Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1977 volume:

WHEN WE LOOKED AHEAD MANY YEARS AGO AT THE DAYS WE THOUGHT WOULD GO SO SLOW WE NEVER THOUGHT SCHOOL WOULD EVER END, BUT THE TIME IS COMING CLOSER FRIEND; THE MOMENTS AND SECRETS THAT WE SHARED THE SPECIAL FRIENDS WHO ALWAYS CARED THE TIMES WHEN THINGS DIDN'T GO OUR WAY WAS ALL PART OF LIFE WE NOW CAN SAY. UP AHEAD WILL BE MORE MEMORABLE DAYS AS ALL OF US GO OUR SEPARATE WAYS WE'LL MEET NEW FRIENDS BUT KEEP THE OLD AND BEGIN A NEW LIFE WE'LL TRY TO MOLD. DEDICATION JEFF SMITH When troubles come, the best of us So very often find It's hard to fight the loneliness And keep our peace of mind . . . The skies that once looked bright and blue All seem a cloudy gray- That wondrous thing called happiness Sprouts wings and flies away . . . The little joys that pleased us so Are pleasing us no more, We feel that nothing specially nice Could knock at our front door . . . If only we would look around, For then we'd surely see That others wish to understand And offer sympathy . . . Why, every suffering we endure Has many counterparts For sadness plays no favorites- It troubles many hearts- And only through our deep resolve To comfort one another Will we be given strength and hope From one day to the other . . . So when it seems some special trial Is very hard to bear Let's find a ray of sunshine By remembering-others care! Our defense kept stopping Dover all night, and the game ended in a 19-0 victory for Clinton. Dean Allen is open for a catch as the ball floats his way against Yellville. CLINTON FANS REALLY MEAN IT WHEN THEY DID THE CHEER: PROUD TO BE A JACKET! The mighty Yellowjackets fought to a 8-1-1 regular season and a tri-championship in District 12A. The team started off right by defeating Oak Grove for the first time. After coasting by Dover 19-0, they fought aggressive Bald Knob to a 7-7 tie. After beat- ing Marshall, 36-6, the Jackets hit the emotional game against rival Heber. We lost 13-0, and knew that we had to win the rest of our games to get a shot at the playoffs. They came back strong, defeating Vilonia 41-0, Yellville, 34-0, then took a long road trip to meet a supposedly tough Salem team, which the Jackets beat, 49-0. They were then prepared for their showdown with the leading Greenbriar Panthers. With tough practices all week and lots of enthusiasm, the Jackets went to a cold, muddy field to defeat the Panthers 13-6. They then took a Homecoming victory, 34-6. Clinton took their first trip to the State Playoffs as they went to Booneville. The Bear Cats defeated us 35-18 in a gallant fight by the Jackets. The Jacket defense earned the name The Wild Bunch , and they allowed only 38 points in regular season. The Wild Bunch consisted of linemen Jim Eoff, Lathan Jackson, Isaac Keeling, Randy Smith, Tracy Moore, linebackers Melvin Emerson and David Hogue, monster Russell Anglin, and backs Jeff Wil- liams, Stan Smith, and Dean Allen. An explosive offense managed to score 241 points by the strong blocking of Steve Nunley, David Hogue, Tracy Moore, Isaac Keeling, and Randy Smith, great blocking by fullback Donald McKellep and slotback Melvin Emerson. Behind this blocking, Russell Anglin was able to rush for 1300 yards and score 130 points. The blocking plus fine receivers like Dean Allen, Dennis Loven, and Mark Cowsert allowed Jeff Williams to pass for over 1000 yards, and 10 touchdowns. Mark Hunt added a good kicking game to the Jackets offense. The fans at Clinton followed their team, and were proud to be part of one of the best football teams ever to come from this area. Dennis Loven makes a fine reception against Bald Knob, which ended in a 7-7 tie. 13 Sr. Homecoming 14 Janet Johnson, Sr. Maid, was escorted by Mark Cowsert. Roxane Keeling, Sr. Maid, was escorted by Jeff Williams. Debbie Hall, Jr. Maid, was es- corted by Melvin Emerson. Janice Stagg, Jr. Maid was es- corted by David Hogue. Kim Williams, Soph. Maid, was escorted by Stanley Smith. Cindy Trawick, Soph. The 1976-77 basketball Yellowjackets could best be described as dedicated and hardworking. They were dedicated to improving the basketball program in order to have a winning season. They were willing to work hard to achieve this goal. Most individual goals were achieved; to win 15 or more regular season games, to bring the county championship back to CHS, and to gain the respect of other District 12A teams. This team served notice that they would not be the ' 'door mats'' of opposing teams. Leadership is a necessary ingredient for any successful season. We were fortunate to have three fine senior leaders in Jeff Williams, Doug Jones, and Stan Smith. Jeff was our floor leader and captain and all three will be missed next year. Junior players included Lathan Jackson, Barry Gunn, David Williams, Russell Anglin, Dennis Loven, Randy Smith, Dean Allen, and Jerry Owens. Lathan, at only 6'0 , was our leading scorer and rebounder, and played like 6'4 . Barry was our second leading scorer and has ability to be a leader in other