Nothing for the poets to glorify. Nothing to go down in the annals of history. But for nearly a thousand Clover Park students it is an important date. It is a date which marks the end of a year ot accomplishment. For many. it marks the end ot their high school days. Yes, Iune 8. 1956 marks the end ot a long road, a road that uses memories for milestones. And while the year is gone, never to be reclaimed, the students ot Clover Park can regain the memories of a year V' I 11' llxxi ,R ff W l.cll...lNA all gone by. Though we may not yet realize it, Clover Park has played an important part in the shaping of our future. The faculty, with their advice and help: the people behind the scenes, from the custodians to the cafeteria and health staffs: all these form the heart and soul of Clover Park. All buildings are make of brickand stone: it is through the people within that they obtain their spirit. To these people we want to say thanks, for the spirit they have given to Clover Park. It is to these people that the 1956 Klahowya is respectfully and humbly dedicated. Tomorrow's Leaders - -,,,.,.4,..,.r.yis3w -if 5 l nass is il! si, aimgfekj S was 91. The Council was made up of iourteen members, eleven elective offices, and three appointive. The Council, at different times during the year, was divided into committees to look into the various possibilities of modifying our student government. Later, a student committee of Al Darby, lack Frost, Io Ann Arsenault and Alex Mahomet was appointed to meet with the faculty and draw up a basic draft to serve as a skeleton constitution. As the year began drawing to a close, anticipation of a gross change was appar- ent to observers. People Behind the cenes-- chool Board MRS. MADDEN NELLIE WOOTAN MR. T. N21 Student Direct or Bond Seventy students constituted the membership of this year's band under the direction of Mr. Ren- wick Taylor. Officers of the band that formed the band council were: Keith Holsapple, president: Bob Nylund, vice president: Donna Gius, secretary: Bob Iones, treasurer: Bill Harter, band manager: Alice Umpstead, librarian: Rolly Franz, student director: and Neal Kneip, sophomore representative. The Mid-winter Concert was presented Ianuary 26 in the Hudtlotl Iunior High School auditorium with the Hudtlotf band and dance band. On February 18 eleven band members and two ensembles attended the solo-ensemble contest at Puyallup High School. Two of the students were- rated superior, seven excellent, and two were good. The two ensembles, the French horn quartet and the- woodwind quintet, received superior ratings. From March 1-3 seven students went to Spokane- tor the All-state Music Convention sponsored by the Washington Music Educators Association. Keith Holsapple and Alice Umpstead played in the orches- tra, while Ross Richards, Iohn Srail, Leigh Huseby Dave Tolt, and Dick Ryan played in the band. The band also marched in the Daffodil Parade on April 14. SENIOR BAND The Band Continued to Improve. DANCE BAND Donce Bond Following Mr. Taylor's announcement that Dance Band rehearsals would begin on Tuesday and Thurs- day mornings each week beginning in October, twenty students turned out, comprising Clover Park High's largest dance band. Its debut was made at a pep assembly in No- vember and shortly after that it appeared in an assembly featuring the music department. Since this year was Clover Park's turn to play at the Hoop-Go-Round, the Dance Band got its first large audience when it was featured as entertain- ment during the halftime of that event at the C.P.S. fieldhouse. Orchestre: The Clover Park Orchestra directed by Renwick Taylor first appeared publicly in an assembly before the student body during October. Its next major performance was for the Christ- mas Concert on December 23. In February the string quartet consisting of Kris Iohnson and Virginia Swan. violin: Barbara Sieg. viola: and Carol Long, cello, played in the solo and ensemble contest at Puyallup where they received a superior-the 'highest possible rating. Virginia Swan and Kris Iohnson attended the All-state Music Convention where they played in the orchestra March 1-3. ORCHESTRA Remember Those Concerts -- CHOIR COUNCIL Dave Lukens, T. Hoffman, K. Hruby, M. Dobbe, B. Whinery, Mrs. Malmin, director Choir cmd Ensembles The climax of a rewarding year came for the C.P. vocal groups this May at the Spring Concert when the Girls' Glee, Mixed Ensemble, and the Choir all gave thrilling performances. It was a year of triumph, mixed with tragedy for the vocal groups. After the annual Christmas concert, Miss Mary Ellen Davidson, C.P. vocal director, was involved in an automobile accident on her way home. She was to miss the rest of the school year. Assuming the rough job of re-organizing the vocal groups went to Mrs. Doris Malmin, who graciously consented to do this job. The work involved was tremendous, but the choir and Girls' Glee rewarded the effort involved by receiving straight superior ratings at the choir contest at Renton. A new look was initiated by the Girls' Glee this year as they abandoned the usual tradition of wear- ing formals, and instead made their own blouses, skirts, and sashes to create a uniform look. From the Girls' Glee the Girls' Glee Ensemble was formed. MIXED ENSEMBLE Row l: S. Hucldell, D. Van Winkle, I. Stephanson. S. Gomnson. B. Seig I. Measaw, I. Pakiser. D. Bogue. D. Hellyer. Row 2: I. Footbo II Traveling to Kent-Meridian. the home of the eventual league champions. the Warriors were caught unawares by the Royals and tromped 31-14. Seeking revenge on the hapless Auburn Trojans the next week, the Warriors, led by halfback Dick Forsythe. walloped