There are some who set their goal at the beginning and aim to keep it. Then there are others who always put things off until tomorrow. During the early high school years everyone looks up to those lucky sen- iors and wished it were their last year, too. It seems as though you yourself will never get that diploma. Finally comes that last year which we have looked for. A lot of people ask us what we will be doing after graduation. We stand speechless. Well, to tell the truth, we hadn't thought much about it. Then we start thinking about our future. Some of us get quite scared when we think about it, we wish now we’d done differently at the start. But now the future is upon us and we will meet the challenges with the training we have received. Sharon Salisbury, Editor fie Last ffours On the morning of June 8, 1961, you wake up and all of a sudden it hits you in the face that this is the day you have been waiting for, for twelve years. You had told everyone that you couldn't wait to graduate, but now the day has come and you're not in such a hurry to leave that old school house any more. You go to school and the teacher hands you your report card. The bell rings and just like every other day of the school year, you walk out of the school house with your classmates. Shouts of joy come from the freshmen, sophomores and juniors. You don't shout. Because you are regretful that you are leaving that so called jailhouse never to return. The time has come for Mr. Springer to shake your right hand while he places your diploma in your left hand. As you turn and walk back to your seat, all your classmates smile at you, but it's not a happy smile. It's more of a little push from each to keep you going. As Mr. Springer hands out the last few diplomas you feel as though you just can't stand to leave all these classmates. Suddenly, an inner voice says, This isn't the end, but only the beginning. Linda Welch, Assistant Editor PAGAN RITES The people shook with terror. The valley was filled with strife; For the Gods in mighty anger Demanded a sacred life. The people were reluctant, But the Gods you can't deny. As the day led into darkness. The Chief's daughter was to die. The chanting of the people Revealed faith in Pagan fears; For the girl was showing courage Far beyond her sixteen years. She bent over the altar. Then the knife came plunging down, The heart was severed from the soul. But the girl made not a sound. Then the gory offering. He held to the ones he feared Now the Pagan Rites were ended And the Gods has disappeared. The people all were cheering, And the priest was very pleased, Peace again was in the valley. For the Gods had been appeased. By David Libby SCHOOL DAYS Listen undergraduates and you shall hear, What happened in school when we were here; We studied hard, but still had fun, We the class of sixty-one. Our Freshman year went very slow. And some of our grades were very low. Our Sophomore year we did find, Just two more years of steady grind. Our Junior year to our consternation Was just another of repitition; Our Senior year went very fast. And we were glad it was our last. The last year went by with a leap and bound. And soon graduation rolled around; So undergraduates study with all your might. Because before you know it, it will be your big night. By Geraldine Fisher c y IaSas Staff FRONT ROW: S. Manson, H. GLEE CLUB OF 1960-1961 The Glee Club sang a couple of selections for Open House, which was sponsored by the School Improvement Association. They also prepared Christmas carols for the Christmas Program at the High School. They are now preparing selections for baccalaureate and commence- ment. THE BALLAD OF MIKE McCORD AND HIS HOT ROD FORD Mike left South China Dance Hall, one cold and rainy night. Two other boys were with him, both feeling pretty tight. They were moving right along, 'cause it was their night to prowl. When a blue light started flashing, and a siren started to howl. He couldn't let them catch him, if they did they'd all be sunk. They would send Mike up for speeding, and the boys for being drunk. They hit Vassalboro village at a pretty good rate of speed. He was sure they wouldn’t catch him, he had built up quite a lead. Then they lit out for Winslow with the pedal to the board. Mike saw some headlights in his mirror, they were gaining on Mike's Ford. They spun around a corner, the rear wheels began to slide. His buddies cried, Slow down, Mike, Like, let's stop this wild ride. At better than 100 he kept up the wild race. He wasn't sure just how much longer his old Ford could hold the pace. The lights of Winslow loomed ahead, they were a welcome sight. He couldn't slow her down too much, or in jail he’d spend the night. They flew across the bridge, and into Waterville