We had quite a few nice times along the way. Let’s look back at our freshman and sophomore years. That was the time for getting acquainted and making new friends. Our officers for the first year were: Kathryn Kercheval, President; Joan Lawson, Vice- President; Jeri Brookbank, Secretary; Barbara Wright, Treasurer. For our sophomore year we elected the following officers: John Kitinoja, President; Betty Jo Ricauda, Vice-President; Judy Richardson, Secretary; Barbranell Eastwood, Treasurer. By the time we we re junior s we felt quite a bit more at home and we had more responsibility than before. That year it was up to us to have a very nice Junior-Senior Prom -- and we did! The name of it was ‘‘Moonlight Cruise.” It was a lot of work but well worth all our effort. Our officers that year we re : Miriam Deeds, President; Charles Massa, Vice-President; Betty Haymaker, Treasurer; Ruth Householder, Secretary. This year has kept us quite busy with annual pictures, our class party, ordering cards and invitations and all the other little things that go along with being a senior. We were busiest of all the last two weeks of school. The Senior Picnic, Commencement, and Baccalaureate exercises really has us going. But we would be willing to go through it all over again. It was lots of fun! 10 THE INNER WILLY Senior Class Play Willoughby Adams has long been under the influence of his three maiden aunts. He’s dutifully practiced piano, swallowed gallons of cod liver oil, eaten turnips, which he loathes, and listened to his aunt’s argu- ments over whether he should become a lawyer, musician, or architect (he wants to be a geologist). Now, with the protagonist, Inner Willy, to help, he spurns these impositions and even asserts himself to notice girls for the first time. Then the predicaments really begin--gleefully man- euvered by Inner Willy. He asks attractive Carol to the school dance, and is mauled by Carol’s “steady”, Stanley Clark, for so doing. Two more dance partners materialize--Marybell Turner (his aunt’s choice) who doesn’t have the mumps after all and can go, and Trudy, who assumes he will escort her. Not until Willoughby satisfactorily disposes of the girl complications and makes an issue of a career choice, does the pest, Inner Willy, vanish behind the sofa, leaving a suit of underwear behind on the floor. Not long ago I received a letter from Winifred Craft, who is married now and living in South Bend. She wrote that she would like to look up some of the old'gang, just out of curiosity (you know girls). So we planned to start traveling in opposite directions to see how many of our classmates of 1950 we can locate. Tomorrow morning each of us will begin our trip; then on the 19th of this month we will meet in Chicago to compare notes. That gives us exactly two weeks for our jaunt. January 5, 1965 Dear Diary, I couldn’t find anyone here in Michigan where I live, so I took a hop, skip, and a jump to New York, lovely place to try to find somebody. January 8, 1965 Dear Diary, Well, I had no trouble finding Betty McLeish who is drawing the blueprints for a new theater on Fifth Avenue. Betty told me that Louis Pilipovich and Larry Kite are bossing the job. I had dinner with Joe Lane and Bob Anderson who are pilots for some big airline here. They said that Rosemary Berto, Joann Bertolino, and Jeri Brookbankare air hostesses for the same company and that Archie McLeish operates the telegraph set there, along with about four other jobs. Got a small note from Winifred. She’s in Hollywood.’la-de-da”. She had lunch one day with John Moore and Wayne Beard who are starring in a musical, “The Old Gold and Black’’. It seems that Eugene and Joe Rodich are stagehands on the same set. Bill Donzero is also in Hollywood giv.ing the girls a big rush. January 12, 1965 Dear Diary, I am now in Florida and am about the color of a ripe tomato. There was no sun like this in Indiana. I saw Virginia Bonucchi in the hotel; she is quite the young executive with her chain of dress shops. With her are Eleanor Straw , her secretary, and Jane Pesavento, Betty Jo Ricauda and Joan Lawson who are working as models. Joe Volk and Chris Wright are her advertising managers. Jim Reeder is down here trying to breed some kind of tropical chicken. While walking down the street, I met Jerry Ferguson, in the flesh. He’s an M. D. here (poor invalids!). He told me that Barbara Christopher and Charles Massa graduated from I. U. Medical School the same time he did. Chuck Massa is a general practitioner in a small town near here and Barbara Christopher has gone overseas with a specialized medical unit. Winifred called me today. She’s in the wild, wild West, (Wyoming). She managed to find Louanna Jones who is working with Indian orphans. ‘ ‘ Wahoo’ ’ ! Elaine Kiser has her own Bible school nearby. 