' ! 1 With this Cavalcade, the staff brings you o summary of the outstanding events and achieve- ments of the school year i954-55. lf, now and in years to come, this book helps to remind you of moments of happiness and of friendships you found at Clovis High School, our purpose will have been realized. We, the class of '55, believe that no other teacher has ever belonged to a class as Mr. Garver has belonged to our class, so it is to him that we dedicate this CAVALCADE of 1955. Mr. Garver is a symbol of the graduating Seniors. We as Juniors were the first entire class in history to be under his jurisdiction. During that year, his never-ending humor and inside slants on history made the course one to be remembered. Many of the class members came to know him best while taking part in some ot the many activities of which he is the adviser. ln our Senior year he continued teaching a number of us, and, as a friend to all of us, gave his time to anyone who needed assist- ance or counseling about future jobs, col- leges, and opportunities, always doing things that would make us never forget Mr. Phil Garver. ggi will riyf 14 W W I A xx. WE ARE perhaps living in a time of progress second to none in the history of civilization. ln what is sometimes called the l'Atomic Age we are witnessing the fastest growth in the history of the world. The development of atomic energy is iust now in its infancy and our way of life due to this development bids fair to be revolutionized within the life- time of the graduates of l955. Nor is scientific progress limited to this one discovery. We have seen in very recent years the pro- duction of the faster-than-sound iet plane, the miracle drugs, the X development of efficient produc- tion methods and the invention and use of television, which in its many adaptations has taken its firm hold on our lives. These and many more scientinc develop ents have rapidly become a part of modern living. Progress is not limited to invention. Great social movements are under way. Population is increasing at a rapid rate, and the great state of California and our own Fresno County have witnessed the greatest immi- gration of home seekers since the days of the forty-niners. Your brief four years at Clovis High have brought the greatest enrollment growth in the history of your school. You have no doubt been thrilled with the construc- tion and occupancy of our new gymnasium and other buildings. You have been privileged to see your school grow with the increase in its faculty, the development of departments, and the many added courses. You are graduating in the largest class in our history, and with a group that all of us believe to be one of the strongest ever to be graduated from our institution. Presently you will have your diplomas, your pictures will be hung in the halls, the stone will be laid, and you will become members of our rapidly increasing alumni. What then? Will progress end for you as indi- viduals, or will you accept the challenge to successful and progressive living? Will you be content with the com- monplace, or will you become leaders in a progressive world? The answer to this important question lies with each one of you as an individual. There is a place for each of you in this, the greatest of all civilizations. You are necessary for the improvement of the world, irrespective of your selection of a vocation. Give to the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you. Select your vocation early, set your goals, and work unceasingly for success. You graduate with our best wishes and with our fondest hopes for your success We look confidently to your future We will be ever ready to assist ,.. you should occasion arise May you have a happy life filled with worth Je while achievements 11111 William T Atkin District Superintendent X i , i . X 1 - 72 s , f T f if' , is . 1 lv BOARD OF TRUSTEES GEORGE HOLLESEN DELBERT SMITH EINAR COOK J. E. B ETZ Vice President CHARLES PREUSS President Clerk The trustees are responsible for the actual operation of the school, and their duties are many. They set the standards for gradua- tion. They outline the financial program for the school, prepare the budget, and direct disbursements. We do not have space here to list all their important accomplishments of the past few years, but among them are six new tennis courts, a fine gymnasium, and twenty modern class rooms. They have given Clovis High School the best that they could have given it and the Seniors of l955 express the appreciation of the entire school for their splendid efforts. VICE-PRINCIPAL PROGRESS usually results from making success out of our failures and by not being satisfied with, or affected by, that success. Since we cannot stand still, let us strive to progress each day -the graduating seniors, in going on to their life pursuits lcollege careers, service, or occupationsl, and the un- derclassmen in continuing with their respective classes to the day when their high school careers will be successfully completed. -Mr. Clark. MR. LELAND CLARK, Vice-Principal IT WAS Victor Hugo who said, Would you realize what progress is, call it Tomorrow-. A toast then to Tomorrow-the Tomorrow of fine classrooms and well-equipped gymns-the Tomorrow of 'growth in the knowledge and skill to be learned in those rooms and toward under- standing the beautiful mystery of the universe.