at 1:00 Then the Ford got overheated, Mike thought Now we're in for fun! They flew up College Avenue with the smoke just rolling blue. Then a bus pulled out in front, that's where they met their Waterloo. When you leave South China Dance Hall, take your time, you'll be just as well. Than if you killed yourself and others just because you were raising hell. Robert Hunt 7 Jarsitij KNEELING: Coach Pooler Left to right: H. Chesley, N. Fitzpatrick, T. Weymouth, Bo. Witham, Bu. Witham, R. Hunter, L. Hunter,-D. Proctor, K. Scott. Coach Tom Pooler called the team to practice on November 25. There were nine men starting out for the Varsity. They were: Larry Hunter, Terry Weymouth, Harvey Chesley, and Don Proctor of the senior class; Butch With- am, Neil Fitzpatrick, Royce Hunter, and Bo Witham of the junior class; and Sonny Scott of the sophomore class. Later on Malcolm Steeves, a senior, started working with the squad. Then Sonny Scott left off to aid the junior varsity. Having slow first halves in many of our games resulted in many of the de- feats. In the regular play season, the team had 5 victories and 11 defeats. In the regional playoff at Jay, the fine Jay squad beat us. After a slow first half, the team came back to give them a good try for the win. Frost, W. Stinson. G. Sherburne, K. Abbott. SECOND ROW: Mana- ger L. Buzzell, E. Wood, R. Card, D. Bradford, H. Cram, S. Booker, Coach Kersey. About October 25, there were 12 to 15 Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior boys who reported to Coach Kersey to practice for the JV's. As the practice continued and the games drew near, everyone was getting very excited, for most of us had never played, except for a little in Grammar School. November 29 was our first game and we went to Searsport. There we lost by 25 or 30 points. After that game we lost a valuable asset to the team, Kennie Chase. The next two games that we played, we again lost by 30 points. After a lot of hard practicing, we finally beat the Hinckley JV’s by a score of 35-19. We were very happy, for that was our first win. As the season progressed, we had won five in a row and went to Monson with a 5-3 record. There we were beaten by a very skillful team. 45-42. Since then we have lost one game, but hope to beat Monson at Clinton. Now, as the season comes to an end, I think that we have had a very successful season and we owe it mostly to our coach, Mr. Kersey. Walter Stinson Left to right: Gail Gauthier, Caron Nelson, Prudy Whitten, Anne Fuller, Sonya Frost, Linda Welch, and Cynthia Witham. This year, we decided to get underway early. With the help of Miss Coburn, we chose Cynthia Witham as the new cheerleader, and Veronica Rand as the substitute. We purchased orange cloth for our new blouses, and wore the black skirts that were new last season. At this time we wish to thank our mothers for making the blouses. With Miss Coburn’s help, we have had a successful season of cheering. lfumn CLASS OF 1960 Mary Ann Beale Clinton Waitress Daniel Bowman Kentucky Army Norris Braley Clinton Ski-Land Mill Brenda Carr Waterville Hathaway Sandra Chase Waterville Hathaway Mary Dodge Waterville Thayer Hospital William Fuller Bath Bath Iron Works Beverly Frost Massachusetts Peabody Home Beverly Giles Clinton William Gordon Winslow Purelac Dairy Dwayne Hunter New Brunswick N.B.B.I. His teeth did rattle in the cold; T'was hard to move around. He went to start his car that day To go to school and teach. But all he heard was the starter wjiirl - It made him want to screech. He did not want to walk from town For that would seem too strange. The thought of a taxi got him down For he was low on change. His ears were cold, his nose was red When he arrived in town He had not not spent a cent of cash But walking got him down. By Anne Brewster CRIME DOESN’T PAY Every night when the sky is full of stars, The world still seems empty to a man behind bars. My brothers and I thought it was right. To get revenge for our father that night. We soon found out it didn’t pay. While in that dark, lonely, prison, day after day. It really isn't the cell that counts, It's your conscience that kills you, ounce by ounce. But if God can see fit to forgive, Then I can see why I will want to live. To serve him faithfully, day by day, And always remember that crime doesn't pay. By Sharon Page SPRING Spring is when the world's reborn, And on the trees buds are born. Green grass begins once more to grow, To overtake the cold white snow. Spring is when boys and girls walk, Upon the beaten paths of lovers lane. As they stroll they softly talk, And love will once more begin to flame. Spring is when all is blind, And studies once more drag behind. For spring has come and love is new, And boy tells girl, I love you.
