uae- rincilaa tt I 'gli ' f 1. ,alt K f 'J j-FV School Spirit stems from a love and pride of students toward their school. lt is expressed in many ways, both large and small. One ol the biggest ways is for students to use good conduct and citizen- ship. This gives the public a good impression of the school, for the school is judged by the students who attend it. Supporting various teams and various extra-curricular activi- ties is one Way lor students to Work together as a whole and make their school better. Showing interest in these activities that are designed lor them shows the organizers and sponsors that even though not all students are interested in an event, they still can show their spirit through co-operation and support. Without school spirit, a school is little more than a prison. The lack of a sense of belonging and the love and pride which make school spirit makes the student resent having to attend school. A student body must also have faith in its school and believe it is the best school because the students made it that. There must also be a feeling of friendliness toward, and re- spect for, other schools. A good example of lack of spirit is shown in disrespect for those who should be considered friends. It is entirely up to the students to have a school to be proud ol, for it can be no more nor less than they make it. MR. LELAND W. CLARK

Gall 0 QI' 6 ln his fast-moving novel of football, The Long Ride Home, Bon- ner lvfcMillon has the coach saying, after a heart-breaking loss at the end of a successful season, 'Football teams are all alike, I argued. The good ones win and the bad ones lose. Football players are just so much Weight and muscle, I thought. Well, I've changed my mind. You were different. You worked together and stood up for one another, and put the team above yourselves. Psychologists are fond of the term transfer of training -how much does training in one field help in other fields? lf sports training can mean that we learn to work together, to stand up for one another, and to put the team above ourselves, then We have learned three valuable attitudeswcooperation, loyalty, and unselfishness-which will make our lives richer and our useful- ness greater. It may be true, as the wit says, that the only thing improved by breaking is a record. lt is wonderful, yes, to break a record, to win, but in competition there is only one first place. Life is not so exacting. There are many first places. The important rec- ord to break is one's own-to do better today than yesterday, through one's own efforts and through cooperation, loyalty, and unselfishness, to seek a better world. MRS. MARION P. GAINES