-Mrs. Gaines. Your theme of Progress is, I believe, extremely appropriate for this Cavalcade. No other word has greater connotation than progress when referring to the past four years of your life at Clovis Union High School. The progress of your school has been little short of mirac- ulous in many ways. You have seen a remarkable growth in your student body and in the physical plant. You have all been a part of that growth, and you have played your parts well. Con- gratulations and good luck to each of you.-Mr. Kastner. DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE AND DEAN OF GIRLS MR. To carry out these activities, which range from plan- ning social affairs to conducting cam- paigns to improve the student body, com- petent and reliable students are appoint- ed to positions on the committees. The members of these committees strive to ful- fill their duties in the best interest of the students and the school. In doing this, they lose their class identity and act as mem- bers ofthe Student Body. For the opening assembly, we, the Freshmen, sat in what is now the Sophomore section of the auditorium, lt was soon discov- ered that there was not enough room downstairs for everyone, so we were all shown the way to the attic. Since then the Freshmen have always had the pleasure of sitting upstairs for the assemblies and pep rallies. We elected Ruben Barrios as our Commander-in-chief, or Pres- ident, Richard Church, Vice President, Darrellg Underwood, Secretary-Treasurer Robert Gor- cia, Boys' Athletic Manager: Connie Browning, Girls' Athletic Manager, and Janet Stephenson and Margie Bartucci, Yell Lead- ers. We also elected a standing committee, This committee was not necessary. Nobody did any- thing but stand laroundl any' how. During the year we held two dance parties. These turned out iust alike: the girls stayed on one side ot the cafeteria, and the bays on the other side, each one so bashful that he wouldnt ask his best girl to dance. By September, l952, we werent very eager to get back, but it really seemed good to know that there was one class lower than we were. This knowledge gave us a feeling of self confidence and enough spirit ta keep our heads up. It made us feel impart- 1955 22 was Tommy Adame , . Sly smile , , Naoma Alcorn . . By this time we were begin' ning to think about making mon- ey for our Junior and Senior years, These years would be our most expensive ones. During the year we held the Sophomore Sock Hop and sponsored an all' school 'roller skating party. Toward the end of the year, we ordered our class rings, with ci 55.00 deposit. We were to receive them at the beginning of our Junior year. That year was the first time that the class of '55 was given the opportunity to show its tal- ent in a class assembly, present- ed to the entire Student Body. Judi Brase and Connie Browning went over big when they did the Charleston, The audience went into an uproar when Nick Gold- man performed lt's in the Book. Other great acts, include ing the first appearance of The Squires, helped to make the assembly a success. At the beginning of our Jun- ior year, we realized what it was to have the ex-Seniors miss- ing. We didn't feel very bad about it, though, since their ab- sence made us upper classmen. 1955 24 fl' , 'lf we-gy WW, ,. .sxitil James Bridges . , F.F.A. con- Jerry Britton . . woodshop . We also published a student directory, containing the name, address, and phone num- ber of every student and teacher. We received our rings at the beginning of the term by paying balances due from the previous year, Now the second expense was looking us in the face. This was the cost of the class sweat- er. The entire class voted for the color they wanted, and white was chosen. The members of the sweater committee were Margie Bartuccr, Sally Bautan, Nick Goldman, Max Bishop, Lee Smith, Virginia Johnsen, Ruben Barrios, Jerry Williams, and Kenneth Standley. The remaining Student Body Officers then introduced themselves. Mr. Lee Clark and Mr. W. T. Atkin mentioned a few of the rules and regulations, These were mainly addressed to the Fresh- men and the transfer students. lt was lust like every other year 4b-ut so different this time. Carol. that build! , , sextet. knew which spd would come up. lt seemed that every other day twenty million people got shot. lCavalcade pictures, ol coursel, and the other day was iust chock- lull ol those goodies like order- ing class pins or cards and an- nouncements, measuring lor caps and gowns, and ol course leav- ing our naons tree tor practicing the assembly lanother hitl and holding meetings. This year, too, we got our lirst glimpse ol the outside world lon school time, that isl. We were harnessed lirm- ly and leashed tightly and