1 I ALL., -,,.g EX LIIBIQII 3 Pulmlislwnl lm-v the Iunior :xml Scnior Classes of lllc Cloquct High School Cluquet. Nlinncsota TI-Ili WHITE DINE 1940 DEW DID ln this hook we have published a record of the events of the past school year. It has lmeen a year full of hopes, successes, fears and disappointments. ln all we have done, we have tried to he honest and upright: to be good sports in victory and defeat. Yve have worked hard and still have had our share of pleasure. May' you who read our annual share this pleasure with us. Miss SELMA LARSON DEDICATIDN The Iuniors and Seniors of 1940 dedicate their annual to Miss Selma Larson. Under her expert tutelage, mathematics classes were no longer bor- ing. Her vitality and interest in her work inspired us with interest while the clarity of her explanations enabled everyone to grasp them readily. As class advisor she competently directed many of our activities. We have missed her greatly the past few months. Thompson IQEIQ FUDTBALL W'ith only three letter men returned from last year's squad, the Cloquet football team had a fairly successful season. Coach Drew had Captain Bill Ahiers, Reynold Isaacson, George Fuller, and a promising bunch of reserves to work with. The first game, with a newly organized Carlton team, was merely a warmup and everyone but the waterboy saw action. Cloquet won handily, 20-0. Our next game was with our old rivals, the Rails from Proctor, in which Cloquet showed much potential strength in subduing them, 12-O. Playing under lights, the Lumberjacks ran into a small but scrappy Wildcat team from Morgan Park and came out second best, 20-6. Despite a thrilling seventy-five yard runback of an intercepted pass by 0rmie Forrest, halfback for Cloquet, and a last quarter drive to the twelve yard line, Cloquet was beaten by a team that took advantage of the breaks of the game and made the most of them. Playing decidedly better defensive as well as offensive football, Cloquet trounced Aitkin 28-0. Not once did the Aitkin eleven have the ball inside of Cloquet's 20 yard line. Isaacson and Ahiers each scored two touchdowns. Our home- coming game was played with Denfeld which was out to revenge the tie Cloquet gave them the year before, And revenge it was, for the final score was 42-0. This was not as bad as it looks, for Denfeld had one of the top ranking teams in the State. lsaacson was lost for the remainder of the season because of an injury and was greatly missed for the rest of the games. Next came Two Harbors. Two Harbors had a 20-0 lead in the game before Cloquet got going, then the Lumberjacks made two touchdowns and it looked as though there was still a chance. Twice Cloquet came inside of Two Harbor's ten yard line and twice the ball was taken away. Cloquet was still on the offensive when the ball game ended 20-15. It was one of the most evenly matched games of the year. Cloquet traveled to Superior for their last game without two regulars, Isaacson and Tomchak. Fuller and Larson were lost early in the game because of injuries. Superior East slowly wore Cloquet down, and when the final gun sounded the the score was 53-20. Veterans returning were: Captain William Ahiers, Franklin Neva, lack Crotty, Roland Mattson, Buck Bloomquist, and Gordon Asplund. In the first game Cloquet scored a stunning upset over a team of Denfeld veterans by dumping them, 29-26. The boys displayed good teamwork and the scoring honors were fairly even. Superior Cathedral took the next, 25-19. ln one of those few games that Cloquet was off, Proctor tripped them up, 18-14. Three teams of the Polar league came next. Cloquet beat allg Thomson, 22-193 Wrenshall, 25-20, Cromwell, 26-17. Carlton took Cloquet in an overtime period, 51-29, but the Lumberjacks spoiled Duluth Centra1's homecoming by defeating them, 59-56. Ahiers scored fourteen points as Cloquet trounced Morgan Park, 55-16. Cloquet revenged a previous defeat in beating Proctor, 50-17. Rallying in the last minutes to overcome a five point lead, Cloquet beat Superior East 26-22. When Duluth Central came to Cloquet to avenge their defeat at homecom- ing, they were successful beyond their wildest dreams. Every shot seemed to be pulled into the basket by a magnetic force. When the smoke cleared the score was, 41-21. Two Harbors won next, 57-55. Cloquet