You, the men and women of the maintenance, cafeteria, and office staffs, and to you, our faithful nurses and bus drivers, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks. You, in maintenance, who have been responsible for keeping our school in re- pair and looking neat and clean, who kept the grounds cut and trimmed, go our deepest appreciation. And to you, cooks, go a special thanks for making our meals at school as much like our meals at home. We will always remember our kitchen away from home. As members of the office staffs you were responsible for seeing that our cleri- cal and attendance records were kept up-to-date and in good order. Safety first is your motto, nurses, and we fully appreciate your standing by us with a band-aid. We owe our good health to you and thanks for standing by us throughout good times and during flu times. And you, our bus drivers, we recognize as the people who see that we get to school and home safely. And to all the other men and women in the background scenes at Clover Park and to these listed we give our deepest thanks for jobs well done. 4 rg x ,M ' X- v?'3'f5f 1? STANDING: Mike Smith, Tom Smith, Social Sec., and Roger Woodcock, Sgt. at Arms. Tiny but mighty, Clover Park's Junior Class of 1958-59 surged ahead under the leadership of class president Dave Paup. The capable officers aiding Dave in his duties were Dave Moody, vice-president, Marilyn Snyder, treasurer, Tom Smith, Social Secretary 3 and Roger Woodcock, Sgt. at Arms. Of invaluable assistance throughout the year were our able advisors, Miss Helmer and Mr. Storvick. Working hard on the student council as our Junior Class Representative was Bert Johnson, in Boys, Club. Also a mem- ber of the student council was Rich Longstreth. Representing the junior class on the Girls' Club Cabinet' were Linda Burgoyne, Ann Cook, Sharon Lapsley, Karon Richardson, and Sue Norman. There were several juniors on the cheering squad at Clover Park this year, including Neva Jo Berg, Dawn Walker, Jim McCoy, Helen Bitar, and Frank Densmore. Junior attendant on this year's Klahowya Dance was Neva Jo Berg and junior Homecoming attendant was Audrey Ockfen. The all-school play, entitled A Young Man's Fancy, gave a number of juniors a chance to display their acting ability. April found the junior class sponsoring their annual prom. It was one of the most successful dances of the year. Our championship football team was aided by member- ship of athletic juniors, namely-Don Alsbury, Gary Ellison, Dick Linn, John McConaghy, Steve Nagy, Mike Smith, Tom Smith, Roger Woodcock, Dennis Ridenour, Dennis Lamberth, Robert Ketner, Bert Johnson, Jim Homola, Seth Hanson, Pat Halliday, Dennis Erickson, Dennis Dolley, Jack Brown, Charles Bergeron, and Marty Benum. CIpQtSS OF 1960 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS SEATED: Mrs. Hoar, Karen Johnson, vice-president, Fred Eaton, president, Mr. Fossen. STANDING: Lowell Halvorsen, representative, and Maryellen Swanson, treasurer. Except in those days when we were lucky enough to sneak another holiday, we sophomores wandered from class to class five days a week rejoicing over our recently mutilated biology victim, geometry problem, Tale of Two Cities, or newly acquired knowledge of the French language. Wle have the distinction of being the largest class at Clover Park. Our size is due mainly to the arrival of students from Du Pont and Curtis Junior High Schools. Under the capable leadership of our class president, Fred Eaton, backed up by vice-president Karen Ann Johnson, secretary, Linda Carlson, treasurer, Maryellen Swanson g and Sgt. at Arms, Bob Ritter, and the supervision of Mr. Fossen and Mrs. Hoar, we, the class of 1960 had a very busy and eventful year. George Hess and Maryellen Swanson acted as chairmen for planning and presenting the annual sophomore sport dance. Held in the Girls' Gym in January, the theme was 52 At the Hop. Diane Peterson represented the sophomore class on the Girls' Club Cabinet, serving in the position of Appearance of the School chairman. Our representative on the student council was Darrell Halvorsen. Lynette Kinderman was sophomore representative on the GAA cabinet. Roberta Wlhinery, Katie McGratl'1, and Linda Farring- ton were on the Klahowya staff. Diane Miles was elected Klahowya Dance attendant. Lynn F otheringill was a Homecoming Princess. The boys who