then went traipsing around the state, poking our muzzles into every- thing between Reedley and Sac- ramento, with two short visits to the Fresno iail ta boot. Oh, yes, this was the year ol the new gym, the championship basketball teams, and many little things that we shall long remember as ours, lor they happened the year we were Seniors. In a few days naw we'll be walking out-the girls in white, the boys in navy blue, and with each step there will be a slight pause, a lallering, while those events ol the past lour years llit about through our minds, Finally, at the end ol that trail, we'll sit down on our bleachers for the last time as a group, and take our seats among the men and women ol the world. Gee, four years goes last. So long, Clovis Hi! lt's been swell. 1955 36 4,52 Veldonna Tullis , . Band prexy. . Don Turl . . Radio . . likes the James Turner . . Pipes, L.H, FOOTBALL To me, football is the greatest American sport, for it gives more boys an opportunity to excel in a highly competitive activity than any other. By no other means can a boy fill his being with courage, energy, and desire, and let it explode for 48 minutes, gaining so much good from it as on the football field. lf we were to iudge our past season only by its wins and losses, we wouldn't consider it very successful, but there is much more derived from playing the game, the score tells only a small part of it. The way a boy lives, the way he talks, the way he trains, and the way he learns to get along with others will stay with him much longer than anything else we can teach. The group l coached this year was a very fine bunch of boys, and l know that each of them, whether a senior or an underclassman, will succeed if he focuses his sights high. Winning will be a part of his life.-Coach Hutchinson. 2 V, Mme Wmrdell -I an X M1lforwBGlnc5 YN Tom Mnslowskn 'r J Ken Papas Y' at M01 Bldwop F5 1 Kent Bwlmp l 'S x N Elvin Dum ig-Q2 KZ 9? But, as everyone should know, these boys could not possibly have won the league championship without the infinite patience and capable coaching on the part of our Vice Principal-Coach, Mr. Leland Clark. The Cougar big five, composed of Waggoner, Burke, Bennett, Barnes and Tipton, went undefeated in the first half, and in doing so set a school scoring rec- ord by routing Dos Palos 80 to 49. ln the second round of the Northern Sequoia Division the Cougars were tripped up by Sanger 44 to 40 for their only loss in league competition, thus finishing the season with a 9-l record. , L ' 'if H ll X' , R4 Vi -S A' .., as g Wd gf xv,-Z, 4 z .' :Nix X but Lk .1 . li WR' ll - , l N it Q Qllrmx l fy ft it S1 it K Q W I ,.1 1,5 1 y . ji if tst i f S 4 QB x I 'is t -. After a slow start, the Clovis Varsity Baseball team, tutored by Coach Al Fages, assisted by Ruben Barrios, hit top form midway in the season. Spearheaded by the timely hitting of veterans Buddy Wagoner, Ted Hammack, and Kent Bishop, and Fres- no High newcomers Cloyce Keeney and Fred Dau, the Cougars had a very success- ful season. Max Bishop, a senior, and Cliff Bernar- doni, a sophomore, handled most of the pitching chores, with David Robinson, a southpaw, always ready for relief. The top fielding of Dale Lowery behind the plate, Ted Dawson, at second base, and Dennis Houx in the outfield were consid- erable factors in the Cougars' success. Much credit should go to LeRoy Brockett, Albert Alvarado, Ken Pipes, and Elvin Dau, who were always ready to step in when- ever they were needed. r 3 . . .. :::.r-N .1 '!', . 1 I R - .s.f-ffrzennnuez'-'LPWA . . Swimming is a sport that brings out the best competitive spirit of boys and girls alike. Racing tor a fast relay or tor distance is a hard and tiring, but rewarding ex- perience, tor all who participate. Under the capable coaching of Miss Betty Lan- caster, this year's team boasted a number of very good swimmers, including Barbara Wright, Lee Moses, and Bill Henrichs. Because of the new facilities set up by our new gymnasium, Clovis has provided a tumbling program for the boys. The main purpose of this sport is to develop better co-ordin- ation in the body. The boys, under the supervision of Coach Allen Hutchison, gave up part ot their lunch hour to practice so that they would be ready to per- lorm during halftime activities at basketball games. The popularity of this sport at Clovis is growing rapidly, and it will probably be an important part of the physical education program next year. Special acknowledgment must be given to our advisers, Mrs. Bliss, Mr. Bendoski, and Mr. Harris, on whom could be heaped a multitude of adjectives such as endur- ing, encouraging, and patient. We owe a note of appreciation to Mr. Chiladoux for his advice and help in connection with the art work. To our principal, Mr. Atkin, to the faculty, and to the student body, whose ready cooperation was always given, to Mr. Maxwell, and to the Thomas Lithograph Company, whose fine technical assist- ance was essential, and to our advertisers, whose manifold generosity made this book possible, we also say, 'l'hanks.
