The major production of the vocal music department is the annual operetta performance under the direction of Ruth Nichols. This year's show was The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. Students participating in this color- ful event, gayly dressed in bright jap- anese costumes, captured and held the audience throughout the two-hour per- formance. Accompanists Linda Heerwald and Phyllis Puckett. Another valuable person was Mrs Irwin who helped in staging the oper- etta and in making up the Orientals. The Mikado is the story of a young man who returned to his home town to marry his sweetheart, Yum- yum, only to find she was engaged to Ko-ko. Katisha later appeared and claimed the young man as her lover. Ko-Ko was finally persuaded to marry Katisha and Yum-yum at last is free to marry Nanki-poo, her true love.