drubbed Carlton, 58-25. Cloquet also won the next game from Morgan Park, 26-22. Superior Central was beaten 57-27 in a hard contest. Superior East High beat the boys in a thriller 40-58. In the best game of the year, Cloquet trimmed Two Harbors, 25-24. Ahiers snapped a basket with only fifteen seconds of playing time, cinching a second place tie for Cloquet in the Little Big Ten . Denfeld closed C1oquet's season by edging them out in an overtime heartbreaker, 56-54. Cloquet played Carlton in the first round of the tournament. They had a fairly easy time the first half and led 20-14. The Mclntire brothers put on a last half scoring splurge and Carlton gave Cloquet a real test as the score testifies, 50-28. It seems as though Central is a jinx to Cloquet because the boys were beaten again in the tournament. Central started with a bang, garnering 14 points before Cloquet made a basket. Then they settled down but to no avail for Central kept their pace. The score at the half was, 25-10, the third quarter, 54-20 and although Cloquet outscored Central 2 to 1 in the final period, the game ended, 58-28. Upper Picture: XV. Ahiers, F. Neva, G. But up I get, for up I must, There's much to do. I eat my crust Of bread, my dish of grapenuts, too, For, as I said, there's much to do. The hike to school is sort o' fun But over soon and, when that's done, I'm buried alive in books and rules As is the case in all our schools. The morning swiftly rushes through. I'm teaching children, yes, that's true, Arid, as each class completes its task, Where is the time gone? then I ask. The noon hour's here. O, deary mel The hour for lunch is here, I see. I eat my sandwich, gulp it down. Then in the halls I stand and frown. The proper way to check each dear Who's tempted now to linger here. The bell! Hurrayl But why rejoice? We really haven't got much choice. It's back to home rooms to begin, And there compete with noise and din. But afternoons do wear away And patience, too, though it's s'posed to stay. At four we're free, but no--, not sol Then certain ones to make up go, And we make up for much lost time, For which there's neither reason nor rhyme. But all things end in this mortal life. We're through at last with din and strife. We can go home and read and rest. Of course, we've done our level best. Delores M. - I think that travel broadens one. Mary M. - Candy will do the same things and it's cheaper. Betty L - Did you hear about the absent minded- professor who stamped his feet? Doris W. - What's so absented-minded about that? Alley-oop 5 Smart Girls Qi SlliltiStiCI DY il IQTU CBIISUI 'I-Eiblllifltlbl' Dear Ellen, This census tabulating is certainly a job, but now that the files are all made and everything's done, I'll have time to write to you about some of your high school classmates. Some of our friends have become famous since we last knew them. For instance, Gaius Sather is a United States senator from Nevada. That's not quite as good as it sounds, for, out of his ten thousand dollar salary, he spent nine thousand nine hundred and ninety dollars for campaign expenses. Agnes Swanson and Anna Swanson are living in Lincoln, Nebraska. They have gone in for raising pets and now have a total of seventeen--eight cats, four dogs, three canaries, one rabbit, and one parrot. Barbara Kennedy is still a famous actress and, according to the census report, remains as young as she was in 1940. They say Howard Borsheim may be a candidate for president on the Socialist ticket in 1972. Right at present he's doing pretty well as a lawyer in New York. Elrude Carlson has stuck to his music. He's playing in an orchestra and people come for miles to hear him perform on the squeaka , a new musical instrument. Betty Lou Darr is also in public life. She is the Executive Secretary of the VVCTU and is well known as a lecturer. Francis Lisignoli works in the Ready'-to-Wear department of The Big Duluth and Paul Torvid is operating a newspaper in competition with his former bosses. Raymond Strand is in the East where he is chief usher in one of Philadelphia's largest theatres. Clarice Mudge is the commander-in-chief of the U. S. Army. Her husband has the title, but she's the commander. Anitamae Oldeen's song hit Love song blues is still paying royalties to her. Everywhere you go, you hear