Rines BUS DRIVERS R. Nelson G. Irish A Worthwhile Future” Our yearbook has at last been completed, and we, the Seniors, are very proud of it. The staff has worked hard and long, but we have enjoyed it. We, the Syllabus Staff, would like to express our thanks to the many people who have helped make it a success. We are grateful to Miss Coburn for all the assistance she has given us. If it had not been for her prodding us along, I doubt very much that this book would have been completed. We hope that all of you enjoy reading this book and that it may serve to remind you of the 1963-64 school year. We hope that as you look through the book in later years it will make you smile and recall the good ole days at Clinton High. Lynn Bickford Editor We, the graduating class of 1964, do not know what the future will bring us. We can only hope that it is going to be successful for each and everyone of us. Some will be going on to school or will be furthering their education. Why? Most of all because we want as much out of life as we can, and with our abilities there is a position in life for us. But we must hunt for that position. Others will be seeking jobs or getting married. They, too, have the ability but think that they would rather find employment now or get married. No mat- ter what we do though, it is going to be our own decision. No one else can tell us what to do with our lives; they can only advise us as to what they think will be more prosperous for each one of us. This would include our teachers, friends, and especially our parents. They want each of us individually to live a worthwhile and enjoyable life. One to which we will not be forced to worry and strive. As part of the graduating class, I want to say that I have had four wonderful years at C.H.S. Underclassmates, now is the time to start thinking of what you want your future to be. We must prepare our- selves for new responsibilities, new challenges and determination whether we want to plan our future or take life as it comes. I wish each and everyone of you the best of luck now and in the future years to come. I find more and more teenagers are reaching for and relying on me to elevate their ego, calm their nerves, and experiment with something adult and dif- ferent . My manufacturers are trying to disregard what has now been proven a fact. Tobacco can no longer be exculpated from the guilt of causing lung cancer and other serious disorders. Commercialization is a prime determinant of teen-age smoking. Even sports events are sponsored by tobacco companies. Lack of parental supervision may influence some early smok- ers. Every time one of these teenagers buy me, I would like to tell him how dangerous I am. I contain tars and nicotines which have even been suspected of impairing the mental faculties if the habit is established at an early age. I suggest that as a cure my ingredients be listed on each package and a program be insti- gated in the grades as well as at the high school level for acquainting the teen and teenagers with me. As much as I dislike admitting it, I am a habit which accomplishes nothing and harms much. by Pat Card A DAY OF REGRET The sun was bright, The snow was deep, One day when we climbed into Gary’s jeep. We fastened our skis onto the top. And between here and Sugarloaf did not once stop. It was Friday the 13th A day of school But we failed to heed Mr. Ward's solemn rule of trouble ahead for those skipping school. On the following monday. We were sort of scared When he asked for a note From mother or dad. We stuttered and stammered And said uh - well” Where we were last Friday, We cannot tell. As things turned out This wasn't an excuse So we were lined up With some terrible abuse We cleaned the floors, and scrubbed the walls. Then we helped the janitor Sweep the halls. Take our advice and don't try it twice You'll sure have fun. But you'll pay for it thrice. Maybe this school looks sort of small, But when you get through cleaning it You'll want to fall. by Walter Stinson FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Debra Weymouth Secretary Linda Page President Timothy Gerrow Vice-President Suzanne Willett Treasurer Stephen Weymouth Student Council Rebecca Dickey Student Council - . Remember when you were a freshman and the excitement it held Watching a Clinton basketball game, a spirit within you welled Maybe the games we won were few, But a memory still remains, Of the victories of spirit that only Clinton claimed. I see cheerleaders yell and praise mighty Clinton's name: Though years and years go by, It will never be the same; And now you are a sophomore, You've come back to it once more. To find another year of mystery in store. Finally you're a junior, so close, But yet so far, From your goal to be a senior And to reach that distant star. At this meeting we established our meeting day which was every other Friday. On November 15th and 16th, the Student Council attended a Student Council State Convention at Lawrence High School. At the convention we were given information on how to run our student council. We also received information on safety clubs. Our main goal this year has been to hinder the smoking which has been taking place in the building throughout the year. I am sure with a little