the Trojans 20-0. Forsythe con- tributed I3 points. The Warriors traveled to neighboring Puyallup to meet the touted Vikings in a highly contested battle. Capitalizing on the turn of fortunes. the Vik- ings scored on the last play of the game to run the score to 14-6. giving no indication of the actual hair- line victory. The next league contest saw the Warriors travel to Enumclaw where they took the lead over the favored Hornets 13-0. Thanks to some nearly fan- tastic passes and receptions, the Enumclaw squad caught the Warriors late in the fourth quarter. The game ended in a 13-13 tie with Roger Ockfen scoring all the C.P. points. Back in the friendly confines of Thompson Field. the Warriors ran wild with the Highline Pirates, beat- ing them for the first time in eight years. The final score read Clover Park 26. Highline 6. In the final game of the season. the Franklin Pierce Cardinals, C.P.'s traditional rival, invaded Thompson Field. Scoring late in the second quarter on a long pass, the Cardinals went to the dressing room at half-time with a 7-0 lead. The Cardinals stopped the Warriors all through the final periods. apparently having the game sewed up. With three seconds left, the Green and White pulled a play that hadn't been used all year. Urbon faded far back. and as the enemy line rushed. threw a screen pass to Forsythe. Dick scampered B0 yards for the score as time ran out. On the last play of the season, Roger Ockfen crashed over for the extra point. The Warriors had tied the Cardinals 7-7. The Green and White started off strongly by dropping Kent 25-19 in the PSL Iamboree. The War- riors were the only South team to win in this pre- season hoop tourney. ln the TAC Hoop-Go-Round, C.P. split to take second place. In the first contest the Warriors nosed out Lincoln 19-17. Stadium took the second game, and the trophy, 27-18. Sumner became the first league victim of Clover Park. C.P. led at half-time 29-19. However, the Spar- tans put on a last-half surge to come within two points of the Green and White. The final score gave the locals a 43-41 victory. Puyallup's Vikings invaded Clover Park that same week. The Purple and Gold ran into a spirited team that almost pulled the year's biggest upset. Leading in the fourth quarter, C.P. cou1dn't hold out quite long enough as Puyallup piled up enough points to win 52-45. At this time the Warriors began using a deliber- ate type of offense combined with a more aggres- sive defense with startling results. At Auburn the Warriors overturned the stunned Trojans 63-57. Theron Gray led the Warriors with 9 counters. In Puyallup's crackerbox gym, the fired-up War- riors again nearly toppled the eventual league champions. However. the Puyallup guns carried just a little too much ammunition as the Vikings pulled out, victors, by a scant five point margin, 48-43. Don Collins led C.P. with 13 points. In their next outing on the maples, the Warriors almost doubled the score of their opponents. Renton was unprepared for the new Warrior offense and more aggressive defense. With Theron Gray leading the way with 23 points, the C.P. rolled up a 51-26 triumph. Perhaps the Pirates from Highline read the press reports on the new Warrior offense. At any rate, the Pirates came prepared for a tough battle, and finally bested the Warriors 54-48. Theron Gray contributed 22 points to the Warrior cause. The Warriors repeated their earlier victory over the Sumner Spartans the next week as they pulled out a 63-60 victory. Gray and Collins hit for 18 and 13 respectively. Competing for the William Robert Pennington Memorial Trophy, the Franklin Pierce Cardinals and the Warriors waged a hot battle in which the lead changed hands repeatedly. Although Theron Gray and Mike Brownfield each dropped in 14 points, the Cardinals took the contest 61-56. At the end of the season the team selected an honorary captain and their inspiration for the season. Don Collins received both of these awards. Varsity letter winners were: lim Kerns, Mike Brownfield, Theron Gray, Gary Peterson, Don Collins, Iohn Mc- Shane, Roger Ockfen, Bob Hofeditz, Rich Miller, and Iohn Chase, manager. Although the 1956-56 hoop season did not show Clover Park on the winning side of the final tabula- tion, it did provide many of Tomorrow's Memories. l . 0 : n. o 5. The Warrior cinder team has the individual per- formers but does not have too much depth. Steve Davidson, a phenomenal sophomore, has been holding down the 100 and 220 yard dashes in the absence of Dick Forsythe who injured his back in a pre-season turnout. Iohn Welker has also been compiling a few points in the 220. The 440 seems to be Bruce Buchanan's race. ln his first two quarters of the season he lost by a short margin. In his next race he beat the defending conference champion, Dave Allan, at Renton. Leigh Huseby also ran the 440. Ben George has done an outstanding job in the half mile, running exceptionally fast and increasing in every outing. The high jump has been a pleasant surprise for Clover Park. Al Darby and Iohn Welker have been fighting it out for first place in this event. Iohn Sparks injured himself in practice and wasn't out early in the season but was ready around the end af April. After Stadium swept the broad jump from Clover Park the Warriors came back sweeping the event in the next two meets. Ted Iohnson, Al Darby and Ben George have all been jumping impressively. Al and Ted have each taken a first and third so far with Ben taking two seconds. They have all sur- passed the 20 foot marker. Al Urbon scored to 11 feet 9 inches for his best effort of the season in pole vault. However, this was only a tie for first place.
