In our quest for heroes, we are inclined to overlook those Whose Work is not dramatic or glamorousflike the one to Whom this yearbook is dedicated. He is a simple, unassuming person who by his'de-dication to his daily Work provides inspiration to all of us. He graduated from Clovis in 1912, and re- turned to perform a lifetime of service to those who followed. He has watched the school grow, and takes pride in its growth. He contributes much to make it one of the outstanding schools in California. His Work is the kind that couldn't be measured by grades, but only by the affection and respect that all the students have for him, To our faithful custodian, Mr. Walter Reyburn, we, the Class of l956, dedicate this Cavalcadel ......... auagxwle SM!! You can hide from the World some things perhaps- but what goes on in your mind and heart will guide your footsteps and determine your success or failure in life. The successful person has already realized the values of high morale, and a vibrant, co-operative, driving spirit. We are happy to note the high spirit and morale in our student body. We hope you will develop it further. To the seniors who have been so much a part of our student body, and who have done so much to bring about good school morale, we extend our sincere thanks. Enter life beyond high school with that same enthusiasm and that same drive you have shown here, and success will come your Way. It : 5 ' has been a pleasure to have known you and to have asso- ciated with you during the past four years. May the best that life has to offer be yours. MR. WILLIAM T, ATKIN Maid of jfudfeea The Board of Trustees is the group actually responsible for the operation of Clovis Union High School. Their many and varied duties include setting the standards for graduation, outlining the financial program for the school, preparing the budget, and directing disburse- ments. The Senior Class wishes to express their gratitude to the Board of Trustees for all the wonderful things they have done for the school and a special thanks for providing for the corn- mencement caps and gowns. .lh . ,4:r,'tfTt f7'i ffl 'li 9- 'Mix , f ll 3' ll! i ll he A lllxl ', .d n v It I Vit .JDM Al tl ? it fi. 1 -ug i as-'Tris Left to right: Einar Cook, Vice Presidentg Delbert Smithg Charles Preuss, Presidentg George Hollesen Clerk lt. C. W, Bonner. uae- rincilaa tt I 'gli ' f 1. ,alt K f 'J j-FV School Spirit stems from a love and pride of students toward their school. lt is expressed in many ways, both large and small. One ol the biggest ways is for students to use good conduct and citizen- ship. This gives the public a good impression of the school, for the school is judged by the students who attend it. Supporting various teams and various extra-curricular activi- ties is one Way lor students to Work together as a whole and make their school better. Showing interest in these activities that are designed lor them shows the organizers and sponsors that even though not all students are interested in an event, they still can show their spirit through co-operation and support. Without school spirit, a school is little more than a prison. The lack of a sense of belonging and the love and pride which make school spirit makes the student resent having to attend school. A student body must also have faith in its school and believe it is the best school because the students made it that. There must also be a feeling of friendliness toward, and re- spect for, other schools. A good example of lack of spirit is shown in disrespect for those who should be considered friends. It is entirely up to the students to have a school to be proud ol, for it can be no more nor less than they make it. MR. LELAND W. CLARK Gall 0 QI' 6 ln his fast-moving novel of football, The Long Ride Home, Bon- ner lvfcMillon has the coach saying, after a heart-breaking loss at the end of a successful season, 'Football teams are all alike, I argued. The good ones win and the bad ones lose. Football players are just so much Weight and muscle, I thought. Well, I've changed my mind. You were different. You worked together and stood up for one another, and put the team above yourselves. Psychologists are fond of the term transfer of training -how much does training in one field help in other fields? lf sports training can mean that we learn to work together, to stand up for one another, and to put the team above ourselves, then We have learned three valuable attitudeswcooperation, loyalty, and unselfishness-which will make our lives richer and our useful- ness greater. It may be true, as the wit says, that the only thing improved by breaking is a record. lt is wonderful, yes, to break a record, to win, but in competition there is only one first place. Life is not so exacting. There are many first places. The important rec- ord to break is one's own-to do better today than yesterday, through one's own efforts and through cooperation, loyalty, and