AUTOGRAPHS Page 111 DEDICATION The TORCH Staff of Clinton High School proudly dedicates the 1963 TORCH to Mr. Loyal Smiley. He has been the head of our Science Department for the past five years and has earned the respect of all his students. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone seeking it. BILLY RAY PATE Mr. Pate received his B. S. E. degree from A rkansas State Teachers College and his M. A. degree from the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State Teachers'College. He taught at Searcy before coming to Clinton in 1955 as Grade School Principal. After holding this position for six years he became Superintendent in 1961. Mr. Pate also teaches a Geometry class. PRINCIPAL MR. CURTIS BARNES Mr. Barnes received his B. S.E. and his M. S. Ed. degrees from Arkansas State Teachers College. He taught at Center Ridge before coming to Clinton in 1954. In addition to his duties as Principal he teaches American History. Mr. Barnes is also sponsor of the Beta Club. Page 7 FACULTY MRS. MAXINE BARNES Mrs. Barnes has attended Central College and Arkansas State Teachers College where she received her B.S. E. degree. She taught at Center Ridge before coming to Clinton. Mrs. Barnes teaches English and is sponsor of the Freshman Class. MRS. BARBARA DEMPSEY Mrs. Dempsey graduated from Clinton State Vocational Training School in 1953. She is now employed as our school secretary. MRS. MAE HOLLOWAY Mrs. Holloway received her B. A. and M.A. degrees from Harding College. She taught at Shirley for seven years before coming to Clinton. Mrs. Holloway teaches English, World History, and is sponsor of the Senior Class. Page 8 MR. RALPH HUTTO Mr. Hutto received his B. S. degree from Arkansas State Teachers College. He has taught at Clinton for nine years. Mr. Hutto teaches Commercial Subjects and is sponsor of the Sophomore Class and The Stinger. MR. W. H. MORTON Mr. Morton received his M.Ed. degree from the University of Arkansas. He teaches Agriculture and sponsors the Student Council, FFA, and the Junior Class. MRS. BETTY PATE Mrs. Pate received her B.S. E. from Arkansas State Teachers College. She taught at Searcy before coming to Clinton in 1955. She teaches Home Economics and General Science. Mrs. Pate sponsors the Junior Class, FHA, and the Senior Cheerleaders. She is also manager of the High School lunch room. Page 9 MR. LOYAL SMILEY Mr. Smiley attended Arkansas State Teachers College and Arkansas Tech. He taught at Leslie before coming to Clinton in 1959. Mr. Smiley teaches Chemistry. Biology, General Science, and sponsors the Freshman Class. MR. MARSHALL TAYLOR Mr. Taylor received his B. A. degree from Long Beach State College. He directed bands in the U.S. Navy and at Clarksville before coming to Clinton in 1961. Mr. Taylor directs the C. H. S. Band and Chorus. MR. KENNETH STILL Mr. Still graduated from Harding College in 1960 with a B. S. degree. He teaches Algebra I and II, and Geometry. Page 10 MISS ELIZABETH WINNING HAM Miss Winningham received her B.S.E. from Arkansas State Teachers College. She taught at South Side before coming to Clinton in 1948. Miss Winningham is Librarian and teaches General Math. She is sponsor of the Senior Class and THE TORCH. MR. DON YOUNG Mr. Young received his B.S.E. degree from Arkansas State Teachers College. He coached at Fordyce before coming to Clinton in 1961. Mr. Young coaches all athletic teams and sponsors the Sophomore Class. There is always office work to be done by the faculty and the secretary. Marilyn’s grade point is 5. 67, and Donna's average is 5. 86. Sylvia McBryde Salutatorian Sylvia McBryde was selected as Salutatorian of the 1963 senior class with a grade point of 5.38. Alma Bellinger Betty Crocker Award The Betty Crocker Award is given each year to the senior girl who scored highest on a national test on home economics. Alma Bellinger is this year’s winner. SENIOR AWARDS Sandra Shannon B PW Club Award The Clinton B PW Club selected Sandra Shannon to receive its award as the out- standing senior girl of 1963, basing its choice on her church work, scholarship, activities, and citizenship. Darrell Oliger Lions Club Award The Clinton Lions Club chose Darrell Oliger as the recipient of its award as the outstand- ing sportsman of CHS. The award is based on sportsmanship, athletic ability, attend- ance, and attitude.
