Re- mind you of Minnesota? Am on another assignment after attending the class reunion at the alma mater. Sorry you missed the occasion. Thought you might like to hear about some of your proteges. The latest edition of the Pine Needle arrived this morning, and reading about the great success of the ski team and the debate squad at their state tournaments really brought back memories. The up-to-now record of the basketball team has them headed for the district with excellent chances. The game I saw, while there, illustrated team spirit that means victory no matter how the score stands. Coach jessop has a fine group of boys to work with. In ten short years the old home town really has expanded. New homes have been established so rapidly that it's difficult to find the boundary line between Cloquet and Esko. I imagine Ruthy Anderson, Swanhild Erickson, Bev Olson, JoAnn Cardinal, Lou Ann Prevost and their spouses had to compromise between the city and the coun- try . The new super market certainly is attractive. Dave Carlson's dream of Bein' a good butcher came true. Remember when he was just an ap- prentice down at the Public Market? just shows that determination wins over all. I noticed Fred Carlson, Bob Sell, and Norm Pentila got together and made a terrific success with their machine, auto, and electrical appliance repair shop. What with these robots to do the labor, those fellows could just as well retire. Seems Jim johnson was really serious when he talked about opening a joint on Cloquet Avenue. The Television Ice Cream Bar and Art Gallery certainly is a much patronized establishment. It's taken time, but it was heart-warming to see it a reality. Cloquet has its own medical clinic. Mary Ann Nordman, Joan Bellingham, Barbara Raski, jean Caza, and Rosie Bodie told me they give up as much time as they can spare to help as nurses aids. Full time is impossible what with families to tie one down. The two large service agencies seem to have attracted numerous '50 graduates. JoAnn Lump- pio is head accountant at Gustafson's travel bur- eau. fReally can't comprehend the necessity for one there, but then, I should have known Gusty would find a place for her.j LaVon Shipman has found a ideal secreterial position. She has ample time to write those lengthy letters to Larry. The Navy doesn't keep him in one port for long. Had a chat with Vernon Asplund. His radio station keeps him very busy. Seems as if a lot of my old classmates have hit the air waves. That half hour of Marjorie Boquist's, The Business Women at Play really shows the trend of the women of this world. Vernon Simula with his hour and a half to advise the farmers as to favor- able crop conditions, etc., is really quite a hit with the Brookston Road 4-H club. Floyd Carlson flys 0270 up from his South Dakota ranch quite often to be guest commentator. Ah - the life of the Westerner. - Got a good laugh out of Ray Kemi, joel John- son, and Gerald LaBreche. I remember when they prophesied a life of no particular line of emplo - ment. The humorous part is they've done exactlly as they intended-nothing. However, Ray Ever- son took the tracks toward success in a big way and Leo Kujawa is snapping up the moola too. Ray is no longer simply a R. R. engineer, but is up there engineering the entire Northern Pacific Net- work. Leo is working his way toward a Master's Degree in political science by spending his spare time as a Hollywood camera man. Even good old Sid Erickson is a prosperous business man. He's been on unemployment compensation for the past three years. That's what he's been working on. Had a talk with Executive Secretary of the Foreign Trade Investigation Council, Bob jubie. His diplomatic expeditions sounded fascinating. Bill Drechsler and Lois Hebert have seen a good bit of the work, too. When they paid visits to Uncle Sam after graduation they signed long- term contracts. Education was the goal of a lot of my class- mates and six, of those fourteen that were setting out to teach the future generations, came through. Donna Czock and Dids Pellerin are still together -elementary teachers. Barbara Millen and Mar- lene Manty are in the same field. Bill Jacobson and Tom Sogn are educators of the nations young- er set, too. The cousins went into medicine. Joanne Kuitu holds the top position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester fphyciatric wardj and Chubby has his own veterinary hospital in the home town. You'll love this. Lorraine Kemi wasn't kidding when she told us that she was going to be a private secretary and marry her rich boss. She's done exactly that-three times! I flew with her to New York City. Pretty neat Cessna, hubby No. III has got there. Met stewardess