H. S. history as the class of V128 met for the first time on the decks of tl1e airship, Study, desti11ed to carry us over the land known as High School Education. The capable pilots chosen to carry us safely over the firsti lap of' our journey were Miss Marian Livingston, senior pilot, and james Stout, junior pilot. After encountering the squalls of Cape Exam and suffering minor losses in the seas of failure and departure, we pierced tl1e fog surrounding Sopho- moreland with our plane still intact. The second lap appeared to be fraught with many temptations, but thanks to our newlv-elected commander. jesse Satterlee, and our advisor, Miss Deardorff, the flight was made with many group and individual honors. In the middle of our course it was necessary that our plane change comnianders, and james Stout succeeded Jesse Satterlee. Cautiously we entered the difficult region, the Junior lap. A big chain of mountains, the junior-Senior banquet, was to be crossed. The Zlllltllllll of fuel was low and the engines had to be nursed, or the flight so well begun would probably have ended disastrously. James Stout was again elected flight co1n111a11der and Miss Coate, nav- igator. XYhen half of the junior lap was completed Nliss Coate resigned her position as navigator to go on a more prohtable and enjovable llight, which most people call the Matrimonial Flight. llowever. the llanouet Mountains were still to be crossed. So the voyagers put their heads together and elected Miss Clayton as navigator to replace Miss Coate. .Xs we approached the mountain, junior Prom loomed up beside the Iunior-Senior Ranuuet Moun- tains. However, all the mountains were safely crossed, although the peak. Financial Failure, almost proved the ilight's end. Upon entering the Senior lap a new set of officers were elected with XVarren Stumps. as flight commander. Urcel Daniel as assistant, Pearl Nkvalther as Chief Engineer, Floyd Squires as Radio lixpert, Anna Mildred Smith as Foreign Relations Minister. XYilheln1ine XX'right as Entertainer. and Mrs. McVVethy as Navigator. The voyage was verv peaceful and un- eventful. The good airship successfully completed the trip. arriving at its goal on C'ommencement Day, l9252. Each voyager was presented with a coveted diploma, but not even this kept many of us from wishing that a return trip might be possible. .Tohn Povelones Tommy Confrey Class Historians. Our first stop was at Chicago, where we landed at Soldier's Field amid a huge crowd of cheering spectators. .X foothall game was in progress and in a few moments we, too, were shouting and waving our helmets. XVe were not at all surprised to learn that the coach of the Chicago University team was Fred .Xntonini and that Rohert Griffiths was his assistant. Wie were told that they have written a hook, The Science of Foothallf' published hy Chatlos, tiahony and Co., puhlishers. lYhile we were in Chicago, the weather man, Merrit Smith, predicted a cold wave. In a short time wie were on the sunny peninsula of Florida. VVhom should we find managing an orange ranch hut Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meyers! Mrs. Meyers was formerly 'Hannah Lawson. VVithin two hours after we had arrived. we were hesieged on every side hy newspaper men and press photo- graphers. .Xniong these we saw llerhert Donald, aviation editor for the Tallahassee llerald, and llenry Murdock, reporter for the St. l'etershurg Times. .Xt Miami the newspapers informed us that ,loe liawkins was under hond of 219100000 for selling land six miles out in the Gulf, and one half mile under water. .Ioe always was an enterprising lad, hut we wept to think that his ainhition had hrought him to this. Flying on up the coast we soon arrived at Norfolk, Ya. The hattleship V. S. S. Indiana was lying in the docks and one day we were taken out to see it. The captain, Utto Turner, showed us over the ship. Then we fiew to New York to enjoy the sights of the great nietropolisf On our first night we attended the Gilliat Follies, competitor of the Ziegfeld Follies. XYe saw Floyd Squires sitting in the haldheaded row, much enchanted hy the dancing of Mildred lioyd and Catherine llasso. Mr. Squires was recuper- ating from the nerve-racking effects of a hreach of promise suit hrought against him hy Dorothy Nelson. XVilliam Xlvake had sprung into prominence hecause of the clever cartoons he had drawns illustrating the case. lie was iimnediately employed hy the liearst Puhlishing Co., to work for the New York Iixaminer, of which paper Urcel Daniel was editor. .Xniong the many wonderful places we visited in New York was the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There we viewed two hundred wonderful masterpieces, one, The Banks of the XVahashf' painted hy Martha Spear, and the other a copy ot' The Cleaners, hy llelen Baird. On a trip to Coney lsland we stopped at a hot dog stand to purchase refreshments. XVhoopety Hang! l'oor l'atl XYQ had truly believed that marrying Madge Sanders