The major production of the vocal music department is the annual operetta performance under the direction of Ruth Nichols. This year's show was The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. Students participating in this color- ful event, gayly dressed in bright jap- anese costumes, captured and held the audience throughout the two-hour per- formance. Helping make a successful perform- ance were Phyllis and Linda who did a wonderful job accompanying. .. .--9' ,-4-' ' Accompanists Linda Heerwald and Phyllis Puckett. Another valuable person was Mrs Irwin who helped in staging the oper- etta and in making up the Orientals. The Mikado is the story of a young man who returned to his home town to marry his sweetheart, Yum- yum, only to find she was engaged to Ko-ko. Katisha later appeared and claimed the young man as her lover. Ko-Ko was finally persuaded to marry Katisha and Yum-yum at last is free to marry Nanki-poo, her true love. Taking over a squad badly riddled by 1955 graduation was no easy assignment, but coaches Carl Allison, John Prock, and Frank Win number four came the following week when the Tornadoes crashed Frederick's Bombers 19-6. Victims of a revenge-seeking Altus crew, the Tornadoes were defeated a fourth time, 20-12. They came roaring back, how- ever, to win their final two games, 40- 7 over the Sayre Eagles, and crushing Hobart, 37-7. Bogert did just that, ending the season with a smooth operating unit . The first tussle at Woodward proved to be one of experience, with the Boom- ers emerging on the long end 26 to 7 . The initial home game saw Elk City tast- Checking fombau fi,1m' ing their first victory over the Torna- does in several years 21-20. A second half surge was not quite enough against the El Reno Indians as the Tornadoes suffered their third straight defeat 21 14. Then it came! The first win.