it being sung. Evelyn Anderson has a position as Secretary for Wallace Iohnson, the author, who at present is living in a New Orleans hotel which is under the management of Ilta Ketola and Saimie Kiiliala. Wallace always has a startling conclusion to his stories, so in imitation of him, I'll close with a little about Richard Kokkonen who invented a rocket and went to the moon last year. We had no news until a week ago, but late radio bulletins tell us that he is now on Saturn with no fuel for his ship, and it may be ten years before he can make enough to return to the earth. The newspapers have been full ofarticles about him, and lane Tuomi, one of New York's leading columnists has begun a series of articles on his life. So many of the girls have become happy housewives, I can't list them all, but I noticed that Iane Cox's daughter is in the year's crop of debutantes and they say Mary Iune Forseth's daughter is just as much of a belle as her mother. Time certainly flies, doesn't it? As ever, lean Akre Census Tabulator 25,758 There was a guy named Walter Maki Whom some people said was all wacky. But they were all wrong For he'd play a song And he'd do it up brown, too, by cracky. A DLAYLET IN ONE ACT ENTITLED BEHIND BARRED DOORS WHAT 'S GOING OJN IN ROOM 322? The scene is laid in a room on the third floor of a large three story building. The time is seven thirty, and there is light streaming out from under the door of room 522. A stealthy figure slinks up the stairs and raps mysteriously on the door. The door slowly swings open. DOORMAN: The password, quick. FIGURE: Old Bachelor's Club - - - O. B. C. for short. DOORMAN: Okay - - Come on in, we're just starting. The figure is admitted, we follow after him and find ourselves in a small room with about twenty toughs. One who seems to be the leader, is pounding on a table in the front of the room. The Hgures rise to attention. LEADER: Repeat the oath. ALL: The purpose of the Old Bachelor's Club is to create and maintain throughout the city a high standard of bachelory and hermitage. LEADER: Okay, sit down. Now I called this meeting, because something serious has happened to one of our members. lst Bachelor: tnudging another beside himj It's Howie Tomchak, he's talking about. He's a problem. LEADER: Brother Tomchak was seen by one of our spies winking at a girl on the street yesterday. This outrage must be punished. Tomchak, what have you to say in defense? TOMCHAK: Aw, Bill - I'm innocent. Anyway a guy ain't human if he don't appreciate the finer things in life. LEADER: I agree, but women don't come under that list. As punishment you must have your beard shaven so the girls will see you for what you really are. All in favor say, aye. ALL: Ayel LEADER: Good, that's settled. Now then, I've heard that certain girls are leading members of our club away from our noble principles of bachelory. I'm appointing a special committee to spy on their houses and report who the guilty ones are that are desecrating this club. We'll clean this town up yet if it takes us all year. Those on the committee are Robert Lessor, Glenn Swain, Pete Vibert and Neil Ienkins. All of you are firm believers in the cause, and I can trust you. I now have the pleasure to announce that we have a new member tonight - - Ioe Pastika. Ioe - - tell the boys why you've joined our ranks. PASTIRA: Well, it all started when I took my girl to the movies. When the usher saw us he said, Well, well, who's the sucker tonight, Maisie? And I says, NVhat do you mean, brother? And he says, Every time she comes here she has a different one on her arm. So I got rid of her in a hurry. I've come to the conclusion that the only way to avoid trouble with girls is to stay away from them. LEADER: Spoken like a true bachelor. Ca rap on the doorj See who's there, Brother Roe. He opens the door. A girl is seen in the doorway. GIRL: There are some girls outside who would like to know if you boys want to go riding. There are enough cars for everybody. BOYS! Gangwayl Lead me to 'em. My mother told me this would happen, Wlowl One side, small change. The room is emptied in a few seconds. The leader remains. He is speaking to himself. LEADER: Oh well, I'm glad they've gone. I had a date with Shirley, anyway. .. -- fu ,hw ,.A',, '41, , K ,f 1 ,f -sv--4 .W .7-NKQQ.
