MISS MADELINE P. WOODWORTH, our teacher and friend, who has helped to guide us through our years at Clinton High School, we the graduating class of 1957 dedicate this issue of the Sylla- bus, in appreciation of the time she has spent working with us. In Appreciation We, the members of the class of 1957, have appreciated all the things which people have done for us to make our years at Clinton schools such happy and mem- orable ones. To thank all of them is impossible, because their help started way back, our first day of school to be exact. We would like to thank all our teach- ers, from the first day in the first grade to the last day of our Senior year. We began to realize it last year. No one who isn't in school realizes how much help a teacher is to a student, not even the students themselves until they get to be Juniors or Seniors. They encourage us to get good marks and to further our education. They talk to the students personally about juvenile delinquency and what it can do to our characters in the future. We would like to thank last year’s faculty for providing such good teaching, coaching, and helpful 'suggestions which have helped each and every one of us in such a way that no one but us could express. The Lions Club we wish to thank for helping us and giving us the privilege of putting on the Annual Field Day to provide money for our activity fund so we may enjoy better sports. Next, wewouldlike to say thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Myron Watson for pro- viding a home for so many wonderful teachers, and for making their stay such memorable ones. We also want to give many thanks to Robert Buzzell for the use of his buses which has made our school trips so much more enjoyable. Last, but not least, about the most important group of all is our present faculty. First, there is our principal, Mr. Gilbert Philbrick, who has guided us and has given us many helpful suggestions for making money for our class trip; next, is Miss Madeline Woodworth who has coached our class plays; Miss Margaret Totman, who has coached the glee club and helped us with the school paper; Mrs. Girlandine Libby, who put up with so much from us during the year, and who has made our homeroom so pleasant; and last, but surely not least, is Miss Priscilla Coburn to whom we extend our thanks for helping to make this yearbook possible. All of us Seniors wish you all the best of luck in the coming future. Carlene Bessey '57 '1 Got MY eYis oH JbU PRISCILLA COBURN Commercial Auburn, Maine, School of Commerce One year at C. H. S. I frequently hear com- ments such as: She thinks that she is better than anyone else. Just because he is a Senior he can get away with anything. I know when I was an underclassman I heard plenty of comments, and I made a few too! Now that I am a Senior I do not feel any more important or more intelligent than I ever did! Possibly these uncomplimentary remarks originate from the fact that we Seniors lead such busy lives that we do not have so much leisure time to spend with the others. When we come right down to it, our Senior year is usually the year that we settle down to do things for ourselves. As editor-in-chief of the yearbook staff, I can truthfully say that I have plenty on my mind both day and night, but I am not griping about it. Sure, I spent many nights at the schoolhouse until ten or eleven o'clock trying to get the yearbook ready and the material sent out on time. There were also times when 1 nad one section to send, but at the last minute, 1 discovered a picture missing, or I had forgotten to tell someone I wanted his write-up at a certain time. As a whole, though, I enjoyed every minute of my work on the yearbook. I would like to thank the Senior class for giving me the honor and privilege of par- ticipating in such a rewarding experience. I sincerely hope that my classmates have as many happy memories of high school as I. I have been hearing rumors lately about the Consolidation of Schools, especially since Albion High School burned. As I understand it, the towns of Clinton, Unity, Albion, Benton, are the towns interested in the Consolidation of Schools. I think that is the cheapest way for the tax payers of these communities to get around the school problem. It would be great, be- cause there would be more courses available, and also more sports in which to partici- pate; such as; basketball, baseball, hockey, skiiing, track, etc. But, on the other hand, how would we be able to stay after school to practice if we live five or six miles from the gym? I think that it would be a good idea for the townspeople to get together and really support this project. Antoinette King '57 Editor-in-Chief Consolidation Jerry Goodwin '58 Assistant Editor C. Antoinette King, Constance Weymouth, Beverly Gerald, represented our class on I have a secret place that I go to when I am troubled, sad or have a desire to get away from people. This secret place is set in the earth. It looks as though it were a sunken kingdom. It is surrounded by a round wall of crystal stones with patches of moss. The door is similiar to the wall. I'm the only person who has a key and knows the way. When I am inside, it gives me a feeling of being in dreamland. I sink in as I step on the short, soft green carpet of grass. As I look around I see the queen, like flowers all over the ground. The wall is covered with red balls of roses climbing upward. The wishing well in the middle of the garden is also covered with roses. The well is of crystal and encircled by a bench of the same crystal. As I sit on the bench I can put my hand in the clear, cool water. One day after a shower of rain a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. The rain- bow plus the red, hot sun was reflected in the crystal well. A last lonely drop of rain fell whirling the rainbow and the sun around and around. Would you want to leave a place like this? the cheering squad. Helen York ‘57 Linda Welch Grade 8 H. York J. Miller G. Watson R. Carr L. Hunter C. Bessey B. Gerald S. Hanscom J. McLellan P. As we lost a cheerleader last year at graduation time, Mary Beale was chosen from these who tried out for cheering. The faculty selected Antoinette King as our head cheerleader. Linda Gordon and Margie Higgins were unable to attend the first games because of injuries received in an automobile accident. The game before Christmas, Linda again joined us, but much to our regret, Margie was unable to cheer with us this year. However, we know that she was with us in spirit. We all feel that we have had a successful season in spite of the fact that we lost one of our best rooters. Sponsored by DRAPEAU'S - Waterville 'YIE i. ns m E To Go BROS. The one thing they were looking forward to was the class trip. Boy, what fun! Gee, said Sue, won’t it be fun for all the gang to see New York together, be- sides it will probably be our last time together. Guess your right, said one of the boys, say, how much money do we need any- Mary replied, I don't know for sure, but I'd say close to $1,300. How much do we have? someone else asked. $600 or more, I guess; stated Mary. We’d better get busy and have a few dances, someone added. Yes, that's true enough. Everytime we suggest something, they say it's a very good idea, but do it yourself, in other words, Sue added. Do it yourself, but with little help from adults. It's usually a flop, too. Too bad our parents cannot help. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm tired of this, Mary said. They made it to New York and had a wonderful time. While on their way, someone thought up this rhyme: I'm just a little maple tree sitting firm and tall Through summer, winter, spring, and even through the fall One day a robin came, to build a little nest, For him, his mate, and their little chicks to rest. Now I am happy as you would probably know. For the birds made their home here and said they'd never go. way?
