DEDICATION An empty desk stands in its row A reminder of the past The memory, oh well we know Of you, a member of our class. All of us will long recall Your carefree air and way Nothing bothered you at all In all your work and play 18 Now this year our class will take Different paths of life to try, You didn't have a chance to make A success of life, and why? Why were you deprived Of life given to the rest? And if you had survived What would you have done best? But who are we to know, We, your remaining classmates Even as through life we go, We know not our own fates. S., at Colby College M. A., at Bates College Correspondence Course at University of Maine Three Years at C.H.S. EDITORIAL DO WE NEED A CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL? Our high school offers the students three courses: a general course, business course, and college course. In the freshman year a student has one choice concerning subjects he may take either general math or algebra. The second year he may choose several of his subjects. When he becomes a senior he may choose all his courses except English which is required. Now what can this small high school offer for extra subjects? The variety is small compared to larger schools. There is only a faculty of five teachers. The student does not have a very broad field from which to choose. Latin is taken by three students but this is taken outside of school. Music, art, and other culture courses aren't even in the cuniculum. A school with three hundred to five hundred students would be able to give a variety of courses. There would be more teachers to teach in various fields. There would be large enough groups demanding special courses, such as: an, music, agriculture, shop, special courses in math and science, home economics and physical education. Besides basketball and baseball, many other sports could be played. Students would have an opportunity to participate in an activity of their choice. Some who would not be basketball stars might excel in swim- ming or hockey. This gives a student a much wider choice and helps to develop each person as an all around individual. I don't think it would hurt the students in any way. If a few small towns joined together to build one large school it would be of benefit to all. It would give a better preparation for those going on to school. Students not going on to school would be prepared for a job upon completing high school. CLASS HISTORY In the year of '55, vve started our freshman year with 24 members. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: Francis Gorey, President; Carolyn Sherburne, Vice President; Sandra Foss, Secretary; Donna Ward, Treasurer. Student Council members were: Eleanor Swanson, and William Welch. Our basketball representatives were: Patricia Gauthier, Eleanor Swanson, Eleanor Stewart, Carolyn Sherburne, Donna Ward, Francis Gorey, Neal McLellan, Peter Fuller, Phillip Adams, Roger Tuttle, William Welch, Charles Weymouth, and Eugene Irish. On the cheering squad was Eleanor Swanson. Our first class advisor was Mr. Philbrick. The thing we remember most of all is our freshman reception, where we became full pledged freshmen. We entered the one-act play contest for the first time. When we returned '56, we found we had lost Adrian Roy and Roger Tuttle, but had gained Cynthia Bowman and Daniel Bowman. This still made us 24 members. We elected the following new officers: William Welch, President; Carolyn Sherburne, Vice President; Eleanor Stewart, Secretary; Sophie Hanscom, Treasurer. Student Council members were: Eleanor Swanson, and Francis Gorey. Our basketball representatives were: Donna Ward, Eleanor Swanson, Carolyn Sherburne, Eleanor Stewart, Phillip Adams, Peter Fuller, Eugene Irish, and William Welch. Our only boy on the varsity was Neal McLellan. Eleanor Swanson was still our only cheerleader. We entered the one-act play contest again this year. Sandra Foss and William Welch were our king and queen candidates for the Field Day. Miss Coburn was our class Advisor. We started our third year in the fall of '57, with 20 members. We lost Francis Gorey, Cynthia Bowman, Phillip Adams, Joe Ramsdell, Neal McLellan, and later on Patricia Gauthier. We gained Judy Reid, and Barbara Trudel. We elected the following class officers: Eleanor Swanson, President; Robert Beale, Vice President; Judy Reid, Secretary: Sophie Hanscom, Treasurer. Our class was represented in the Student Council by Mary Lou Peters, Eleanor Swanson, and William Welch. Those who went out for basketball were: Eleanor Stewart, Eleanor Swanson, Donna Ward, Peter Fuller, and William Welch. Our only cheerleader this year from our class was Carolyn Sherburne. Our class Advisor was Miss Totman. She was also our play director and we won first place. We had our Junior play which was called Inner Willy. We also had dances during the year. We started our last year of high school in the fall of '58, with 22 members. We gained Sandra Iffland, and Janice Dunphy. Later in the year we lost Eleanor Swanson. We elected our class officer for the last year of high school: Robert Beale, President; Carolyn Sherburne, Vice President; Eleanor Swanson, Secretary; Mary Lou Peters, Treasurer. After losing Eleanor Swanson we elected Eleanor Stewart, our new class Secretary. William Welch, President of Student Council and Sophie Hanscom were chosen to represent us on the Student Council. William Welch, Donna Ward, and Eleanor Stewart represented us in basketball. Carolyn Sherburne is still our only cheerleader even though other Senior girls tried out for it. Miss Coburn was chosen for the second time to be our class advisor. She has helped us in many ways and we wish to thank her. We had our Senior Play called, Brain Storm in the fall. It turned out successful even though we had to put a lot of work into it. We feel even though we haven't worked as hard as we should have, we have earned the privilege to graduate and to go on out into the world to see what it has to offer each one of us.
