To MRS. GIRLANDINE LIBBY We the class members of the class of nine- teen hundred fifty eight with deep appreci- ation, dedicate this issue of the Syllabus to Mrs. Libby, our teacher, and our friend. REUNION When our minds return to days gone by We remember fun and wonder why, A streak of sunshine once we had. Was taken away to leave us sad Our hearts reveal what must come true That far away beyond the night Will come a time with sunshine bright, In our class reunion beyond the sun, William Welch '59 THE LATE BUS One day my friend and I were waiting for the bus. We saw some ice on the river. Let’s go down on the ice and skip school, ” my friend said. I didn't know what to do at first, but in an instant I told him I would skip school. After an hour I thought the bus had gone by.. My friend and I went out in the middle of the river, I heard a large splash and there was my friend pinned between two large pieces of ice. He yelled for help. I knew I never could get to the house in time. When I ran up the bank I saw my bus. I yelled for help and the bus driver heard me and came running to the river. He ran out on the river with me and helped me pull my friend out. We ran to my friend’s house where he changed to dry clothes. As he stood near the fire shivering he said, I don't think we'll ever try that trick again. By ROBERT WRIGHT GRADE 8 IT DOESN’T PAY In the school building Some will say It doesn’t pay. But to me, you know It isn't like the snow. That will soon melt away. It's like the ground, That will always stay. Some will giggle. Fool and play. Those are the ones who say School doesn't pay! BILL'S SERVICE STATION, Waterville Sponsored by THE STONE AGENCY, Pittsfield STEWART 8' ACERS, Benton IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS If I had a million dollars, I'd travel day and night. I'd probably continue to travel With very little delight. I'd travel from here to Switzerland; I'd travel from here to France; But wherever I would travel I'd feel uneasy in million dollar pants. After my money's spent and over; I'll head back to my family to be Always welcome like a falcon Before heading back to sea. By HENRY LOMBARD '58 VIEW FROM MY WINDOW The view from my window is pleasant Each morning I find something new The reflection of colors on the mountain Plus the sunshine of the grass wet with dew. When I awake each morning I dash to the window to see Whether God has made the world stormy Or sunny as can be. Oh, the many times I've wondered Of what would happen to me If I were forced to leave my home Situated by a great sea. But the thought that always lingers When I think of that dark thought The secret of happiness is simple Wherever you are, do as you ought. CLASS WILL We, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fifty-eight do hereby bequeath to our honorable successors our multitude of virtues and our vices. Other people have black vices but ours are white. If we tell lies, they are only little white ones. Although our successors are endowed with a surplus of brains, we pass on to them our vast intellectual viewpoint. It's some viewpoint, believe me! We do not will and bequeath to the underclassmen all of our possessions but only such portion as we shall have no occasion to use in future years. Item 1. All information, correct and mistaken, remembered and forgotten, we set aside for our own use. Item 2. Our high school memories we reserve for ourselves for 100 years. Item 3. A few habits of politeness, ideals of fair play, principals of good health, increasing powers of understanding we retain for the term of our natural lives. Item 4. To our teachers, we give and bequeath all the amazing knowledge and startling information that we have furnished them from time to time in our various test papers. We also leave thanks for their patience and understanding. Lastly we have a few individual bequests to make — 1. To Alart Page, we bequeath Jerry Starbird's ability to manage the library. Have fun; Jerry did. 2. To Peter Fuller, we bequeath Richard Stewart's and David Watson's musical talents. Practice! 3. To John Taylor, we bequeath Wayne Crommett's position as basketball manager. Stay in sight. 4. To Rolfe Frost and Robert Nash, we bequeath John McKenney's dignity so that during the course of time they may become proper and dependable Seniors. 5. To Eleanor Swanson and Mary Lou Peters, we bequeath Linda Gordon's and Marjorie Higgins' habits of leaving the room for something or other during study hall in the main room. 6. To Billy Welch and Charlie Weymouth, we bequeath Jerry Goodwin's and Tilton Hanscom’s ability to know the answers to every question without cracking their books before class. 7. To Norris Braley, we bequeath Henry Lombard's ability to earn and save money. 8. To Leon Philbrick, we bequeath Dwayne Gray's knack of always being good. 9. To Billy Gordon, we bequeath Richard Proctor's basketball talents. We couldn't persuade Jerry Goodwin to part with his. 10. To Mary Beale, we bequeath Patricia Christiano's position on the Student Council. Always do your best. 11. To Peggy York, we bequeath Marianne Barrett’s talent for growing tall. 12. To Tommy King, we bequeath Dennis King's ability to make wise remarks so that he will have one for every occasion. 13. To Robert Beale, we bequeath Raymond Locke's shyness. Make good use of it, Bob. In witness, whereof, we the graduating class of nineteen hundred fifty-eight, have set our hand and seal this June fifth, in the year nineteen hundred and fifty-eight. We also won First Prize in the One-Act Play contest, Sinapore Spider, directed by Miss Totman. The fall of 1957 we returned with sixteen members. At our first class meeting, we elected the following class officers: President, Dwayne Gray; Vice President, John McKenney; Secretary, Linda Gordon; Treasurer, David Watson.