unselfishness, to seek a better world. MRS. MARION P. GAINES ean of guiclance School Spirit is a somewhat intangible quality, but the end result is much in evidence. This end result is, of course, sports- manlike conduct. You students at Clovis Union High School have developed a fine record for sportsmanship. You have coopera- tively developed a most acceptable code of fair play, This code has emphasized the fact that you as spectators represent the school as surely as if you were players on the field. Addition- ally, you have learned early in life that the good name of your school is much more important than any game Won by unfair play. Important as school spirit and the resultant sportsmanlike con- duct are, the final test will be the carryover value of these factors in your later lives. School spirit and good conduct have their counterparts in loyalty to one's country. This loyalty, tempered with proper ethics, has been a contributing factor in making our nation the greatest in the world. This nation will continue to be great only if you citizens of tomorrow are loyal to it and uphold the principles upon which it is founded, Good luck to each of you. It has been a pleasure to be asso- ciated with you, MR. LUNCI-IEON COMMITTEE Mary La Rue, Myrna Polser, Chairman, Theresa Virgin. enior 6 .7Le .S?irif of 1956 Gather round, teammates, and let us review the plays of the last tour games. Our first game was highlighted by the election of Kenny Pipes, Team Captaing Iudy Turner, Co-captain, and Tracy Pope, Secretary-Treasurer. We were green, and eager to make good. We enjoyed a Get-Acquainb ed Party and a Christmas Party. The team was solid and our spirits were high. Our second game was more exciting. Backing us was our own Sophomore Paper. With Kenny Pipes as our Team Captain, Iudy Lamonica as Co-captain, and Clara Spano as Secretary-Treasurer, activities lol- lowed rapidly. First, we had a very successful Assem- bly. We ordered our team rings. In the fun section, we had a Halloween Party, a Skating party, and a Valentine party for the birthday oi an outstanding player, Mr. Iohn Quill. To boost our dwindling finan- ces, the team instituted a series' oi cup cake sales. Success was now our slogan and we were determ- ined to stay with it. Our third game started at a fast and furious pace, with Kenny Pipes as Captain, Sharon Ferris as Co- captain, Iudy Lamonica as Secretary-Treasurer. We initiated the policy oi selling class activity cards. We proudly wore our new rings and class sweaters. In keeping with the times, our Assembly had a T.V. theme. The team displayed its dramatic talent in We Shook the Family Tree. With an eye toward the winter games, our potential champs held a Snow party, We transported the Class oi '55 to Paris tor the Iunior-Senior Prom. C'est si bon! Finally we came to the acid test: our championship game, The rfrzzultfe of this game would decide our future, Siiccc-:us was not only our motto, it was a habit. In keeping with this, we elected Ierry Cochrum our Captain, Bob Gooch our Co-captain, and Ardele lorqennen our Secretary-Treasurer, Even Hollywood took notice when we presented the play Time out for Ginger With nostalgia, we recall the after-game dances we sponsored. Our Senior Assembly was pre- sented, with traditional enjoyment. The pace was accelerated with a flurry of activities, Turnabout is fair play, so the Seniors were hosted at the Annual Prom by the Iuniors, Each occasion held a special place in our hearts and memoriesi the Senior Lun- cheon, the Baccalaureate, the picnic, The climax of this game was the Commencement, when each player totaled his score The final party of the year, the Hallelujah Hop, found us both happy to be forging ahead, and sad to be leaving the school that formed ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE the background for so many of our fondest memories. Alligator operator, Everyone knows the dear little man who lives in Boom 24 at C.U.H.S. He is oi course Mr. Brandon, our chemistry and physics teacher. Mr. Brandon graduated from the University of California in 1917 and came to Clovis High in l924. For the past thirty-two years he has dedicated his life to drilling chemistry physics algebra, and related subjects into the heads of often unwilling students, many ot whom are our parents. lt is with sorrow that we must bid good bye to this veteran educator, for Mr Brandon is re tiring after this year and taking a well earned and much-deserved rest. His deliberate mangling oi the English lan guage has added a clever humor not only to his classes, but to the entire campus as Well To us grads, the school will not be the same without the cries, 'llt's ridicolousl You re all twisticatedlu, and l'What's da matter wit you? issuing from the Science Building But these expressions will live on in the hearts and minds oi all of us who had him, and we will always associate our happy high school days with Mr. Brandon. .
