Have you learned that there are forty- four terms to define in chapter eighteen; you can add equals to equals without changing the value of an equation; or maybe you learned the familiar old jjj-space-kkk-space” of Typing I. But is this all? 3 So book learning isn't your thing. You spent your time studying the down and out pattern, perfecting a step- two , or learning how to sleep in class without getting caught. But isn't there more to school than just studying or goofing off? 4 Think of all the different types of people you meet and get to know during your school days - funny people, smart peo- ple, serious people, and some that don’t fit into any other category but friends. 5 Friends - sometimes you can hardly stand them but then again you know you could never live without them. These are people that will always come to mind with fond memories as you look back on C.H.S. friendships 73-74. 6 For many this school year has been just another grade passed or failed for others it has been a year of ’’the very last time” for many high school experi- ences. For the Class of Seventy-four it has been days of happy memories, unity, looking back on yesterday - ahead to an unsure future. It has been a time of working together - perhaps for the very last time - because for the SENIORS, in more than one way, when a friend asks there is no tomorrow use today for helping. 7 SENIORS Class Seventy-four Doug Knight - President; Preston Dempsey - Vice-President; Lou Rushing - Secretary; Jolita Gunn - Treasurer; Deidre Tucker - Reporter. A time when you begin to look at things in a different light, think a little differ- ently, realize a true friend is forever a friend. And many times it is during this age these special friendships are made that will last for many years to come, as you re-live the memories. 15 JUNIORS Class Seventy-five Don Henderson President Karen Tester Secretary Ronnie Baker Vice-President Cheryl McCormac Treasurer Benton Allen Teresa Angling Ronnie Baker Gail Bennett Mark Bittle Keith Bonds Linda Bonds Sid Bonds David Cook Eddie Cowsert Mary Crownover Lora Cullum Marsha Davis Betty Deason Susan Elliot Eddie Emerson Sandra Eubanks Steve Ferguson Lois Freeman John Forsythe Jeff Gardner Kathy Hall Johnny Harris Debbie Hartsock 16 Jackie French Ronald Hamner Don Henderson Larry Hinchey Luke Holley Sharon Holley Marcia Jackson Geraldine James Vickie Jennings Claire Kidd Jo Nell Kirkendoll Marty Lefler Steve Lovell Cheryl McCormac Barry Mclllvain Steve McKnight Randal McMahan Henry Maulden Nancy Maulden Jim Mohr Nancy Morton 17 Gail Newman Danny Nunley Tommy Owen Glen Payne Rhonda Rhoda Mary Roberson Ronald Roberson Roy Roberson Gayle Scott Marie Shavor Mike Snowdon Malcolm Soles Monte Stithem Danny Story Mary Story Bill Teague Karen Tester Kathy Trujillo Billy Tomlinson Tim Trawick Mike Ward 18 Sophomores SEATED: Rita Newland, Reporter; Glen Lovell, Vice- President; STANDING: Denise McKellep, Secretary; Chuck Tester, Treasurer; Janet Moore, President is not pictured. The following week Debbie Scott, Dena Hall and Pam McCaslin went to Camp Rob- inson for a week at Girls’ State. Debbie expressed the feelings of all the girls when she said, ’’Regardless of the hot weather and having to wear our caps every- where we went, everyone had a great time at Girls’ State. We had several distinguished speakers including our Governor, Dale Bumpers. All of us got to go to the State Capital, meet a lot of new friends, learn a lot about government, and have the time of our life at Girls’ State in the summer of 1973.” Kenny said, ”1 didn’t know that you could learn so much in just one week. Running for offices, hearing our congressmen, meeting hundreds of new people - as the week came to a close I realized how much I learned and what a good time I’d had.” According to all it was GREAT. A real friend is one who helps us to think our noblest thoughts, put forth our best efforts, and to be our best selves. The leadership of these Seniors and the hustle and desire of the younger players made the season a successful one. The defense was a bright spot most of the year; of the 5 games won, four were shut-outs. Curt Tatum, who was the backbone of the offense, gained 