Chances are no one would be more amazed than Mr. Emer- son were he here today to watch us literally trying to hitch on to a star. But we suspect that wasnlt exactly what he had in mind. He was using the metaphor to enlarge his reader's horizons - to bring him out of himself. The purpose of education, too, is just that - to expand one's thinking - oneis spirit beyond one's self. There is nothing more pathetic than a sharpened intellect preoccupied only with its own little world - self-comfort, self-security, self-safety. We believe from your training at Clover Park that you will know how to keep your feet on the ground. However, we hope your training is such that your spirit - the real you - will do some soaring. Only through giving of yourself to a worhwhile cause or need -4 by hitching to a star, inetaphorically speaking - will you give meaning to the education your community gave you. May that education be a launching platform for the brightest, most useful life possible. T. OLAI HAGENESS, Superintendent. 6 SCHQOL BCARD MEMBERS OF THE BOARD: L. to R.: Mrs. Floybelle Shield, Mr. Dwight L. Morgan, Walter W. Hutchinson, Mr. A. H. Reeder, Mr. John H. Perhaps it could be better expressed by the saying A lot of money passed this way . . . and that. The money that the accounts ofhce of the student body handles is enough to buy roughly 400 cars. that is if they are Yolkswagens! Mr. Zelenak Marcia McLean Under the leadership of Mr. Merrill and Mr. Peterson, The school safety patrol did an admirable job of preyenting serious accidents. The heart of the system is the Student Council. which is responsible for the actual running of the Associated Student Body. The Council is in charge of all student records. funds, social affairs, industry, and is represented by one person from each of the four classes. The Student Relations Committee represents the main artery because it coordinates the many activities of the school. The Committee consists of the four class presidents and the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Presidents. They are responsible for the general welfare of all the students. Finally, the Representative Assembly is the network of arteries and veins that carries the desires, complaints, and suggestions of the students to the Student Council. where they are acted upon. Our student government is well run and we can be proud of it. Let's always keep it that wavl Round Table Warriors CLOCKIVISE: R. Longstreth. F. Young. Mr. Fynboe. J. Smith. lXT. Myhre. J. lXIcCoy. The follow- ing ten meets were highlighted by the Highline Relays and the Clover Park Invitational. These meets brought together some of the top performers in the state. Clover Parkis cin- dermen showed well in both meets and the young squad looked promising. Seniors Dick Link, Mike Smith, Norm Bykerk, and Frank Densmore were putting in their last sea- son for the Warriors, but a strong Held of juniors: Jeff Iverson, Skip Rash, Glenn Mederios, Chuck Heinze, and Hugh Hedges, to name a few, gave Coach Micera a prom- ise of an even better squad next year. Sophomores Don Stewart, Tim Stratton, Roger Brown, and Don Densmore also performed well and looked as if they would develop into strong contenders in future years. ,A Xl. Pleased with the performance of his golfers, Coach Gerry Austin continued to have a top notch golf team. The system of scoring was changed this year from reg- ulation hole-by-hole match play to a point system. Each player gets one point for a bogie, two for a par, three for a birdie, etc. Then the Five man team points are to- taled and the highest score wins. The returning seniors were Ron Alexander, Tom Faragher, and Charlie Sieg- mund. Returning with them were Dave Ryan, and Johnny Wilhelm, both juniors. The team was hurt by the graduation of some top performers, but did well in competition with the ex- pected smooth performances of several rising newcomers. There were seven matches consisting of girls' singles, boys, singles, girls' doubles, boys' doubles and mixed doubles, Returning for the boys were Mac Greeley and Bert Bertucci. Promising sophomores were Jim Burton, Anclris Cakarnis and Alan Sussman. The girls' section had several performers from last season: Marita Cakarnis, Pam Morton, Mary .Io Corliss and Sue Smith. The ,57-,58 version of the netmen compiled a 5 win - 2 loss record and a tie for second place in the league. Only Highline and Enumclaw managed to get by the VVarriors. Coming in to fill the gaps were Bill Johnson, catcher g Dennis Ridenour and Walt Gasparovich, pitchers, Billy White, outfield 5 and Buzz Reigal, catcher. R CTU I NOT PI The well-chosen annual All-School-Play for this year, The Great American Family, has been highly recom- mended by the National Thespians Society for all phases of American dramatics. Greg Seymour, an aspiring novelist, had his grand il- lusion dampened by the five little diaper- users delivered by the stork. The hectic, but wholesome, family inspires Greg to use his own home activities as the basis for his long awaited novel. It is a play of charm, humor, and truth and is typically American, RQ!!! Active in every school function and sport, the junior class did much to improve the character and reputation of Clover Park. Representing the junior class on the football team were Hugh Hedges, John Aram, Ron Ratliff, Billy White, Fred Heany, Nick Iverson, George Hess, Jeff Iverson, Gary Buffo, Roger Southward, Mike Cloyd, Rich Thorecn, Jim Mathews and Lee Gollies. The hoopsters of eleven years in school were John Aram, Jim Gonners, Chuck Morberg, Cap Peterson, Frans Sperner, Mike Gloyd, Dick Thoreen, Mark Piper, Bill White, Walt Gasperovich, Ron Ratliff and Jeff Iverson. All hail the royalty in the junior class! Redhead Karen Johnson was elected to represent her class at home- coming and Janice Smith was chosen to stand as royalty at the Klahowya Dance. George Hess proved popular to the girls when he was elected as tolo prince. The active juniors won the annual activity ticket drive at the opening of school, thus showing their strength to the other classes. Annual staffers included Lonnie Bender and Lorene Quinn who put together the junior section. And last but not least, Pat LaPiere, Faith Judd and Roberta Whinery took an active part in the school yell staff. flkf fy 'Y fri' x . ff 4 A' ,Q We sf ' , :S -- v V f, x X S f Qc xy '-f 1, W5 Tv ,XV r- A if f 'Q Sf ',, c t N? One bar pins were awarded each new member and the seniors were given in exchange for their three bar pin a bright gold permanent Torch pin engraved with the name of the school. Club meetings throughout the year were varied and interesting, much along the same style as their initiation held in November. The get- togethers were times of fun and entertainment proving that you can still have fun getting good grades. O Thespions ROW I: L. Wescott, J. Tatum, K. Richardson, P. Rice. S. Fogg, E. Cables, D. We of the Klahowya Staff have enjoyed bringing them to you and we smcerly hope that you will enjoy them just as much in the future. True, there were many problems, each different and challenging, but they were overcome and here is our result. It would be impossible to list all the students and members of the community that helped to com- pose this book, but I would like to personally thank . . . . . . Mr. Don Turya, the annual advisor, who was more help to me in more ways than one. . . . Mr. Jim Palm, American Yearbook representative. . . . Mr. Harold Gray, principal, who helped with the administrative problems. . . . Mr. Claude Harta, the photographer who gave his all to topnotch photography work in the book. . . . Rita Aycock and Marsha Tveten, senior class editors. . . . Shirlee Alfultis, advertising manager. . . . All the staff mothers and dads, who were understanding on work nights and special work days and co-operated in every way possible. . . .
