HOMER JONES As Mr. Jones marks his seventeenth year with the Clinton School System, we, the TORCH staff, wish to dedicate the 1966 TORCH to him. Here, Mr. Pate, the out-going superintendent, talks with Mr. Barnes, his suc- cessor, about board policies. ADMINISTRATION MR. BILLY RAY PATE Mr. Pate has served as superintendent of CHS since 1961. He resigned in December, 1965, to take a job with the Arkansas Department of Education. Mr. Pate received his B.S.E. degree from A.S.T.C. and his M.A. degree from the U. of A. and A.S.T.C. Mr. Pate had been with the Clinton School System since 1955, when he became Grade School Principal. MRS. MAXINE BARNES Mrs. Barnes attended Central College and A.S.T.C., where she received her B.S.E. degree. Before coming to Clinton, she taught at Center Ridge. Mrs. Barnes teaches ninth and tenth grade English and sponsors the Senior Class, Beta Club, and the Stinger. FACULTY MR. RONNIE CLARK Mr. Clark received his B.A. degree from A.S.T.C. He taught two years at Beebe before coming to Clinton. Mr. Clark teaches economics and American government. He is the head football coach and the assistant basketball coach. MR. CURTIS BARNES After Mr. Pate’s resignation, Mr. Barnes, who was the high school princi- pal, became acting-superintendent. He has been teaching at Clinton since 1954, before which he taught at Center Ridge. He received his B.S.E. and M.S.Ed. degrees from A.S.T.C. MRS. SUZANNE CLARK Mrs. Clark has attended Ouachita College and A.S.T.C. Before coming to Clinton, she taught one year at Jacksonville. Mrs. Clark is the study hall teacher, chorus teacher, and one of the TORCH sponsors. MRS. I LA HEFNER Mrs. Hefner has attended A.S.T.C, She taught at Witts Springs before coming to Clinton this year. Mrs. Hefner is the librarian, and she teaches world history. She is sponsor of the Library Club and the Torch. MR. W. H. MORTON Mr. Morton received his M. Ed. degree from the U. of A. He teaches agriculture and spon- sors the FFA and the Sophomore Class. Mr. Morton has helped with much of the high school office work since Mr. Barnes1 move to the position of acting- superintendent. CHS TEACHERS MANIFEST MRS. MAE HOLLOWAY Mrs. Holloway received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Harding College. She teaches eleventh and twelfth grade English and sponsors the Stinger and the Junior Class. She taught at Shirley for seven years before coming to Clinton. MR. LARRY NELSON Mr. Nelson has attended A.S.T.C. Before coming to Clinton, he taught at Marshall for two years. Mr. Nelson teaches geometry, general math, and seventh grade science. MR. RALPH HUTTO Mr. Hutto teaches Typing I and II, shorthand, and bookkeeping, and sponsors the Freshman Class and the Stinger. He has taught at Clinton for twelve years. Mr. Hutto received his B.S. degree from A.S.T.C. MRS. BETTY PATE Mrs. Pate received her B.S.E. from A.S.T.C. Before coming to Clinton in 1955, she taught at Searcy. She teaches home economics and sponsors the Sophomore Class, the FHA, the Senior Cheerleaders, and the Torch. She is also manager of the high school lunch room. 8 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING MR. JERRY ROSE Mr. Rose received his B.S.E. degree from A.S.T.C. He coached at Marked Tree two years before coming to Clinton this year. Mr. Rose is the head basketball coach and the assist- ant football coach. He also teaches American history. MR. LOYAL SMILEY Mr. Smiley attended A.S.T.C. and Arkansas Tech. He taught at Leslie before coming to Clinton in 1959. Mr. Smiley teaches physics, biology, and earth science. He also sponsors the Senior Class. MR. JIMMY SMITH Mr. Smith received his B.A. degree from Harding and his M. Ed. degree from the Uni- versity of Houston. He teaches Algebra I and n and trigonom- etry. He sponsors the Junior Class. Mrs. Smith is employed as the school secretary. She is a grad- uate of South Side High School. Mr. Taylor received his B.A. degree from Long Beach State College. He directed bands in the U.S. Navy and at Clarksville before coming to Clinton in 1961. Mr. Taylor directs the C.H.S. Band. C.H.S. teachers are always willing to help students learn and then put their knowledge to work. 9 VARIED CURRICULUM SCIENCE PREPARES STUDENTS COMMERCIAL These Home Economics II girls are learning to make practical, as well as pretty, Christmas gifts. Three years of home economics are offered for girls. Boys may take up to four years of instruction in agriculture. Mechanical drawing is also available to them. Students in speech class learn to listen attentively as well as to present effective talks. To insure students of a successful future, mastery of four years of English is required for a diploma from C.H.S. Physics class, shown here, alternates yearly with a chemistry class. Biology and earth science complete the range of science courses offered at C.H.S. These C.H.S. students are taking their first year of typing. Second-year typing is offered for those who wish continued instruction and practice. Other commercial courses available are shorthand and bookkeeping. ENGLISH VOCATIONAL FOR THEIR FUTURE RESPONSIBILITIES SOCIAL STUDIES MATHEMATICS This class in Algebra I is just one of five courses in mathe- matics offered at C.H.S. Others include basic math, geometry, Algebra n and trigonometry. Before the second bell rings, everybody talks to his neighbor. But after the bell, Mr. Rose takes over the discussion and the topic turns to American history. Besides this required subject, students may also take world history, economics, or American government. PHYSICAL EDUCATION MUSIC The senior girls' basketball team, shown here playing against Shirley, is only one of Clinton's various athletic teams. Basketball for boys and girls and football are open to students on the senior, junior, and peewee level. The band, shown here during its February assembly program, is an essential part of the music program. Chorus members displayed their talent in a very entertaining Christmas program. ORGANIZATIONS 37 STUDENT COUNCIL IS GOVERNING BODY Tommy Smith, vice president) Gary Hall, parliamentarian) Doris Klrkendoll, secretary; Gary Reed, president. The Student Council is the governing body of the campus. It works with the administra- tion to promote better student- teacher relationships. It is set up to regulate and co- ordinate student activities, such as class money-raising projects. The Council also draws up a calendar of sched- uled assembly programs at the beginning of each year, in which every class and or- ganization on campus is in- cluded. Each class is represented by two members whom they elect and their class presi- dent. The president and vice president of the Council are elected from the senior and junior classes by the entire student body for one year terms.