areas. David was able to succeed by using determination, desire, and hard work. Russell, the shortest post man in the district, but no one ever told him, he played like one of the tallest. Dennis had big games for us coming off the bench and he has a big future. Randy, Dean, and Jerry, saw mostly B game action but their desire made the other players work harder. A playerGs sophomore year should be a learning year although some saw considerable game action. Yellowjackets with a future includes: Jeff Davis, Ronnie Isom, Ricky Russell, Brian Fancher, and Mike Autry. Jeff was our second leading rebounder and one of our leading scorers. Ronnie, Ricky, Brian, and Mike formed the nucleur of a successful ' 'B'' team and will be back for two more years of Yellowjacket basketball. The 1976-77 season was the most enjoyable season I have experienced as a coach. This was due to the character of the players. This group tried to do everything I asked of them and would not quit, even when things were not going as we planned. I was proud to be a YELLOWJACKET! 16 Jerry Owens Junior Randy Smith Junior David Williams Junior Jeff Davis Sophomore 17 Mike Autry Sophomore OPPONENT US THEM Yell ville B 39 40 Vilonia 42 53 Shirley 52 57 Leslie 61 43 Southside 11B 52 62 Yellville B 45 42 Yellville 46 63 Heber Springs 66 49 Shirley 55 51 Mt. GIRLS The members of the Senior Girls Basketball team were Bottom Row: Kim Williams, Bonita Hunt, Jan George, Cindy Trawick, Memory Rodgers, Mary Bayer; Second Row: Jamie Sarringar, Gae Rodgers, Libby Kidd, Bridgett Williams, Karla Hensley, Cindy Hillyer, Alice Bramlett, Coach Williamson; Top Row: Teresa Henderson, Jan Bonds, Jony Jones, Diane Williams, Barb Knight, Darcy Wells, Liz Bramlett, Janice Stagg. They have been through a good season with 9-3 before the Christmas break and with a record of 15-8 with the District playoffs left to go. Our team is not big, but we have been hard hustling and a very determined group. Our offense is led by Bridgett Willians averaging 20 points a game and then Jan George averaging 13 points. Liz and Diane, Libby and Memory have added throughout the season to the offense with their blend of different talents such as Liz's quickness and a good eye for the basket; Diane's steady ball playing; and last but not least Libby and Memory with boy type jump shots have been strong, inside threats. The unsung heros many times is the defense. The defense is the backbone of our team. We have played it with many people. To put it on top, the crammers, Karla and Gae, who on the right night played like 6' giants. Then we look at our road runners; Darcy Wells, Janice Stagg, and Barb Knight, who can and will run right over the top of you, but nearly all year they have gone around instead and carried the ball up the court. With these people here you say what else do we need to play. Then we spring the trap and release beauty and the beasts, Alice Bramlett and Cindy Hillyer, whose motto is do or die. And that motto goes for the other players, Mary Bayer, Cindy Trawick, Teresa Henderson, Bonita Hunt, Kim Williams, Jony Jones; but watch out for little Mac McCormac, the Beast, who yells HUSTLE! They coasted to a 19-2 record behind good pitching, fine fielding, and strong consistent hitting. The Jack- ets opened their domination by winning the Tech tournament handily. The Jackets had only one close game in this tournament and won it by 3 runs. They peaked, and played their best ball of the year. The Jackets were unbeatable, as Sylvan Hills found out in the finals of the UALR tournament, as the Jackets de- feated them 16-6. They went on to win the district tournament without much problem. This made them the champs of District 1 North for the second con- secutive year, and they once again went to the State Tournament. The Jackets won two close games over Des Arc and Sylvan Hills. At this point, everyone had Clinton as the favorite, as they should have been. A bad day, with errors and a slump in hitting paved the way for Texarkana to beat the Jackets in the semifinals. A Clinton baseball team has never been this far, and fans were proud of the team. The Jacket pitching staff compiled an ERA of 1.50, and the powerful hitting club ended the season with a team batting average of . 325. This had 15 home runs, and a total of 180 runs, and allowed only 83. The boys who made A11-District were David Hogue, Melvin Emerson, Clint West, Dickie Maas, and Junior McGhee. HIGH TRACK The 1976 Track team consisted of: Top Row: Steve Autry, Randy Smith, Stanley Smith, Isaac Keeling, Jim Bob Ward; Second Row: Lathan Jackson, Dennis Loven, Mark Harris; Third Row: Rodney Jackson, Donald McKellep, Tom Drew, Mark Hunt. Not pictured were Jeff Williams, Dennis McKellep, Russell Anglin, and Chuck Tester. 