The Fiftieth Anniversary S Q I Of Clinton if x X N lb REf ' M ?E if wx, NWN Zan Clinton's history began when Charles Clinton, who was born in Georgia in 1847, first came to Indian Territory as a cowboy driving cattle on the Chisholm Trail. In 1872, while in Texas, he met and married Miss Louise Atkins, a Creek citizen and teacher. After the birth of their first child the family moved to Oklahoma. I The government was allotting land in Red Fork to the Indians. Louise Clinton being a Creek, was given a claim of land and in 1882 they built their home on the site where Clinton Junior High now stands. In 1884 Mrs. Clinton established the first church and school. Its location was between the present Clinton nd Red Fork. Her husband gave the land, materials and labor for construction of the frame building. The school - church served all denominations. In 1925, only eighteen years after Oklahoma's statehood, the first portion of the present Clinton School was built. It was designed to accommodate four hundred high school students. In 1938, Daniel Webster High School was built and Clinton became a junior high housing seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students west of the Arkansas River. In 1972, a new addition was added to Clinton, including sixteen new classrooms, a new band room, boys physical education gym and pool, and a new library. Now fifty years after the original school began, Clinton houses over eleven hundred students, some fifty teachers and administrators and is one of the largest junior highs in Tulsa.