1158 yds. rushing and made All-Dis- trict. Others on District 5-A's dream team were: Seniors - Jackie Evans and Bobby Watson and Junior Don Henderson. This bunch of boys have worked hard and have never given up. We have played up and down all year. To be good, a team has to be consistent and this is something that we are trying to achieve. Our Seniors have provided us with good lead- ership and have been the hustlers in practice. As it looks to me right now Clinton is on its way back in bas- ketball. I truly believe that the Seniors will finish with a winning record and they deserve to because they have been a good bunch of people to work with. We'll miss the seniors next year but I believe Clinton basketball is on the road back up. 46 LEFT TO RIGHT: Cheryl McCormac, Marsha Davis, Marie Shaver, Mary Story, Claire Kidd, Jo Beth Williams, Sandy Beavers, Coach Bailey, Rita Newland, Diane Ward, Vickie Jennings, Deidre Tucker, Linda Bonds, Debbie Scott, and Latricia Bradford. 1973-74 Clinton Yellowjackets 48 SCORES They Us Guy Perkins 44 30 Mt. What the young team lacked in experience the girls make up for in hustle as they worked hard every game of the season. Coach Bailey worked with the team for the first time and was well liked by the girls. With only three seniors graduating the team should look forward to an even better season next year. The Senior girls participated in the Tech Tournament at Russellville as well as the County Tournament. The first week in Febru- ary the team traveled to Arkadelphia where they played in the District play-offs held at Ouachita High School. 49 A crowd is not a company and faces are but a gallery of pictures, nothing can com- pare with the comfort of not just people but a group of friends. And we have become even closer friends as we worked together on projects and in meetings while learning more about what it means to be in an ORGANIZATION. 51 1973-74 Clinton Yellowjacket Band The Band members are: Dean Alien, Billy Author, Kenny Barnes, Jeff Beavers, Nancy Beavers, Kenny Beck, Jerald Bellinger, Linda Bonds, Jan Boone, Latri- cia Bradford, Randy Bradford, Jackie Bramlett, Betty Deason, Randy Elliot, Chip Ellis, Eric Ellis, Phillip Ellis, Jim Enis, Virgil Enis, Tony Gifford, Dena Hall, Teresa Henderson, Virginia Ingram, Connie Isom, Gary James, Greg McGhae, Nancy Morton, Steve Nun- ley, Jerry Owens, Tommy Owens, Peggy Rhoda, Mem- ory Rodgers, Stacey Sherwood, Cathy Smiley, Randy Smith, Rodney Smith, Stanley Smith, Freida Story, Steve Smith, Troy Walls, Diane Ward, Hall Ward, Darcie Wells, Marie Wilson. 52 The 1973-74 forty-five member Yellow- jacket Band under the direction of Mr. Dell Holt again gave its support to the football team by playing during the games. They provided entertainment during half-times and had a special show at Homecoming. The Band had two concerts this year. The first was on December 17 when the band gave a Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert was in April. In the last of March the band attended the District 7 Annual Band Festival. Pictured above is the Band Council which is comprised of Randy Smith, Steve Smith, Tommy Owens, Stanley Smith, and Philip Ellis as they are shown from left to right. Left are the Band officers; Nancy Morton, Vice-President; Kenny Barnes, President; and Latricia Bradford, Secretary. Above are the 73-74 majorettes as they appeared on the night of Homecoming. They are from left to right: Diane Ward, Dena Hall, Freida Story, Nancy Morton, and Memory Rodgers. Freida Story was elected Band Sweetheart. The Grade School plays at the Christmas Concert. Six twirlers from Clinton attended a twirling clinic at Arkansas State University last summer. They were Memory Rodgers, Nancy Morton, Freida Story, Jackie Bramlett, Dena Hall, and Diane Ward. During the week and a half camp the girls learned new twirl series and studied smiting or marching in the evening. Classes in jazz and dance twirl were also offered. The camp was climaxed on the last night by a show which included routines by all the classes. 