28 DIARY OF A 1950 GRADUATE FIFTEEN YEARS LATER (Continued) January 14, 1965 Dear Diary, I’m headed north now by train. Dave Lindsey, Max Call, and Bob Potter are on the train. They are playing pro basketball. Don Vaughn, “Meatball” to us, is their manager. January 15, 1965 Dear Diary, Well, here I am in Clinton again. Jeepers! How familiar everything is. This is one place I do know where I’m going. John Aimone, Paul Ave, and Tom Witkoff have gone into the bakery business. Patty Frist, Lydia Santrach, and Pat Watson are working at Murphys--big fight for the candy counter! Norman Toney is assistant manager. John Veltri and Bill Hardey are still hunting for work (but not trying too hard). Ralph Hayes, War ren Anderson, and Bob Campbell have taken over the Palace Theatre. I went into Pennys mis afternoon and, of all people., Norman Wooten was there to greet me with a big smile. Bill Beard works for him as a bookkeeper. Bill, only a month behind in his work, is rather proud of his position. I saw Mary K. Blanton in Whites this afternoon. She’s mar ried and lives next door to Betty Jo Armstrong. She told me that Jeri Lee Inman, Barbara Clemenz, Carol Jones, and Shirley Lambert are all registered nurses. Another note from Winifred. She’s in Arizona. Don Sutton and Jim Wright are there running a scientific survey on tomato plants. They often see Rudolph Mrdja, Stanley Owens, and Bill Lawson who are working for a construction company nearby. January 1 6, 1965 Dear Diary, I’m still in Clinton. Harold Berry, Lester Wiggins, and Rusty Wilson have taken over the old Ford Garage. Joyce Wright is a dentist, and Imogene Brock is her assistant. Phyllis Stickle was in the office while I was there. She' s mar ried and has three small children. Barbara Shaubi ate lunch with me today. She told me that she is working at the telephone office. She will be up for promotion soon. Beulah F ire stone and Delores Poff are also working as ‘ ‘Hello Girls. ’’ ■ I hear that Mele Balach, Mike Mondich, Dick Wright, and Kenny Stone are all going to run for Mayor of Blanford in the next election—hm--. Something new ! Norman Cottrellhas invented a special kind of specks, that will not break. Betty Griffin has a law office on Main Street. She said that she handles cases for the Gilmore, Kelley and Gilman Enterprise. Carl Walter sweeps floors in the same building. DIARY OF A 1950 GRADUATE FIFTEEN YEARS LATER (Continued) January 17, 1965 Dear Diary, I went to Newport today. I thought that I might see someone I knew and sure enough, the first person I saw was Jerry Huffman. She’s married and works part time as a clerk at the post office. Received another letter from Winifred. She's heading north, too; and she just couldn’t wait to tell me the latest. She had been in Terre Haute, and I guess she just saw scads” of kids, classmates rather. She said Diana Clark is head floorwalker at Kresges. Frank Bregar has set up his own business there; and Betty Haymaker, Margaret Dalton, Barbara Hatley, Ines Sisson and Ruth Householder have a major role in the business. Lona Lee Minett has her own comic strip in Barbranell Eastwood’s newspaper. By the way, I read today--(I really do read something besides the funnies)--that John Airola, Betty McDowell, Dorothy Lohse, and Carolyn Stewart are all teaching at Indiana State. Leila Myers, Mary Alice Smith, Rozella Sims and Loretta Harris have lived up to everyone’s expectations, for they are all happy housewives and proud mothers. January 18, 1 965 Dear Diary, I made my last jaunt today to the big city of Gary. Didn’t see too many people I knew. I did see Barbara Wright in the drugstore this evening. She was in a hurry and so was I, so we didn’t have much time to visit. She’s married now. She did tell me that Don Semancik owns the largest newspaper in Gary. Judy Richardson Marietta is modeling Joyce Hardey’s newest creation in evening wear for Miriam Deeds’ fashion magazine. Pat Wisneski’s new book, Life in C. H. S. is on sale here. Icanhardly wait to read my copy. January 19,1 965 Dear Diary, Here I am in Chicago, but where is Winifred ? She didn’t show up. Maybe it’s a good thing, otherwise I might have missed Patty Delp. She was doing some shopping in' Marshall Field’s. She told me that Lucia Lupato has been mar ried for about two years and that Louis Sasso and Chuck Cargal have gone into partnership in Men’s Ready to Wear. Dave Renwick’s new jet job is on display here. There is talk that Edward Berry is trying to buy it. Patty also told me that Ruth Ann Reed coaches a girls’ basketball team called the Honeybees. Norman Jackson, La Moine Smith and Frank Bino are up here working to see who can get out of the most work. January 20, 1 965 Dear Diary, The big day. Winifred arrived bright and early this morning. You can imagine how it was with both of us talking at once. The only sad part of it is that we have to bid our classmates another fond farewell, but we won’t forget them. (Couldn’t if we wanted to.) This is a slight improvement over last year’s record but a far cry from what we want it to be. The reason for the team’s down- fall this year was lack of experience and reserve strength. Also in many of the games a good break at the right time could have meant the differ- ence between victory and defeat. Next year with ten returning letter- men, everyone, including coaches Art Haverstock and John Bare, are look- ing forward to a good team. The team has won nineteen and has lost only ten games. Besides the high scoring of Dave Lindsey and Max Call, who were the high- est, the team scoring is well balanced among the players. We couldn’t ask for a much better season as far as the tourneys are concerned. There will be five of the varsity teams ending their high school basket- ball at the end of this season. But there is no doubt in our minds that the team we have next year will try just as hard as the boys did this season.
