flat, floppy yell, if you want to call it a yell. But we survived the remaining part of the year after electing Larry Little President, Kent Bishop Vice-President, and Pat Bishop Secretary- Treasurer. We had a Freshman Get-Acquainted Dance, which many of us attended. However, since we were shy and inexperienced, we stumbled around all night, afraid to move, and very few of us danced. When the end of the year came, one could hardly tell the Freshmen from the members of other classes until the mass confusion of Cavalcade distribution. We were all being pushed around, knocked to the ground, or being stepped on by the mighty Seniors. They seemed so very big then. Were we ever glad that year was over! ln 1954-55, we, as Sophomores, had the biggest and best class at Clovis: alert, willing to support class activities, and outnumbering the Seniors in CSF. We elected Kent Bishop President, Joe Men- doza Vice-President, and Sally McDonald, Secre- tary-Treasurer. This was the year we experienced the production of a class assembly. What work! But it was worth it because we had the best assembly Clovis had ever had with Hard Hearted Hannah, Mambo Italiano, and the Goops. These were only a few of the magnificent acts in our scrap- book of Moments to Remember. At that point, we began to think about a problem faced by all sopho- more classes-money. We had cup cake sales and held a Sophomore Sock Hop. Our beautiful new gym brought us luck that year, for all our basketball teams won championships in the Northern Sequoia League for the first time in the history of the school. We then iourneyed to Wasco in extreme enthusiasm, for the championship game. However, our excite- ment over the basketball game was dampened shortly after that by our deep sorrow over the death of one of our most beloved teachers, Mr. Ernest Thun. Now we were growing older and wiser because we were Juniors. Kent Bishop was elected as our President, Georgette Andreis as Vice-President, and Cecile Lucich as Secretary-Treasurer. That is the year we received material evidence to show that we were upper-classmen, our beautiful class rings, and our blue class sweaters. That year we acquired our own column in the Growl, it was called '57 Heav- en. Everyone worked hard to make our class play, M'Liss, a success. We sponsored the best dance ever known on the face of this old earth, the fa- mous Junior Jump. Our assembly given that year was called Dress RehearsaI. But still all is not complete until we mention our never-to-be-forgotten prom, Rhapsody in Blue. We decorated until 7:00 p.m., and when we left it, it was almost time to come back for the dance, which was a big success in the eyes of all who attended. That over and done, and having taken an entire summer to get used to the idea of being Seniors, we returned to school September 17, 1956. Now we're the big wheels. There was one maior change here when we returned, something altogether differ- ent from before-school started at 8:30 a.m. instead of 9:00 lthe hour that we sleepy seniors greatly pre- ferredl. As Seniors we presented the play Years Ago, and the Senior Assembly reopened our scrap- book to add some new memories to it before it was closed for good. Dorothy Facio introduced her orig- inal Calypso singing to the student body, everyone got a kick out of our new Senior Rock 'n Roll combo, most of our student body went Siamese when Little Bop Red was presented, and each of the acts con- tributed to the roaring success of the assembly. Our candidate was crowned Queen of the annual Blue and Gold Ball. We went to Fresno to observe court- room procedure, and iourneyed to Reedley for Ca- reer Day. These trips were very enlightening to all who went. Our class rings may be outdated, and our sweat- ers may be wearing out, but when we muse over our memories and see the pictures of our friends and fellow classmates, we look back on four years of wonderful Moments to Remember. FOOTBALL SUMMARY Our i956-57 Junior Varsity foot- ball team was the first in the history of Clovis High School. The team was formed to give more boys experience in football before going up to Varsity. This squad is made up of players that are too big to play for the B's but haven't enough experience to play for the Varsity. Our deepest thanks go to Coach Kring and Coach Utter for their val- uable help in preparing the boys for future success in football. f r .-.- 5. f 3 COACH UTTER P in First Offense, Linemen: R.E. Our star cager, big John Kruzic, led the Cougars to a very suc- cessful season, although a little hard luck prevented our team from taking the championship. Our cagers won their share of games and lost those remaining by fewer than four points each. Dennis Houx, playing exceptionally well throughout the season, established himself as the second highest scorer on the squad. Daryle Lamonica, only a sophomore, did outstanding rebounding and all- around playing during the season. Other outstanding players such as Tom Kruzic, Larry Little, and John Baxley, gave our Cougars fine support. The reserves, Mel Heckman, Bill Bristow, Dan Baker, Pat Hogan and Mike Christopher, made it possible for our powerful and hard fighting cagers to succeed.