27 TRACK In 1976, the Sr. Track team was very productive. They won more ribbons, more trophies, placed higher in the district and regional track meets and sent more people to the state meet than in any other year. Leading the teams race for ribbons were sprinters Chuck Tester, Lathan Jackson, distance runners Stanley Smith and Tom Drew, and a tough mile relay team of Randy Smith, Donald McKellep, Dennis Loven, and Russell Anglin. Good perform- ances were also turned in by Randy Smith in the 440, Drew in the 2 mile, Mark Hunt in the long jump, and Dennis McKellep in the shot put. A big surprise this year was the performance of the sprint relays-an area where Clinton is traditionally weak. Running in the 440 relay was Tester, Dennis McK., L. Jackson, and Hunt. The 880 relay consisted of Tester, Jackson, McKellep, and Jeff Williams. Others on the team were Isaac Keeling, and Mark Harris in the discus, Jim Ward in the high jump and pole vault, and distance runners Rodney Jackson and Steve Autrey. At the Yellowjacket Relays at Mt. View the team placed second overall and brought home a string of ribbons. Later in the year the Yellowjackets placed third at the district meet at Heber Springs. The team did well, with Tester winning the 100 and 200 yd. dashes and Jackson placing high in the 100. Both the 440 and 880 relays did well, with the mile relay team of R. Smith, Donald McK., Dennis Loven, G S. Smith came in second. Ward placed 5th in the pole vault and high jump and Dennis McK. and Keeling came in 3rd and 4th respectively in the discus. McKellep also did well in the shot put. In the 440 yd. dash R. Smith came in 2nd and Loven 3rd while S. Smith came in 2nd in both the mile and 880 yd. run. Overall it was a good meet and Clinton showed alot of depth and ability. Two weeks later Clinton placed 8th in the Reg- ional meet at Bald Knob which included 3 other Districts. At this meet, the runners had to place 4th to qualify for the State Class A track meet. Those that qualified were Tester in the 100 and 220, Stan Smith in the mile and all three of the relay teams. At the State meet held at Arkadelphia, Tester and the relays ran well in the preliminaries but failed to qualify for the finals. Stan Smith came in 8th in the mile. All in all 1976 was a good year for Clinton Track and it looks as if ,,77 could be better! ! ! 28 SR. Words can't express our feelings. Each political session, evening vesper and group devotional gave us a broader insight of ourselves, God, and our country. We'll never forget the close friend- ships we made with counselors and girls in our own dorm and other girls we met in and between other dorms and meeting. BOYS STATE Stanley Smith-At Boys state we spent most of our time having fun playing basketball or tennis or just talking and getting to know each other. We also learned alot about our State government, its strong points and also its weaknesses. I guess you could say going to Boys State was an enjoyable learning experience. 40 CLINTON HIGH BAND The members are Front Row: Linda Rickard, Judith Conway, Beverly Ingram, Jennifer Kosmeder, Liz Maas, Second Row: Karen Smith, Becky Smith, Robert Dempsey, Lanny Bates, Kurt Huff, Daniel McGhee, Terry Weatherly, Renee Baker, Julie Henderson, Nancy Beavers, Connie Isom; Third Row: Tony Gifford, Joann Conway, Virginia Ingram, Diane McGhee, Mike Sikes, Danny Mahan, Kent Tester, Dusty Parish, Kevin Hall, Jimmy Carroll, Kip Stringer, Rene Elmer; Back Row: Randy Elliot, Kari Whisenhunt, Johnny Wooden Mike Scott. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him. ., Angelo Patri DARRYL HICKS JR. The Clinton Junior Jackets had 30 players this season. Even though they didn't win a game, they were a very disciplined and hustling team. A better year is predicted for next season, and the ninth graders who move up hope to get some experience on the Senior football team, and hopefully they will help the Senior Jackets. The Junior Jackets had a tough season, but there are higher hopes for next years team, and there were some bright spots this year. The Jr. Jackets got lots of support in the pep rallies from the fans and the cheerleaders. JUNIOR HOMECOMING The Junior Homecoming consisted of the Queen- Karen Smith, and her court. Ninth grade maids were Suzy Kirkendoll and Nona Lowry, eighth grade maids were Marla Bonds and Tami Overton, and seventh grade maids were Jill Dunn and Tanya Mackey. These Junior girls have a heart of a lion and the want to of ten thousand wild Indians (they have worked hard). This season has been hampered by not being fundamentally sound; but as the season worked on the Jr. girls got tougher and played teams close games such as Shirley, who beat us by 1 point, Marshall by 3, Leslie by 4, Southside by 1. All these were good games and if we could have won one or two of these close ones, 1 believe it could have turned our program around. 1 have loved working with these fine girls and will remember this year for many seasons to come. Offensive people were Debbie Dunham, Angie Wells, Shelley Johnson, Janet Bramlett, Marla Bonds, Delana Chalk, Jill Dunn; defensive people were Suzy Kirkendoll, Janet Bramlett, Tracy Nichols, Nona Lowry, Katie Stevens, Kathy Morris, Tami Overton, Teresa Allen and Julie Henderson. 1 love these Jr. Girls!
