I sat on the end of the bench, almost asleep, during our Final State Tournament gamet All of a sudden, the coach said, Bill, put on a helmet and pick up a bat, you're going to bat for IVIike. I hustled out and tripped over the dugout steps flying about ten feet. I got up to the bat- ter's box and tried to regain the poise I once had. But my heart was beating so loudly I couIdn't hear myself think. I eyed the situation, bases loaded, two outs and the score tied, Before I got my stuff completely together, the pitcher fired a blazing strike. I watched it go by. The coach on third gave me the take sign. I took the next two pitches for balls. I fouled the next pitch, and that evened the count, 2 and 2 I stepped out of the box, grabbed some sand, spit on my hands, making a complete mess, and then choked up on the bat. I had a feeling the next pitch would be a changeup, and it was. I connected for a double and drove in the winning runs. baseball 55