would reform him, but Dame Nature was up to her old tricks. The next lap of our journey carried us to Philaclelphia to the National .fXirmen's League Convention. There our pilot, Sidney Silverman, delivered the main address of the meetnig. l'earl W'alther was much congratulated for her bravery in the field of aviation, and llerbert Nichols was appointed traf- fic manager of the New York-Los Angeles Line. Harold Garlinghouse gave a very good talk on NVhy l l'refer a Richard Reed Monoplane to a Chevrolet Automobile. Leona Reeve and Annabel Runyan appeared before the conven- tion to ask that a beauty parlor be installed in each plane, so that the time lost in making the flight might be made up in the torture chamber. ,Xt Detroit, Michigan, we were introduced to the general manager of the Ford Motor Company, joe Rolando. Mr. Rolando's secretary was Rosie Nardi, and from her we learned that NVaneta Lear had become the champion speed typist of the United States. We visited the Home for Toothless Hens of the United States, and were shown about by Lina Hill and limma Pigg. founders of the home. At Kansas City, Missouri, we admired a new post office that had just been built under the direction of Albert llrann. The post office clerk, Thelma jones, gave us a letter containing the information that Susanna llosa and Esther Forte had departed for Africa to search for the missing link. After a trip to a beauty parlor, our radio expert came back with the startling in-- formation that Lucille and Louise Roberts were operating a chain of beauty parlors and specialized in the application of Hazel lioren Complexion Beauti- fiers. Claude Dugger had become owner of the largest grain elevator in the Middle VVest. Une evening the Kansas Citv Rpublican contained the news that Jean VVilkie's husband. tlohn VVhite. had starved to death. The case was being examined by Louise Foltz, health commissioner. VVhen we again took to the air, we aimed straight for Los Angeles, California. Our radio expert tuned in on station CHS, broadcasting from ln- dianapolis, Indiana. Cecil Alexander was the announcer. Mary Laird, who had gained national fame as a concert singer, sang two songs. Anna McMil- lan starred in a little sketch, Baby Face. Une afternoon We were forced down on account of engine trouble. and landed on-an Indian reservation in Colorado. Wie were surrounded by several little Indian boys, who marveled at our plane and wanted to be taken up for SYVEFQ-Tlwffqht Sie N J J ffl-Nfss.. XVe promised them the granting of this wish if they would direct us to the home of the commissioner. lrja Lehtovaara had been appointed commissioner by the govermnent, and she in turn had hired Leafa Strickler as school supervisor. After a few' days we were again on our merry way and did not stop until we reached l.os Angeles. ' A reception committee headed by Mayor Violet York greeted us. Un the first evening we attended a banquet given in our honor by the Eaton Motion Pictures Corporation, present among whom were Thomas Roberts, successor to NVill Hays, czar of the moviesg his secretary, Mary Novella, and Ruth lioren and Dorothy Parker, stars in the show, Little One, He Good. Amedeo Antonini was there also, but he snubbed us as if we were poor rela- tions. . Two important topics were occupying the attention of the public just then. Une was the arrival of one of Iiurope's most distinguished noblemen, the Count de Spice. XVe felt like creeping away into an ant hill when the newspaper carried daily pictures of Vera Jones, the Countess de Spice, who was renowned for her beautiful auburn hair. The other topic was centered on the efforts of a great engineer and scientist, John Povelones, to solve the problem of adequately supplying the population of two million people with pure water. ' ' As you may readily guess, there are many quacks and fakes in Los Angeles. Une evening, Mr. Silverman, a believer in such things, went to have his palm read. XYhen he returned, he told us that his faith in fortune telling was shaken because he had discovered Dorothy Haun and Sarah Davis posing as oriental palmists. The ladies had disguised themselves. but were so enrap- tured on seeing Mr. Silverman that in their eagerness they had ceased to speak Hindu and had revealed their true identity. VVilliam VVhyte was a famous evangelist in Los Angeles, and was becoming very rich at it. One beautiful Sunday wfe crossed to Catalina Island, which had again come into the public.notice because Anna Murdock had succeeded in swim- ming there in record breaking time. Marina Ave and Gladys Ball had entered the carnival business. They were running a refreshment stand, selling goose- berry pop and home-grown sardincs. XVhen we flew to San Francisco, our First visit was made to San Fran- cisco's famous Chinatowln. NVe had no expectation of meeting any Clinton people here, but an encounter with XVL1 Stumpie proved to us that this world isn't such a big place after all. Win Stumpie had been employed by a Chinese laundry to write laundry bills. The queer part of it all was that he could not speak a word of the Chinese language but was quite adept at Writing it. lie had married Anna Mildred sixteen years before, and they were contem- plating entering the laundry business themselves. In Oakland we met Elizabeth Lord, who was owner of the Universal Apartment house. Mayme Xvilliams was the manager. After spending six hectic weeks in California. we took off for Indiana to hear a program broad- casted by station H-O-M-R. :X -f-Ay-- :rx ,RN 5 FX 'X 'J J f'f.'