enforcement it can be stop- ped. We are having an assembly on the subject and an award will be given for the best theme. We would like to show our appreciation to Mr. Ward for his guidance. BOWLING The high school started its annual bowling tournament in the spring of 1963. There were eight teams composed of juniors and seniors. Last year's winning team was the Busy Beavers composed of Kenneth Chase, cap- tain, Richard Poulin, Sharon Rush, and Cynthia Witham. The high boy scorer was Kenneth Chase and the high girl scorer was Maxine Hig- gins. This year we look forward with great anticipation to another year of competitive fun in bowling. FIELD DAY The Clinton Lions Annual Field Day of 1963 started on the evening of September 6, with a public dance where the coronation of the king and queen took place. The king was Richard Poulin with Dorothy Johnston as queen. Saturday, September 7, there was a gigantic parade featuring the Pine Tree Warrior's Drum and Bugle Corps of Lewiston, Hartland, and Lawrence High Bands. Beano was played at the grounds all day. Saturday evening there was a cowboy show featuring the Hal Lone Pine Moun- taineers. Also singing was Eleanor Giles. On Sunday, the last day of the events, a chicken barbecue was held from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. A horse show and oxen pulling were also held during the afternoon. The events ended showing a very successful Field Day. L. to R.: Richard Poulin, Dorothy Johnston, Lynn Bickford, Valerie Wyman, and Betty Patterson. i A THLETICS CROSS COUNTRY FRONT ROW: R. Dodge, W. Stinson. SECOND ROW: R. Hamm, A. Lyons, S. Booker, D. Ward. CROSS COUNTRY The Clinton Harrier team, coached by Mr. Campbell, began practice during the second week of September. Two Lettermen were back from past years, Walter Stinson and Russell Hamm. New members to the squad were Allen Lyons, Sherwood Booker, Denham Ward and Randy Dodge. The team ran against strong competitors from Unity-Freedom, Hinckley, Fairfield, Winthrop, Oakland and Searsport. The season came to a close with the running of the State Cross Country Meet at the University of Maine on October 31. Clinton placed three individuals in the meet, Russell Hamm, Allen Lyons, and Walter Stinson for Class S. If VARSITY FIRST ROW: D. Bradford, S. Booker, Coach Campbell, R. Bickford, V. Hartley. SECOND ROW: J. Coro, W. Stinson, L. Irish, R. Coro, R. Dodge. VARSITY During the first week of November, Coach Campbell sent out the call for all boys interested in playing basketball. Approximately twenty boys reported for the first prac- tice. Of these, ten were selected to play varsity, while the remaining players reported totheJ.V. Coach. Mr. Hope. Four lettermen returned from last year's squad. They were: Sherwood Booker, Les- lie Buzzell, and Walter Stinson representing the Senior Class; and John Coro, represent- ing the Junior Class. New members on the team were: David Bradford from the Senior Class; Russell Bickford, Lewis Irish, and Victor Hartley from the Junior Class; Robert Coro from the Sophomore Class; and Randy Dodge from the Freshman Class. It looked like a successful season as the Tigers won both games of the W.C.L. Round Robin held at Belgrade. As the season progressed, Clinton many times unable to put two good halves together, lost to such outstanding teams as Phillips, Besse, Brooks, and class L Erskine. We finished this season with a record of six wins and twelve losses. Although some of the scores were one-sided, the team's spirit was always present and everyone was in there fighting. The team would sincerely like to thank Mr. Campbell for his time, patience, and basketball knowledge that he has passed on to us during the season. By Allen Lyons BASKETBALL GAME ADVERTISERS CLINTON TEACHERS Clinton teachers are no one's fools In fact, we think they're pretty cool. Let us take a few examples, Then tell us what you think of Our samples. Let us start with Mr. Hope. He's not the kind to worry and mope. He has a convertible all shiny and white and when he is mad it doesn't take him long to get out of sight. Now let's go on to Mr. C He once got bitten by a bee. He teaches Biology, A, Though he doesn't get much pay. Let us turn to Mr. Mills Who starts each day with nerve pills. He teaches all the English classes, So only half of the school passes. Let us go on to Mr. Ward. He’s our master and lord. With the hammer and thong. He shoves us along. Let's turn to Miss Coburn. She really tries to make us learn. Her typing class is a cinch, But everyone passes in a pinch. Let's turn to Mrs. Libby. She is awfully nice to me, My next class is with her you see. She teaches me French, so, C'est la vie. by Sandra Willett Sponsored by LONG LEY STUDIOS Ina Mae and Russell Longley Schools - Weddings - Children Fine Commercial Photography Water ville - Skowhegan Maine COMPLIMENTS of the FEDERAL TRUST COMPANY A Friendly Institution Member: Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Waterville - Main Street and Elm Plaza Shopping Center Bingham - Skowhegan - Unity - Winslow WATERVILLE SAVINGS BANK Save for Your Future Member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Waterville Maine Mobilheat Mobil Kerosene PETERS GAS AND OIL SERVICE GEORGE McKENNEY Our Clinton Agent HA 6-3311 Tel.
