FACULTY SENIORS CLASSES ELEMENT ARY ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES advertisements EDITORIALS PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE All of us are looking forward to grad- uation. We are all saying that the days will hurry, the proms will come, the Syl- labus will soon arrive, and commence- ment is only around the corner. We seem to look only that far ahead, though. Do we really know what we want and are going to do after graduation? Most of us are still puzzled as to what we shall do. True, it takes much thought and con- sideration. Now that we think of it, we say to ourselves, Why didn’t I take a dif- ferent course? I wish that I had known what I was going to be when I was a freshman or a sophomore so that I could have prepared for it. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, now is the time to be preparing for your future. If there is any chance that you might want to further your edu- cation, choose the right subjects. Do it now and don’t be sorry later. This is our last year at C.H.S. and we have tried to think of new and interesting items which will catch and hold your attention. To each and every one of you, I wish the best of everything. THE CHALLENGE OF THE FUTURE I, as part of the graduating class of 1962, wish to say that we have had a very memorable four years at Clinton High School. There were times of doubts and falterings, but we continued to work, to- gether, toward our goal. Our next major achievement will be to undertake the privilege of voting, of hold- ing public office, or protecting our country. We will accept this new responsibility the way that we accepted the responsibility of our high school work. We will welcome the challenge that it presents to us. Through this challenge, we will endeavor to con- tribute our best to the society of our town, state, and nation. CAMILLA.BESSEY, Editor ROYCE HUNTER, Assistant Editor FRONT ROW: P. Whitten, S. Frost, E. Poulin. SECOND ROW: L. Tuttle, R. Sherburne, S. Page, D. Wood, R. Hunter, V. Rand, C. Nelson D. Libby, C. Bessey. THE TWIST The twist came out in '61 Everyone knew that it meant fun. Until a couple of kids got on the floor And did the twist like never before. Then Mr. Ward stepped in and said ’’That's enough! Where did you two ever learn to do that stuff?” The twist was banned the very next day, But we'll keep twisting anyway. We don't believe in breaking his rules, So we'll do our twisting after school! By: THE TWISTERS DEDICATION MR. THOMAS C. POOLER We, the class of 1962, respectfully dedicate our issue of the Syllabus to Mr. Thomas Pooler, for his patience and understanding in the past three years at Clinton High School. CROSS COUNTRY OF 1961-1962 This year nine men came out for cross country; five seniors - Larry Barrett, Russ Sherburne, Butch Witham, Royce Hunter, Dave Libby; three juniors - Bob Card, Sonny Scott, and Merle Hartley; and one sophomore - Walt Stinson. All of these were letter- men. Later in the season five freshmen came to help the team. They were Russell Hamm, Victor Hartley, Lewis Irish, Denham Ward, and John Coro. VARSIT y FIRST ROW: K. Chase, S. Scott, L. Barrett, W. Stinson. SECOND ROW: R. Hunt, B. Witham, R. Card, B. Witham, R. Hunter, Coach Pooler. VARSITY BASKETBALL OF 1961-1962 Coach Tom Pooler called the team to practice on October 18, 1961. The follow- ing were selected for varsity: seniors Royce Hunter, Butch and Bo Witham, and Laurence Barrett; juniors Robert Card, Robert Hunt, Sonny Scott, and Kenny Chase; also one sophomore Walter Stinson. The Tigers got away to a good start by winning both rounds of the Searsport Round Robin and by defeating Besse High of Albion in the first game of the regular season. As the season wore on, the Tigers ran into hard luck, losing several games by very slim margins. At the end of the regular season of play, the Tigers had 7 wins and 11 losses. In the Regionals, the Tigers defeated the fine Winterport squad 52-44. In the sec- ond Regional game the Searsport Vikings eliminated Clinton from tournament play by a comfortable margin, though not without a battle. Our most sincere thanks goes to Coach Tom Pooler for his time and guidance. s. Scott R. Hunter L. Barrett W. Stinson B. Witham K. Chase iRs B. Card B. Hunt B. JUNIOR VARSITY OF 1961-1962 The Junior Varsity was called to practice by Coach Campbell in mid October. Those who were selected for regular starters were: Johnny Coro, Lewis Irish, Harry Cram, Merle Hartley, Gary Sherburne, and David Bradford. The Junior Varsity got off to a poor start, losing their first three games in a row. Their first taste of victory came when they defeated the Winterport J. V. 's in a close game, 33-31. At the end of the season of play, the J.V. 's had a win-loss record of 6-12. Thanks and appreciation goes to Coach Campbell. CHEERLEADERS Prudy Gail LEFT to RIGHT: Cindy Witham. JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL OF 1961-1962 The basketball season of the Junior High Beavers started on December 1, 1961. There were fourteen boys trying out for the team. After the boys were selected they had practice twice a week, on Monday and Thursday. The boys had a fair season, but their lack of height was one of the biggest problems to overcome. Nevertheless, what the boys lacked in height, they made up for in spirit. They played games with the fol- lowing teams: Solon, Benton, Unity, and Pittsfield. Three of the outstanding players of the season were Bob Coro, Tim Fuller, and Levi Thibodeau. Bob Coro was the top scorer of the season, Levi Thibodeau had the most rebounds, and Tim Fuller was the outstanding playmaker. Bud Proctor as coach and Sonny Scott as assistant coach gave the boys a great deal of knowledge about the game of basketball. The league consisted of eight teams, one of which was composed of the faculty. Every Monday night we met at the Metro-Bowl Lanes in Waterville where we were greeted with kindness and courtesy by Mr. Little, the manager. The teams' season of play lasted for a total of seven weeks. Wayne Pelletier's Tigers won with the highest total score of the seven weeks of play. Trophies were given to those of the winning team and to those who bowled the highest single or the highest average score. We have formed another league this year which also includes the juniors. Mr. Ward is our faculty advisor. Besides its regular function of regulating student activities, the Student Council has sponsored a Safety Club. Its purpose is to promote safety among the teenagers. The Student Council has, also, participated in both the state and the area Student Council Conventions. FIELD DAY The festivities of the Clinton Lions Club Annual Field Day «'ere set into gear Fri- day evening, September 9, by a gala dance, which rose to a climax at the coronation of the king and queen. Saturday, the activity shifted into high gear. The day got off to a fast start with the procession of a giant mile long parade featuring numerous floats, the Lawrence High School Band, the Katahdin Rangers, the Fairfield Girls' Drill Team, new cars, prancing horses, and many other miscellaneous items. Our town was honored with the presence of Governor John H. Reed, who reviewed the parade, and who then was taken on a conducted tour of the fair grounds. A baked bean dinner was served at noon. The activities at the fair grounds were climaxed by the tremendous Katahdin Rangers of Millinocket. Fair ground activities lasted well into the evening hours. Sunday, there was a chicken barbecue which lasted until evening. The Sebasti- cook Riding Club and the Maine Horse Association charitably co-sponsored an after- noon horse show. Sunday evening festivities came to a close with a good profit shown. The many workers went home knowing that their jobs had been well done. GLEE CLUB FIRST ROW: P. Whitten, R. Tuttle, S. Frost, S.