represented us in football were John Aram, Gary Bulfo, Mike Cloyd, John Chapman, Jim Cooper, Ken- neth Depres, Fred Eaton, Robert Felker, Bill Gretler, Don Grogan, Alvin Heany, Hugh Hedges, George Hess, Jeff Iver- son, Nick Iverson, Bruce Knox, Bill MCDOL1g3ll, Skip Rash, Bob Rutledge, Terry Ryan, Roger Southward, Richard Thoreen, Billy White, Jim Wickersham, and Jim VVootan. But a damper was put on this fine season by the Garfield Bulldogs of Seattle, who edged Clover Park 610 in the Thanksgiving Day Bowl in Seattle. In pre-season ratings, Clover Park and Renton were both considered to be the teams to beat. Clover Park had many of the players back from its 1956 championship squad, while Renton had almost its entire starting eleven from the previous season. Renton started living up to its press notices first as the Indians swept their first two games over Foster, 32-6, and Sumner, 52-6. Clover Park, in the meantime, placed second in the TAC Grid-Go-Round, then squeaked by Kent-Meridian 20-13 on a touchdown by Gary Ellison in the last ten seconds of play. Then the Warriors caught fire! Auburn fell victim to a 47-0 scoring avalanche as Clover Park dedicated the new stands on the north side of the football field in a big way. After a two weeks layoff, the CP eleven rushed past Puyallup 2646 to set the stage for the big game with undefeated Renton at Clover Park on October 18. Tom Smith, the Warriors outstanding breakaway halfback, rompedi65lyards on the first play from scrimmage to give Clover Park an early lead and Coach Gerry Austinfs charges went on to win handily, 31--13. Clover Park traveled to linumclaw to down the once- beaten Hornets, l3-0, at Enumclas- s Homecoming. Then Tom Smith Bertil johnson Rick Wheeler Thomas, Roger Southwarcl, and Steve Nagy. FOOTBALL came another crucial ball game as undefeated Highline invaded Clover Park's Thompson Field. But Tom CFirst Playj Smith came through for the third home game in a row with a touch- down on the first play, this time for 72 yards, and the Warriors came through with another convincing win, 27-6. The reserves played much of the game against Sumner as the Warriors coasted to a 27-12 victory. The final game of the regular sea- son was against Franklin Pierce for the Chester A. Larson Trophy as well as for undisputed possession of first place in the Puget Sound League and a second straight undefeated season. Clover Park continued their home field mastery by crushing the FP Cardinals, 41-12. Neal Kneip, 198-pound fullback, scored 23 points for Clover Park in this final game to wind up the season with 81 points, tops in the league. With the league championship came the bid to play in the Thanksgiving Day Game against Garfield, the Seattle City League Champions. Clover Park had been named the top team in the state by the AP poll prior to the game. The playing field of the Seattle Memorial Stadium was extremely muddy and the offensive attacks of both teams bogged down. Through three quarters and most of the fourth, the game was scoreless. Then an offside penalty and an intercepted pass stopped Clover Park deep in Garfield territory. With 1:10 left in the game Garfield scored on a seven yard pass to win the ball gaime and the state championship. Clover Park rated fourth on the final state standings. Coach Mason, in his second season as head basketball coach, built a well-rounded squad out of a group of boys, most of whom had never played together before. But for a mid-season losing string of five straight, the Warrior five could easily have finished second in the Puget Sound League. As it was, though, the Clovers' 8-8 record was only good enough for seventh place in a well-balanced league. The Warriors were only one game out of third place and two out of second place. The Warriors won five in a row at the start of the season after dropping the season opener to Franklin Pierce. Another loss, to Sumner in the last three seconds, followed by two more wins gave the Clover Park quintet a 7-2 mid-season record. But then came the tailspin. After the five straight losses, the Warriors finished out the season with four wins in the last five games. For the first time in over a decade, Clover Park qualified to enter the West Central District play-offs for the State Tourna- ment. CP dropped their first game to Port Angeles, 45-44, then beat Renton, but were put out of the