-N,-NNN Qs 'lg ' .1 x If fpxs jf , , , A ff jf X fax XX i-- 'iTiA' 'Q,7 ' e'---e,,,g,,--ff'-KS' ,.f '- ,, 'xx wa- -.wL-, .YB .- xx, 914:56-l- - fyib X Page twenty-seven -iff ' -' ' 5 0 ld'G'6 Z0'f1nd3Z.aCk 5 .ixnzb-, -M QA-- Y - 4 , 1 QNX '4 J K-,NMX 1 2 If If-51,- H.-. . The merits and demerits of the various participants are carefully weighed and the winners selected from both the oratorical and reading divisions. The persons who win first place in each division are given gold medals for them- selves and silver shields for their schools. Those who win second place are given silver medals for themselves. Last year Clinton High School was represented in the oratorical contest by Urcel Daniel and in the reading con- test by Fannie Rosen, by virtue of their having won in the local tryouts. Urcel won second place in the county contest. ,A -- ,- :S CWNA S! XXL N ff ., 3.5 If px: Df --- -- ,. The game was not very fast because hoth teams were green, hut in the second half C. ll. S. woke up and played a fairly good game for the first ol the season. lYe wonder if Mickey is still thirsty. CLINTON 13, GEORGETOWN 8 ln the second game of the season Spike's warriors defeated the strong Georgetown eleven in their own hack-yard. ln the first quarter the sucker eleven had things their own way and scored the first touchdown of the game. This was what stimulated the boys They then put the hall over the goal line, adding the extra point to take the lead. In the third quarter the Georgetown crew got two more points hy a safety and this put them in thc lead, hut they didn't keep it, hecause Spike-'s men thought it fit and proper to get another touchdown. and succeeded in doing so. CLINTON 6, BICKNELL 19 C. H. S. met their only defeat of the season at the hands of the Bicknell eleven. The Kelleymen played their poorest lJ1'Z111Cl of football of the season, and it was due to this and IIOI to the good playing of the Bicknell squad that Clinton was defeated. The Clinton High hoys gained twice as much ground from scrimmage, but this d0esn't do any good if they haven't got the punch to put the hall over. CLINTON 38, WEST LAFAYETTE 0 The Kellymen went on the field determined to avenge the defeat of the preceding Saturday, and W'est Lafayette was the sufferer. C. H. Instead ol playing around the tirst quarter, they went in there and got two touchdowins lmetore XX'est Lafayette knew they were playing Ioothall. ln the second quarter Ami decided that two touchdowns weren't enough and he had to hlock a punt and walk over the line for another one. After this C. ll. S. scored at wfill. CLINTON 7, GARFIELD O lip until this time. out of the seven games Clinton and Garheld had played, Clinto11 had won three, Garfield had won three, and one was a tie. The Kellyinen went down to Ciartielcl to prove that C. H. S. was the better school, and although it was a little hard to do, after forty-eight minutes of arguing, our eleven deliators won the dehate. 'l'his was a great day for Clinton lligh, hecause their third team suc- ceeded in putting the hall over the line for two touchdowns while the tiar- tield seconds sneaked one over in the last minute of play. CLINTON 46, ROBINSON 0 For the second time in nine years, a Clinton team heat Robinson, and for the iirst time in nine years they played on a dry held. C. ll. S. was determined to avenge the defeats they had received from Rohinson, and they came upon the held, fighting mad. This was the great- est victory a Clinton team ever won, and the boys surely worked hard for it. Clinton High played the highest type of footlmall a high school could possihly play, and time after time the line would go down and get the secondary to make possible the long gains which the hackiield made. Spike said that he was proud of his team and well satisfied, and when he says such a thing you can he sure the boys played a real game. ETX - 'Nf'e'a N f'N. I 'N 1 .f f-C SY XY wr W Q K Af PNB 'f 2? S. did not play the best of football, but they didu't have to. and this gave the boys a chance to get in shape for the next two games. CLINTON 31, OAKLAND 0 The boys showed their appreciation of Spike's services to Clinton High by defeating the Oakland crew. This was the lirst time this year that Oak- land had been beaten by over tivo touchdowns. Hut it had to be, because last year, Kelly Day was a fizzleg and Captain Marsh and his thundering herd were determined to make a