Helen Lind on the journey over the Atlantic. She told me Bev Evans is under contract to decorate fthe interiorsj of the new ocean clippers. Sue Churchill is handling the business angle. Gad, these career women. Oh, nearly forgot. Galen Krohn is still the bachelor he said he'd be. However, he had a bit of an accident on his trip home, via the Bum's Express. Seems he fell, fand not off one of the boxcarsj. He caught sight of her during a three minute stop somewhere between Anahime and Kokkamonga. Wish you could have seen the kids. It was swell to be with them all again. What's done is done, and every one is glad of it, was the general attitude-guess all of us are happy. Before I close, I wish to congratulate you. That five pound brook-trout of yours really looked magnificent in the school's trophy. case. You're quite the fisher, man. Until the next reunion, Sincerely, Betti Th Sec Fir sa 1 ird Row: I. Some of these are: First place High School bands at the Minneapolis Aquatennial, First Place at International Falls Forest Festival, and being chosen a Core Band of the Bemidji Band Clinic. The Band's maneuvers at halves of basketball and football games and at the District Tournament was outstanding. OUR CHAMPIONS STRUT THEIR STUFF ,,i W ' lv J. , T. The members and Mr. Sampson put in hours of hard work during the year in preparation for the annual spring concert on May 3, and the music festival in Duluth on May 4 and 5. It is unusual for a school of our size to maintain an orchestra. This, to- gether with the fact that we have received many class A ratings and also contributed a number of talented musicians to the world, makes us very proud. The Cloquet High School ski team again ranked as one of the best in the state. The Lumberjack skiers participated in three meets during the season-they were the District, the State, and a quadrangular meet with area schools. The jacks finished second to Duluth Central, the perennial winners, in both the District and State meets. Cloquet can be proud of its skiers for the fine record they compiled. Stuart Benson captured the state Slalom championship to prove himself master of this tricky and difficult course. The rest of the team showed up well in both of these meets. The jacks should be a hard team to beat when the jumping slide is completed. The jumpers are handicapped by the lack of a slide now and that means a lot during competition. Hockey The third year of competitive hockey for Cloquet proved to be a difficult season as the Jack squad was, for the most part, young and inexperienced. The entire team will be back next year and things should improve greatly during that campaign. Although the schedule doesn't show too many wins, the team was a hard driving outfit and caused bigger and more experienced teams a great deal of trouble. The boys on the squad should be commended for the long hours of hard practice and the fighting spirit they displayed. BASEBALL Coach Angelo Pergol came up with another brilliant array of baseball talent during the 1949 Cloquet High School diamond season. This powerful club set a state record with fifteen straight victories before Duluth Central finally handed them their first defeat. The team finished the season with a league record of seventeen wins and four defeats, good enough for second place. The Lumberjacks met the powerful Denfeld Hunters in the first game of the district tournament and forced the Hunters into extra innings before dropping the decision. Robert Noiseau and Chubby Eklund paced the hitters with averages of .372 and .335 respectively. However, the entire team hit and played well, even border- ing on the spectacular at times. Four members of the team graduated but capable replacements for them are on hand. The prospects for 1950 are very promising. Harry Eklund was elected captain of the 1950 team. Basketball The 1949-1950 edition of the Cloquet cage squad presented the best season's record turned in by a Lumberjack team for a number of years. The jacks finished in second place in the Big Six conference and came in fourth in the Little Big Ten and had a record of thirteen wins against six losses during the season. In the first game of the District 26 tournament the jacks met a surprising Wrenshall team. The taller Wrens battled the more experienced Cloquet squad on even terms for more than three quarters before the Lumberjacks pulled away to win, 45-33. In the semi-finals a hot shooting State-Champion Duluth Central team dumped the jacks, 58-35. Cloquet can be very proud of this team. They deserve a lot of credit for their fine season. The team won three games while losing four but considering the caliber of the teams played, this record is very impressive.