tournament by Highline, who went on to State. Outstanding individual performers for Clover Park during the 1957-58 season were Jerry Hoxsey and Chuck Cheatham. Cheatham led the team in rebounding and was second in scor- ing. But his chief contribution was his outstanding defensive work. Hoxsey was voted both team captain and inspirational award winner. Other members of the starting team on and off during the season were Gary Thomas, Scott Drysdale, Jim Worth- ington, Roland Downing, Al Van Buskirk, Mike Smith, and Jim Lavigne. The remaining letterrnen, all seniors, were Rick Wheeler, Eddie Wells, and Nick Brown. Action in the final Clover Park-Franklin Pierce game, won by Clover Park, A L 54-49. RESERVE BASKETBALL Coach Wally Erwin suH'ered a mid-season setback when he lost three of his starters, but his reserve time recovered to go on and place second in the Puget Sound League. The Warrior reserves record was 12-7 for the year. Led by high-scoring center Cap Petersen, the Green and White B squad whipped every Puget Sound League foe at least once. Other starters at the end of the season were Jim McCarthy, Clayton Jackson, Phil White, Jeff Iverson, and Chuck Morberg. The reserves' season was marked by several close games, with two going into overtime. Clover Park dropped two games during the season by one point, but the Warrior forces won several contests by four or less points margin. More often than not, though, the Clover Park reserve wins were somewhat one-sided. A host of sophomores played the major portion of the time for the re- serves, promising things to come in the next few years, Dave Paup, Clayton Jackson, Dennis Wilson, and Jim McCarthy were the only juniors on the squad. Dave Harse was the reserve manager. I-1' - Clover Park's sophomore squad finished second in their league during the 1957-58 season, compiling a 10-4 league record. Coach Jack Price's squad was 12-4 for the season, averaging 45 points a game. The sophomores play in a league which consists of Clover Park, Puyallup, Franklin Pierce, Bellarmine, two Lincoln teams, and two Stadium teams. Walt Gasparovich was the leading scorer for the sophs with an average of 12.5 points per game. Rich Thoreen and Mike Cloyd were the next high scorers. Gasparovich, Cloyd, and Thoreen were all high in rebounding. The other two starters on the team were Nick Iverson and Mac Greely. This was the second year in a row for the sophomore team to finish second in their league. Two years ago, the CP sophs won the championship for the second year in a row, so Warrior sophomore teams have done creditable jobs the last few years. TRACK With a nucleus of seven lettermen, the Clover Park track team goes into the 1958 season with as good a chance of any team of taking the Puget Sound League title. Last year the Warriors had a habit of taking second place in the big meets, while winning most of the dual and triangular affairs, A reversal of this procedure could send the CP squad a long way this year. Coach Micera's team looks strong in the running events but may need help in the field events. Two lettermen, Steve Davison and Mike Foshaug, give the Warriors a strong one-two punch in the 100-and 220-yard dashes. Tom Smith and Terry Landreth also look good in the sprints. John Welker, another letterman, should be one of the top 440 men in the state. Jack Blessing gives good strength in the hurdles. In the longer running events, Rich Harvey, Dexter Trone, and Ray Van Valkenberg, all lettermen, appear to have things well in control. Harvey is a miler while Trone and Van Valkenberg run the 880. Charlie Repik is the only letterman in field events. Repik is a pole-vaulter, and could be one of the best in the league this year. Frank Densmore is another top vaulter for the Warriors. The loss of high jumper and broad jumper John Sparks, who graduated last year, will be sorely felt in these events. Phil White and Eddie Wells look like the best prospects in the high jump. John Welker and Terry Landreth should bolster the squad in broad jumping. Dick Link is the top shot-putter for the Warriors this sea- son. The Warriors were exceptionally weak in this event last year, and Link oould be a welcome point getter. Clover Park's 880-yard and mile relay teams are perennially strong, and this year should be no exception. Coach Monterie Fossler's tennis team is one of the best in the Puget