ean of guiclance School Spirit is a somewhat intangible quality, but the end result is much in evidence. This end result is, of course, sports- manlike conduct. You students at Clovis Union High School have developed a fine record for sportsmanship. You have coopera- tively developed a most acceptable code of fair play, This code has emphasized the fact that you as spectators represent the school as surely as if you were players on the field. Addition- ally, you have learned early in life that the good name of your school is much more important than any game Won by unfair play. Important as school spirit and the resultant sportsmanlike con- duct are, the final test will be the carryover value of these factors in your later lives. School spirit and good conduct have their counterparts in loyalty to one's country. This loyalty, tempered with proper ethics, has been a contributing factor in making our nation the greatest in the world. This nation will continue to be great only if you citizens of tomorrow are loyal to it and uphold the principles upon which it is founded, Good luck to each of you. It has been a pleasure to be asso- ciated with you, MR. GEORGE KASTNER

Gall 0 QI' 6 ln his fast-moving novel of football, The Long Ride Home, Bon- ner lvfcMillon has the coach saying, after a heart-breaking loss at the end of a successful season, 'Football teams are all alike, I argued. The good ones win and the bad ones lose. Football players are just so much Weight and muscle, I thought. Well, I've changed my mind. You were different. You worked together and stood up for one another, and put the team above yourselves. Psychologists are fond of the term transfer of training -how much does training in one field help in other fields? lf sports training can mean that we learn to work together, to stand up for one another, and to put the team above ourselves, then We have learned three valuable attitudeswcooperation, loyalty, and unselfishness-which will make our lives richer and our useful- ness greater. It may be true, as the wit says, that the only thing improved by breaking is a record. lt is wonderful, yes, to break a record, to win, but in competition there is only one first place. Life is not so exacting. There are many first places. The important rec- ord to break is one's own-to do better today than yesterday, through one's own efforts and through cooperation, loyalty, and unselfishness, to seek a better world. MRS. MARION P. GAINES
