OLAI HAGENESS OUR DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION If you are a typical student, you no doubt take your school pretty much for granted. However, Our School is not here by chance. It is here because a lot of people are concerned enough about your education to support a school such as this. Just as Our School is not here by chance, we wont no student leaving to chance the extent to which he uses this educational opportunity his community offers. We are happy so many Clover Park students do match the effort of their community with equal effort on their own part to learn all they can, We are proud of you. T. Olai Hageness Superintendent MR. Of these, we believe that self-control is the key to vital attain- ments. There are many varieties of self-control. It may be imposed upon us through our families, our churches and the community in which we live and work. There also is the kind of self-control we impose on ourselves for fear of the consequences of our acts. Most important of all though, is the selfcontrol we develop because we desire to achieve a greater good. It is the kind that assures us of the possibility of a better tomor- row because of our self-discipline of today. George Mathew Adams suggests: Each day of our lives we should make a point to do some small thing that we would rather not do - iust as a lesson in education and self- control. Then we will enter the doing of the larger tasks of lite with zest and spirit. Best wishes for a happy and successful lite and may the blessing of God rest on each member of the class. Harold F. Here's one for a new record, Class of l96O, just out in June. Judging by its past success, l96O may well be a hit with the future. The record tells the story of several hundred students who have reached graduation. Some of them have been in Clover Park for only a little while, others for the full four years of high school. But this year's 524 seniors have agreed that the Class of 1960 is not just the largest Clover Park will boast, it shall become No, l on the popularity parade. The Class of l96O started off big, too, with 6ll sophomores. lt was the year of the sputniks and the chemise dress. Fred Eaton was class president, and Karen Johnson, vice-president. Linda Carlson took notes at class meetings, and Treasurer Maryellen Swanson counted the class funds. Keeping the mob under control was Bob Ritter, sergeanteat-arms. Lowell Halverson served as sophomore representative, thus getting his finger in the Student Council pie early. At the Hop recalls the soph. dance under the chairmanship of Mary- ellen Swanson and George Hess. And the girls were just as pretty then . . . Diane Miles was sophomore attendant at the Klahowya Dance, and Lynn Fotheringill made a smiling princess at Homecoming. The boys, too - Brad Stevens played duke at the Tolo. No less memorable was the junior year, when John Aram presided over class meetings. Nancy Peale gained experience as secretary, a po- sition she held again as a senior on the Student Council. Brad Stevens was vice-president then. Bouncer last year and again for the senior class of of '60, Jim Cooper was the ideal sergeant-at-arms. The Junior Prom, Carousel, was planned by Betty Jean Benum and Eddie Leimbacher, co- chairmen of the dance. Other social events included the annual Girls' Club Tolo, over-seen by Karen Grant, for which George Hess was prince, and the all-school play, The Great American Family. Janice Smith represented the junior class on the Student Council and again as a princess at the Klahowya Dance. At Homecoming, Karen Johnson was junior attendant. Cheering the Warriors on the warpath were Pat LaPierrie, Faith Judd, and Roberto Whinery from the pep squad. Nancy Peale won the Voice of Democracy contest at Clover Park with her appealing speech. In the National Figure Skating Championship Junior Pairs Competition, Jerry Fotheringill teamed with his sister to take first place. Finally, the senior year has come and gone, a road of many landmarks passed. The first of these might be the realization of Clover Park's own Rose Bowl dream - an invitation to the Turkey Day game in Seattle against Garfield. For their contribution to the Warrior football team, John Aram and Jeff Iverson received the inspirational award. Not only in athletics did Clover Park make a good name. An able Student Council, including seniors Lowell Halverson, Mac Greeley, John Aram, Jerry Fotheringill, Peter Kiu, Nancy Peale, and Sandra Lemon took charge of and presided over the Puget Sound Leadership Conference, which was attended by various high school leaders from the Tacoma-Seattle area. Many improvements in student government have been made. And the Century 'll Beautification Project was intro- duced to Clover Park, under John Dooley's chairmanship, promising to give C.P. grounds a needed face-lift. Rocking out on the yell stat? were seniors Karen Johnson, Roberta Whinery, Janice Smith, Dixie Covington, and Lisette Shaw. Publications had a good year with Shirlee Alfultis, Lea Bitar, Lynette Kinderman, and Sharon Machen editing the Clover Leaves. Nor can Gracie Hobart be over- looked for her management of the Klahowya. The Senior Ball, Ice Palace, planned by Noll Anne Cun- ningham and Roger Mayfield, the Senior Class Play and Judy Osborne's star performance, the Senior Banquet, and at last, Graduation .... Every member of the Class of l960 knows that here is a record which will surely hold Top Spot in the many years ahead. -t Jim Cooper, Sgt.