Sound League. The netmen had to play Enumclaw, league champions two years in a row, in their first league match. The winner of this match is the probable league champion. The boys' section of the team appears to be especially strong. There are four male lettermen, Bob Burton, Scott Drysdale, Charlie Merrow, and Mike Haynes. Promising and Bill newcomers are Jens Fynboe, Bob Buchanan, Bertucci. Other members of the boys' squad are Al Mode, Mac Greely, Morgan Mitchell, Harry Picton, and Bob Taylor. Marite Cakarnis is the only girl back from last year's team. But Pam Morton and Mary Jo Corliss are both showing good promise of being strong performers. Linda Wirsing, Karn Johnson, Paula Sussman, and Noreen Radovich complete the girls' team. Clover Park Hnished second in tennis last year to Enumclaw, losing to the Hornets 3-2. Bob Burton, num- ber one singles player was unable to play that day also. The boys' doubles and mixed doubles teams were both un- defeated during the season for Clover Park last season. The loss to Enumclaw was the only loss for the Warrior racket swingers last season, and only Puyallup and High- line were able to keep from being shut out by the Warriors. 1 l l Bob Burton Marite Cakarnis Jon Sivertson GOLF TEAM GOLF TEAM, STANDING, Left to Right: Dick Picton, Norm Thompson, Tom Faragher, Rick Wheeler. The Warriors were undefeated in league play last year and finished second in the Everett Invitational, the State Championship of golf. The Warriors lost four starters from last sea- son's team, but capable reserves can be counted on to step in and fill the bill. Jon Sivertson, number one player part of the time last season, is the number one player on the team. Craig Melby, Norm Thompson, and Ted Fix are other top players on the squad. Rick Wheeler, Steve An- Steve Anderson, Jon Sivertson, and David Ryan. Outfielders Robin Cox, Chuck Cheatham, and Terry Schmalz show what will happen to any balls that get out of the infield. derson, Tom Faragher, and Harry and Dick Picton may also see some action for the Clover Park team. Last year it took approximately a 75 average to make the first team. But now that three-year lettermen Chuck Hunter, Paul Lemcke, and Gary Congdon have graduated, the maximum score for getting on the starting five may go up to as high as 80. Even though the Warriors lost four of five starters last year, the golfers still look like good bets to cop their fifth straight league championship. The girl's team shoots in two positions, prone and sitting. Undefeated, they won the league championship. Four position shooting is required of all varsity shooters. The four positions are prone, kneeling, sitting, and ofifhand. There are eight different school teams shooting in the varsity league. Clover Park came in third place in the first match, placed fourth in their next meet, and in the following match again placed third. Supplied with a host of returning lettermen, Coach Wally Erwin faces the baseball season with an optimistic outlook. Several new standout diamond performers could make the 1958 team one of the best in Clover Park history. Returning for his third season as a varsity performer is outfielder Nick Brown. Nick was one of the top hitters in the league last year and shows good signs of a repeat performance. Other 1957 letter winners are Robin Cox, Terry Schmalz, Bob Ketner, Neal Kneip, Bill Baty, and Rudy Maurin. But pushing these players for starting positions will be senior outfielder Chuck Cheatham, senior pitcher and infielder Jerry Hoxsey, and Cap Peterson, sophomore shortstop. Only two players were lost from last year's Clover Pat McG0ldrick, and Bill Koon. Park team, first baseman Jim Kems, and catcher Roy McKasson. Kneip should fill in adequately for Kems, but finding a replacement for McKasson may be more of a problem. Leading contenders for the catching spot are Bill Johnson and Don Jordan. The 1957 Clover Park team won five and lost three in league play to finish third. Fifteen games are slated for the Warrior baseballers this season, eight league contests and seven practice games. The probable starting lineup will be Rudy Maurin and Jerry Hoxsey, starting pitchers, Don Jordan, catcher, outfielders Nick Brown, Chuck Cheatham, and Terry Schmalz, first baseman Neal Kneip, second baseman Bill Baty or Jim Worthington, shortstop Cap Peterson, and third baseman Bob Ketner.
