Class History On the morning of September 7. 1948, seventy-four bold but oh-so-innocent freshmen entered the doors of dear old C. S. V. T. S. For us this proved to be the beginning of a joyous and fruitful high school career. On this very day we started overrunning the halls, producing much noise unnecessarily and annoying the faculty. But we rapidly became a part of the school and began making more acceptable contributions to its activities. The fall of 1949 found us returning as sophomores. 62 in number and again taking part in school life. During this year we were filled with sorrow at the accidental death of one of our classmates. Donald Gresham. We were really proud of ourselves when we gave a tea honoring the Seniors and their parents on the campus in front of the Home Economics cottage. On September 4. 1950. we enrolled 56 easy-going, fun-loving members carrying the title Juniors. With this came some real work, for in our previous years, we had worked little and bragged a lot. We chose Freeda Baker as our candidate for Fair Queen and with the support of her class she was promptly elected. Our Junior play. Take Your Medicine , drew a record crowd and was ac- claimed by many as the best play ever produced by a class at C. S. V. T. S. Perhaps the large crowd was due to the fact that the play was postponed three times before it was finally given. Our other play, Drums of Death , was also successfully produced. We were hosts to the Seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet given May 1, with May Day as our theme; The last six weeks of school the Junior staff was given the responsibility of turning out the Hillbilly. One of the most exciting days of the year came the day we selected our class rings. Entering on September 10, 1951, 47 sophisticated Seniors were greeted with the news that their class rings had arrived. Again in the Fair Queen contest, our candidate. Jo Etta Gordon, was chosen queen. Also. Jean Parks was elected Homecoming Queen. For our Senior play, we selected Funny Face , and with the help of our sponsor, Mrs. E. C. Vacin, it was made into an outstanding production. On December 20. we sponsored a Christmas dance for the students, alumni, and faculty. Of course, everyone was excited when we ordered our caps and gowns, invitations and cards, for this meant that commencement was right around the corner. For our class trip we took an educational tour through our own state. When averages were figured it was found that Patricia Griffith and Christina Payne had tied for valedictorian. It was the first time in the history of the school that this had occurred. Barbara Linn was selected salutatorian, and Doyle Ward was chosen Davenport Award winner. The climax of our lives in high school came on May 19. when 47 excited, happy, and perhaps a little sad Seniors received their diplomas. i Page 8