55 1973-74 High School Chorus This year the twenty-two member High School Chorus, led by Dell Holt, gave two per- formances. The first was a Christmas Concert given on December 17 along with the High School Band. The second concert came in the spring and on both occasions the Chorus was accompanied by Mary Crownover at the piano. The Chorus this year consisted of many younger members. Because there are few grad- uating members the Chorus should remain strong next year. This year's singing group is building for the future as well as enjoying today. The 1973-74 Student Council was once again in charge of the student center located in the basement, each member taking turns in sets of twos to maintain the center and machines. In November the Student Council conducted its first book drive and were richly rewarded with over 1800 books donated to the school libraries. The Student Council is operated by students at CHS and sponsored by Mr. Barnes. This year’s officers were: President - Bobby Watson Vice-President - Billy Tomlinson Secretary - Deidre Tucker Each class has two representatives, chosen by the class, and the President of each class is also in the Council. This made a total of 18 members. Each year elections are held school wide to elect next year’s offi- cers. 1973-74 Student Council FRONT ROW: Deidre Tucker, Secretary; Bobby Watson, President; Billy Tomlinson, Vice-President; SECOND ROW: Libby Kidd, George Stephens, Doug Knight, Jeff Williams, Dana Lefler, Mr. Barnes; THIRD ROW: Don Henderson, Mark Cowsert, Johnny Mizell, Gaylon Eoff, Johnny Harris, Tommy Owens. We gathered 217 toys to contribute to the Toys for Tots” campaign in December. Gifts were brought for the elderly and we made bags for the teachers at our Christmas party. We also helped in the drive for Muscular Distrophy and ended the year with a spring outing and picnic. 58 Future Farmers of America Learning To Do Doing To Learn Earning To Live Living To Serve Under this motto the Clinton Chapter of the Future Farmers of America went to work to make the ”73-74” year the best ever. To lead them in their works they had Mr. Troy Walls as their advisor. Elected to help lead the ”73-74” Future Farm- ers were: Jim Whisenant - President, Eddie Emerson - Vice- President , Kelvin Smith - Secretary, Gary Henderson - Treasurer, Tony Emberton - Reporter, Boyd Jackson - Senti- nel, and Terry Kirkendoll - Jr. Advisor. As projects the Clinton Chapter of the F.F. A. has made several liquid feeders and feed-troughs this year. The Clinton Chapter also plans to attend judging trips at both BeeBee and Russellville. These new members along with the other mem- bers were led by club officers, Randy Williams - President; Dena Hall - Vice-President; Karen Tester - Secretary; Deidre Tucker - Reporter; and Gaylon Eoff - Parliamentarian. Clinton was host to the Beta Clubs of Southside, Westside, Quitman and Heber Springs at the Dis- trict meeting. Clinton came away with two Dis- trict Beta offices as Claire Kidd and Dana Lefler won the position of Vice-President and Secretary, respectively. As usual the Beta Club ran the concession stand at all home basketball games in return for the concessions at the annual Beta Basketball game. January 25 and 26 CHS was represented at the Arkansas Beta Convention in Little Rock. The Beta members stayed Friday and Saturday as they attended the convention held at Robinson Audito- rium. 60 Two Honor Students Named From the Class of’74 An honor student must maintain a 3.5 average or bet- ter. There were only two named this year. They were Kenny Barnes and Dena Hall who will be Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Both will address the audience at the graduation exercises in May. Kenny plans to attend State College of Arkansas next fall and Dena will con- tinue her education at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. 61 Stinger Staff This year marked record sales for the Stinger with six issues. The staff, led by Jan Eoff and Deidre Tucker, concentrated on quality instead of quantity. The newspaper staff was involved in an exchange program where they received other school’s efforts to inform and entertain their schools as they were sent copies of our Stinger. The staff worked hard this year keeping the school up to date on the latest news and we are sure next year's Stinger which will be headed by Kathy Hall, will be just as enjoyable. Members this year were: Jan Eoff - Editor; Dei dre Tucker - Assistant Editor; Kathy Hall - Jr. Editor; Lou Rushing, Linda Bonds, Marie Shaver, Marcia Jackson, Geraldine James, Mary Crown- over, Imogene White, Danny Nunley, James Scott, Janan Jackson, Susan Jackson and Mr. Hutto - Sponsor. 