It was held at Oua- chita Baptist University on June 5-11. Everyone was divided up into mock cities and held mock elections on city, county, and state levels. There were many guest speakers such as Governor David Pryor and Bill Clinton. Both girls felt they learned a great deal about the government and also made some lasting friend- ships. The Senior boy's basketball team finished the 1AA East double round robin schedule tied with Greenbrier and Vi- lonia for conference champions. The Jackets finished the conference season with a 10 and 4 record and 14-8 on the year. A brightener for the season was the fact that the boys won the County Tournament by beating Southside and then beating Scotland in the finals. The All-County team members were Lathan Jackson, David Williams, and Barry Gunn. The success the Jackets achieved was due to a complete and unselfish team effort. The team did not depend upon one or two players, but relied on contributions of all five players that were on the floor. This team effort was led by 8 graduating Seniors. Barry Gunn was the leading scorer for year with 244 points and a much improved defensive skill. Lathan Jackson was the leading re bounder for the second straight year, with 138, and second leading scorer with 238 points. David Williams was close behind Barry and Lathan with 233 points. David was the second leading re bounder with 124, he was able to rebound because of determination and not his height. Russ Anglin scored 198 points and had 114 rebounds. Russ played on the post or inside on offense and rebounded from a 5'9 frame. Be- cause he was giving up 4 to 6 in height to most of our opponents, he did an outstanding job. Dean Allen was our ' 'ball handler'' and point guard on offense. He set things in motion both on offense and defense. Dean was charac- terized by his quickness and hustle and scored 104 points for the year. Dennis Loven was the perfect 6th man for Yellowjackets. Although he started in some games, he was most valuable coming off the bench to give the team a scoring and rebounding spark. Dennis scored 115 points and had 92 rebounds. Randy Smith and Jerry Owens were valuable members of this Senior group. Although they saw limited action, their contributions to the team was as great as any other Yellowjacket. There were seven Juniors and Sophomores on the team that will be the Yellowjackets to depend on in the 1979 season. Juniors: Ronnie Isom, Bryan Fancher, Mike Autry, and Rodney Smith contributed throughout the season and will be relied upon heavily next season. Sophomores were Tracy Ward, Kenny Wilson and Chris Johnson. These three showed great improvement during the year and should have a bright future as Yellowjacket basketball players. The Senior Girls finished the season with seven wins and fourteen losses. I do not feel the record is a very good indication of the kind of ball the team played. It was a season in which the girls couldn't seem to get a break. Eight of the fourteen losses came by a margin of four points or less. The Jackets started the season by winning four out of their first five games, the only defeat being Mountain Home by one point. In the County Tournament the Jackets lost to Shirley by one point 44-43 on a shot with eight seconds remaining in the game. In the first round of the district tournament we played Marshall and the girls put together a super effort and won the game 58-44. The girls played hard in the second game but lost to the district champion, Vilonia. Liz Bramlett and Darcy Wells were both named to the All-Conference and All-County teams. Liz (Jr.) made it as a forward and Darcy (Sr.) made it as a guard. Seniors on the team were forwards: Jan George, Memory Rodgers, and Diane Williams, Guards: Janice Stagg and Darcy Wells. These Seniors were all good ball players and will be greatly missed next season. This team lost several close ballgames and faced a great deal of adversity, but showed a lot of character and pride and most of all never quit. The new region record was set by Tom Drew at Bald Knob, with a 10:32:1 in the 2 mile and then went on to the state meet at Russellville. Lathan Jackson received the district high point trophy by win- ning the 100 yd. dash in a record time of 10.4 second, he won the 220, long jump and anchored the 440 and 880 relays. He preceeded on to a 5th place finish at the state meet in the long jump. The 880 relay was the district champs with Jackson, Donald McKellep, Dennis Loven and Mark Hunt. Rod Smith turned in fine perfonnances in the half mile all year by winning every district race but one. Kenny Dunham also ran some fine races in the 880 and 2 mile. Randy Smith and Dennis Loven ran some good 440 races against strong compeition. Competing and do- ing well in the field events were Isaac Keeling and Mark Harris in the shot and discus. Russell Anglin in the shot. Barry Gunn and Dale Smith in the high jump. Mark Hunt, Lathan Jackson and Jeff Williams in the long jump and finishing 2nd in the District pole vault was Dean Allen. The 1978 Track team is looking forward to the completion of their track and with people returning to compete and help coming from the Jr. High there is a bright future for the CHS track program. 7th grade track-Bottom row: Jody Henderson, Scott Hink, JimBramlett, Charles Koening, Luke Cowsert, Dan Mahan, John Kirk, Kent Tester, Jay Donahue, Dusty Parish, Malcolm Cambron, Dewayne Bradley Jay Donahue, 7th grade won the 100 yd. dash in 11.4 seconds, a new 7th grade district record.