success of it this year. This was the last home game, and by not letting the Oakland eleven score, C. ll. S. finished the home schedule without being scored upon. CLINTON 19, BRAZIL 0 lt had to be done, since there were about eight very determined fellows who were playing their last game. For the third year in succession our Tur- key-Day game was played in the mudg but this mud made no difference to Spike Kelly's men. Although our old rivals were very stubborn, Marsh and Cogan could not be deniedg and when they needed a little rest, Fred and Rini saw to it that Brazil did not advance the pig-skin. y W - 'fowf-Ny 1 J ff O- - x. After a week's practice the Kelly Kids went down to the Wiley Gym and took Garfield into camp by one points. They then proceded to run their record up to 13 straight wins. Spikes fighting basketeers lost their first game to Brazil in the Wabash Yalley Tourney, but hundreds of people can never be made to be- lieve that we really lost that game. Spike filed a protest concerning a goal made by XYeaver after the gun went off, and when it was taken before the board two voted against it, so it was left for the referee to decide and he de- cided that it was a good shot, although every coach at the tourney said the shot was made after the gun went off. This game was a tough break for Clinton, because it started a slump, which we did not come out of until the game before the Sectional Tourney. ln this tourney Clinton got going again and played some real basketball. The fighting Clintonians beat Montezuma in the final game to get the honor of going to the regionals. The Kelly Kids went over to Greencastle full of fight and determination and came back home regional champs, after beating Crawfordsville and nos- ing out Greencastle by one pomt in the finals. The following Thursday the Clintonians left for the Butler Field liouse to play Ft. XYayne in the opening game of the State Finals. Spike's fight- ing quintet took Ft. XVayne into camp by the score of Zl-20. Our next game was with Bedford, and although they were twice our size, we held our own with them the first half, but in the last half, the fighting Kelly Kids went down tc defeat. livery man loves a fighter. This was the end of the most successful basketball season Clinton lligh has ever had. Speaking for the basketball squad I want to say that we appreciate the good work and backing we got from the fans all during the season, and this meant a lot, especially when our spirits were low. Tiny Pierce was a great help to Spike, and also he has been developing a real second team which are mostly Sophomores. This means that C. lil. S. will again make a name for itself. .,-AM,-x :rx fi 1 QQSN W 'J J -N, N X gy -X tif -R ' x f E r . . Ti?.i,R -.,.ef.1 S H if Q, x ff fsfx X X ' 12,,,i.-.f-F--S' 1 -- - -if -s-f . .ff'! MANOEUVERS SWEATER MEN ,-A .... - , 4' FRED ANTONINI Big Fred, our all-state center, is one big boy of which Clinton High can be proud. Fred played center on the offense and tackle on the defense. During the whole season Fred didn't make more than six bad passes, and on the defense it would take a dozen adding machines to count the tackles he made. Spike will sure have some job finding a man to take his place. WAYNE BEVERIDGE The Big Blonde Blizzard from South 4th Street surely had a tough break by paying a rather long visit with brother Typhoid Fever. Bevy just got to play in the first game, but he showed that he was a real football player, and he would surely have had a berth on the valley team. MAX MALONE Mickey played guard, and held down his place in nice style. Mick car- ried hod all summer to get in shape and it proved to be a success. Mickey is just a Sophomore and he should be a valuable man before he graduates. WARREN STUMP Our Basketball Captain is one of the best back-guards Clinton High has had. Stumpie's hand has blocked many dangerous shots. Hoss Face has had a bad ankle since our game with Covington and has been slowed up a little. This is Stumpie's last year, and he has played some wonderful games for old C. H. S. CHICK SHANNON The Silver Tongued Urator of the Valley played running mate to Pooch and was a great asset to the team. When we were behind and our spirits were drooping, a couple of long shots donated by Chic brought the old fight back. Chic is a junior and will certainly strut his stuff next year. WAYNE FONCANNON Our pianist played floor guard and was certainly a great man. It was very seldom that Wayne didn't get the ball off the backboard. Spike had an awful time getting VVayne to shootg but when he did it, it proved to be worth the trouble. VVayne is a Senior, and he will be a great loss to our school. ROY COGAN The boy that had so much respect for Officer llutcll. is Refi Grange rm- Clinton. Although Hogan was slowed up by a bad ankle, he played some wonderful football this year. Roy didn't make the first all-state team. but he made the second team and that is a great honor. Hogan still has another vear.