62 In the last week of July Pam McCaslin and Dena Hall attended a four day annual workshop at Oua- chita Baptist University in Arkadelphia where they learned new ideas for making a yearbook. The emphasis this year was on training the young staff so they will be prepared to work next year. Many hours of hard work went into this year’s Torch and the annual staff sincerely hopes you enjoy it. Members of the staff this year were: Seniors - Doug Knight, Preston Dempsey, Gaylon Eoff, Debbie Scott, Dena Hall and Pam McCaslin; Jun- iors - Eddie Emerson, Billy Tomlinson, Claire Kidd, Nancy Morton and Many Lefler; Sopho- mores - Dana Lefler and Roben Evans. There was only one other team able to match the raging Jackets was Greenbrier who tied them 8-8. The defense was truly a strong point as they held their opponents to only 16 points in 6 games. Their offense was no slouch either for which defense was stopping the opponents, the mighty Jackets marched on to get 84 points to once again win the Ozark Mountain Conference. 79 80 FRONT ROW: Melvin Emerson, Rocky Jones, Dean Allen, Barry Gunn, David Williams, Mike Strickland, Don- ald McKellep, Jeff Williams; SECOND ROW: Coach Franks, Randy Smith, Dennis Lovin, Stanley Smith, Tracy Moore, David Hogue, Doug Jones, Junior McGhee. This bunch of boys have really proven they are winners. Their best advantage right now is overall depth and good hustle. They never quit as long as there is time left on the clock. One of the biggest thrills for them was winning the County Tournament. They really peaked in the finals. The ninth graders have shown leadership and make up the nucleus of the team. With all the eighth graders this year and the seventh graders coming up we should have another successful team next year. 82 FRONT ROW: Lori Elmer, Cindy Hillyer, Memory Rodgers, Darcey Wells, Janice Stagg, Janan Jack- son, Diane Williams, Pasty Willoughby, Adrianne Bone, Joyce Knight, Tami Stripling; SECOND ROW: Coach Bailey, Jan George, Roxanne Keeling, Jan Bonds, Bridgett Williams, Anita Tucker, Karla Hensley, Libby Kidd, Jenny Evans, Gay Rogers, Susan Jackson, Ellen Ward, and Sonja Allen. They played a season in which they steadily improved and should have much success in the future. One of the highlights of the season was the sat- isfaction which came when they won the County Tournament held at Scotland. Seventh Grade Basketball Boys The Seventh Grade basketball boys were coached this year by Coaches Franks and Bailey. They received invaluable training as they got some expe- rience handling game situations as they prepared for Junior and Senior High ball. The Seventh Grade football team also did a very fine job this year. For the second time in a row the boys had what proved to be an almost perfect season. 85 The Seventh Grade girls team also did some preparing for future years. Coaches Franks and Bailey instructed the girls in the fundamentals of basketball. The girls were anxious to learn and should produce a winning team in future years. Seventh Grade Basketball Girls 86 Think of the importance of friendship in the education of men. These are people who help us as we grow and learn. They help us as they strive toward the purpose of education - not to teach students what to think but how to think. So we say thanks to these friends, the ADMINIS- TRATION. 87 Administration MR. Augustin Birrell This year - the past twelve years - have held for us a meaning which cannot be expressed in words. It is our hope that this yearbook may be a lasting memory of days, some good others not so great but none the less imponant days, spent here at C.H.S. with life's most treasured possessions - that of true friends. So if in later years you run across this book about friends and it makes you smile at some happy memories it will make all the time, effort, and worry of putting this annual together worthwhile.
