ATKIN Principal of Clovis Union High School IILIIVIS UNIIQIN HIGH SEHIJIIL 1951-52 The story of the school year 1951-52 at Clovis Union High School unfolds as you turn the pages of this, the sixteenth, issue of Cavalcade. It tells of many happy hours, of much accomp- lished, and of rnuch yet to be done. The dedication to mechanics should remind us of some things which are desirable for suc- cessful living. A good mechanic plans his work carefullyg he proceeds with precision and care, and he makes an occasional check to determine the success of his project and to assist him in laying out future works, Successful students and successful people generally follow this pattern, Progress rarely comes by accident. Careful planning is essential to successful living. Annual time is closely related to graduation time. It gives us all a feeling of joy and a sense of accomplishment as we see the Seniors receive their diplomas. The class of 1952 is an unusual group and one which we fully expect will be successful in their life after high school. Congratulations from all of us of the Faculty upon your gradu- ation and our best wishes also for your future success. For all in the school community, I desire to express our thanks and appreciation to Miss Cum- mings and her staff for this fine production. Your efforts will make possible many happy mo- ments for hundreds of people as they turn the pages of the Cavalcade now and in the many years to come. I BU H11 UP TH STEES gm I. E. BRETZ Secretary of the Board DELBERT SMITH Presideni of the Board EINAR COOK CHARLES PREUSS GEORGE HOLLESEN ...av-0 , MM J.. .. , g,,,.,-- ' NORMAN PATCHIN Boys' Counselor Director ot Guidance As you read the N352 Cavalcade, you will be reminded of many events that have taken place during the l95l-52 school year. You are aware that it has been a full and large year for you. Clovis High, as a whole, also has had a tull and large year-a full calendar of academic and extracurricular activities and the largest student body in its history. As your Director ot Guidance and, equally as important, as a person, I am grateful for this opportunity to extend my compliments to you, a cooperative and enthusiastic student body, for your efforts in making the school year one that We can all remember as a pleasant and constructive step in growing into Yl tl. Vout-OQQN mature citizens. MRS. MARION GAINES Dean of Girls l Q Henry Ford gets the credit for that first Nhorseless carriage. Many other men of genius and ingenuity have been improving on his idea for fifty years. The electric starter, the all-steel body, four-wheel brakes, ethyl gasoline, high com- pression engines, low-pressure tires, antifreeze, shatterproof glass, sealed-beam headlights, automatic transmission - each gave greater safety, economy, comfort, power - until today we have a l952 model advertising, Look outl You'll never need all the power in this automobilel All this is very wonderful and not to be minimized. Yet mechanical achieve- ments dim intolinsignificance when we face mans crucial need to improve himself and to learn to live peaceably in the World with others. There are hope- ful signs in the World today that we are learning better to understand ourselves and one another. May the next fifty years see humanity attain as great an achievement in human relations as it has during the last fifty years in mechanical adaptation, x I P IIULTY T' f 6 ,Q I ' V 3 3 W A ,ef ir ig ' Eg em y FRANCES BARROWS IDA BLACKBURN CHARLES BLODGETT Drcrmq, English Physical Education Woodshop X X l SAMUEL BRANDON GERTRUDE BROCKS GROVER CASTER Algebra' Che1'f1iSlfY. SUMMARY Even though they won only one game, the 1951 varsity football team had a fairly successful season, for there are many things which the score boards do not show, lf the squad had had a little more depth and a few breaks, some of the scores would have turned out much better. The team had high spirits and played to the best of their ability in almost every game. The season was highlighted by a 20-13 win over Selma, The team played as a unit with everybody pulling to- gether on offense and defense, They also played good games against Chowchilla and Reedley, ' All in all the varsity really gave the student body something to yell about this year, The following are fellows who received the Play- er of the Week awards: lerry Miller, against Selma Bill Tatham, against San loaauin Memorial and Sanger, Kenneth Budd, against Reedley, and Melvin Kelley, against Dos Palos. .tr 'I HENRY NELSON WALLY WALLACE IOHN DEALY RG RE QB , U M W X 4 i , V, 39.2 SME'-neat'- -3 T '. f FlRST STRING VARSITY, Row Onet Wally Wallace, RE, Kenneth Budd, RT, Henry Nelson, RG, Iimmy Estep, C7 Ray Edwards, LG, Larry Hannah, LT, Norman Iohrison, LE.
