We were far above the common, or garden variety, in that after the first week or so we could actually tell the difference be- tween the Assembly and Mrs. Cloyd's office. Our guiding officers for the first year of our high school career were: president, John Valenteg vice-president, Martha Mackie, and secretary-treasurer, James Short. Our sponsors were Mr. Jenkins and Miss Newport. For our class party over 100 goggled - eyed Freshies sat spell- bound at the deeds and daring of King of the Royal Mounted, at the local cinema. The next stage of our development is known as wise fools or in polite terms, Sophomores. We were in that lull between the time that the teacher says, Now act your age: you're practically grown-up Juniors and Seniors, and the other when she says, Oh, well, what can you expect - just a Freshman. George Winters was president of our Sophomore Classg Marian Donna Foster, vice - president: and Martha Mackie, secretary- treasurer. Mr. Stuteville and Mr. Frump had the respon- sibility of sponsoring us. Now Juniors, we felt it our privilege to trample the Freshmen, belittle the Sopho- mores, and envy the Seniors. Our officers were: James Berto, president: Joe Prov- ence, vice - presidentg and James Short, secretary - treasurer. For sponsors we chose Mr. A. T. Hays and Miss Royer. We had a big party in the Gym with a nickelodeon and stuff . Being Juniors, of course, we had a class play. Instead of the regulation one three - act play we reversed the procedure and had three one -act plays - 'tAll for Charity, Who Gets the Car Tonight? , and Mountain Moonshinef' fContinued on page 203 PRESIDENT VICE - PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER Waketleld Klrkman Mary H. Seniors! Oh, the word is music to the weary undergrad and music to the former graduates: but oh, the word means trouble to the weary teacher. But seriously, we weren't so bad tqulety. With the largest class to date - 199 - we were a source of pride to one and all. To pilot us safely through the final stretch we chose as class president, Wakefield Kirkmang vice - president, Mary Helen Kanderag secretary, Paul Marietta: and treasurer, Louis Foli. Our sponsors were Mr. Fred Hayes and Mr. A. T. Hays. We had our class party March 8, in the gym. We ran wild on May 15 -Senior Day. Then the Juniors entertained us with a beautiful Prom on May 17 Then at last - caps and gowns. With a smile on our faces and tears in our eyes, we went through baccalaureate on Sunday, May 19. On Tuesday the 21st we tore up to Turkey Run and had a grand and glorious time. On May 23 Commencement was held, bringing our high school careers to a suc- cessful close. He is accompanied by his faithful Chinese valet, Wing. The house has been unoccupied for twenty years, because it was supposed to be haunted, and yet, a mysterious scream is heard. Don runs to find its cause and returns a few minutes later, unsuccessful only to find Wing missing. Priscilla enters and from her he gathers that people live in the house, seven in all. There's Priscilla, John Alden, Lady McBeth, Mr. Hyde, Mrs. Kluck, Dr. Bunn, and - a scream is heard. That, explains Priscilla, is only Lucille. She's just playing. Lady McBeth enters and mistaking Don for Romeo, imme- diately becomes Juliet. She next switches to Othello as John Alden enters dressed in hunting clothes, with one hen. He is very disap- pointed because he could find no Indians. Don finds out that the insane asylum next door burned last night and Dr. Bunn, who was in charge, borrowed this home until his own could be repaired. Mr. Hyde, also an inmate, thought Wing was Fu Manchu, but is forced by Dr. Bunn to bring him out from where he was going to boil him in oil. Don falls in love with Lucille, who is a very sane girl, but is held there for her money by Dr. Bunn and Artemus Burke. To com- plicate matters, Don's fiancee, Gertrude Finch, and her mother arrive. Finally after several hilarious experiences, Gertrude breaks the engagement and goes home, Dr. Bunn and Artemus Burke are arrested by Don and Silletto, an escaped convict who turns out to be really George Shaw, an actor, the lunatics are taken to another asylum, and Don gets the girl. Mr. Bush was back- field coach and Mr. Bibich handled the reserves. NVe had, of course, Mr. Babe Frump, and Mr. Edward Stuteville as head men in football and basketball, respect- ively. Opening the season with a victory over Dugger. we wound up the year with a score of 6 wins and 5 defeats. The second team was very successful, winning all four games played. The C-men's club sponsored a big Homecoming for the Sullivan game. Mary Louise Paquette ruled as queen with Margaret Reid, Alverna Graham, Ruth Ann VVood, and Rosemary Cogan as attendants. Three gridsters received All- Valley recognition -- John Valente and James Berto on the first team and Paul Mari- etta on the second team. Valente also received the C-men's club award in football. Owing to lack of playing material, our basketball team did not come through in the usual good form, hanging up a record of 4 wins and 13 defeats in the regular schedule. However, all was not lost, as our boys reached the finals in the Sectional. Charles McConnell received the C-1nen's basketball award. Mr. Frump had a collection of chiefly Seventh and Eighth Grade basketball players, known as Babes Bouncers, which had a perfect season, winning all their games. Spring again brought forth track volunteers, both boys and girls. They attended several invitational meets before attending the county meet.