-at-Arms erry Fotheringill, Sr. Rep. Otlicers of the class of '62 were Betty Johnson, President, Steve Cohen, Vice Presi- dent, Janice Smith, Secretary, Pat Thompson, Treas- urer to the Student Council. Vicki Harlin represented us as the Sophomore Editor of the Klahowya. Grace Tuftley was Girls' Club Representative while Ed Steele represented the boys on the Boys' Club. Autumn Leaves saw petite Pat Thompson repre- senting the Sophomores at the annual Klohowya Dance and Janice Smith was selected as Sophomore Homecoming Attendant. With Japanese Lanterns hanging and pagodas for the background, Soyo- nara was the- theme for the Sophomore Dance. Now as we look back on conjugating verbs and the death of Julius Caesar we find our Sophomore Year will always remain one of the most memorable in our minds. Sharon Starkey: Soph. Rep. E. Densmore D. This did not stop the mighty warriors from reaching the very top goal, tip Puget Sound Championship of 1959. The first game was very important to Clover Park for they faced the Renton Indians, the only team that beat Clover Park in the 1958 season. With the Warriors quarterback, John Aram, and the terrific de- fense line, we scalped the Indians 13-7. The Warriors were on their way. The Green and White beat their traditional rivals, the Franklin Pierce Cardinals, 13-7, to win their sec- ond game of the season and to retain the Chester P. Larson Trophy for the hfth straight year. CP traveled to Enumclaw to play the highly regarded Hornets. ln a close match the Warriors won by 13-7. The following week the Warriors went to Highline to play Mt. Rainier for the first time. CP trounced Mt. Rainier 32-O and was still the only team undefeated in the league. Clover Park finally got out of the 13-7 scoring slump. The following week the Sumner Spartans came to play against CP on Thompson Field, They fell as the fifth straight victim by the score of 47-O. The Redmen traveled to Highline to face the third best offensive team in the league. To many fans it was the most thrilling game of the season. With only a few minutes to play, Highline pulled ahead of Clover Park, but with John Arams passing and a good defensive strategy, we won the game 28-25. The Warriors returned home for another crucfal contest with the Puyallup Vikings. Clover Pork gained a 19-O advantage in the first half, but was shut out duirng the second half. CP won the game 19-6. Ratliff is on his way Clover Park now had the right to represent the Puget Sound league in the Turkey Day Tilt. The War- riors only had to play the Evergreen team to have a 9-O record along with the Puget Sound Champion- ship. Evergreen came to C.P. and was easily defeated by 33-13. Clover Pork was now preparing to meet the Garfield Bulldogs Thanksgiving Day. CP BENCH SEASON RECORD SCHEDULE CP. Clover Park was ready to face the Bulldogs for the second time. The team had practiced at home and went to Seattle for a practice session before the game, In the beginning minutes John Aram was iniured and had to leave the game. Buzz Riegel, a Junior quarterback, took over as acting quarterback. Garfield had gone ahead, but Clover park fought back and scored in the last quarter of the game. Garfield won T3-7. There were many outstanding individuals like Buzz Riegel, but it was the team's effort and drive that showed the Seattle team, that we were tops and hard to beat. The student body of Clover Park wishes to extend to the foot- ball team and the coaches our congratulations on winning the Puget Sound Championship. CONGRATULATION WARRIORS! 9 . All alone. The last game of the season the Warriors traveled to Enumclaw winning easily with the high score of 76-68. Thus Clover Park won their first basketball title since l942. In i942 the Warrior team won entry to the State Tournament through district playoffs - - - but lost out in its first two games. Two years ago Clover Park played in a complicated playoff for a tourney spot, osing to Port Angeles, defeating Renton and then losing to Highline. Thus it brings the Warriors up to the i960 season playoffs. The games were held on the Puyallup fioor, Clover Park played the Renton indians far their first playoff games, The Warriors had a bad start in the tirst quarter but they came back fighting in the second half. With their strong efforts in the 2nd halt CP was unable to win over Renton. Renton won 50--30. The following night CP played the Franklin Pierce Cards. There was not more than tive points difiference throughout the whole game until the last quarter. The team put out their best eFfcrts but they came out on the losing end by 50-41 score. This ended the last game for our mighty Warriors. There were many individuals who were outstanding but it was the teams effort and drive that helped give CP its first championship basketball team in eighteen years. The Student Body of Clover Park would like to extend its congratulations to Coach Mason and the War- rior Basketball team for winning the Puget Sound Southern Division Championship. We are truly proud of each and every one of you. CONGRATULATIO 'QIORSI 83 if .cf Andy Cokornis Jeff Iverson SEASON RECORD Cop Pew, ....CLOVER PARK ...... ... The Girls' Club was in charge of concessions at football and basketball games. They donated their time and effort to the Thanksgiving and Christmas drives for needy families in the area. The two biggest social gatherings of the year are the Girls' Club Tolo and the Mother-Daughter Tea, The Tolo was held on February 27th. The tea, held for senior girls and their mothers proved very successful. The Girls' Club Cabinet has truly provided a way for all girls to belong and serve our school.
