Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1981 volume:

They’ve faded new from wear and tear, The silly things remembered there. Every moment great and small, The times you’ve spent behind these walls. Shades of green and shades of gold. Fading new as they grow old. Bits of ribbon from games gone by. Old prom flowers wither and die. This is what you think of now. It all seems so clear somehow. As you’re walking up to shake his hand. The man that holds your whole life’s plan. Believe it now or maybe not. That all these things be soon forgot. Today’s the day you’ve lived for years. It’s over now, hear the cheers? Tomorrow soon you pack away. And live again a new today. Remember us the yesterdays. Live us now we are today. Dream your dreams, for they come true. Look, this day came true for you!! Ruberti DEDICATION Two of the people who have contributed so much to our lives over the past four years have been our two class advisors, Mrs. Anne Galeski and Mr. Ralph Ricci. It would be impossible to express in words the “THANKS” that they deserve. In 1977, they took on the task of organizing us as a class and began scheduling fund-raising events to help defray the cost of future class activities. During our sophomore year we became more accustomed to high school life and began to realize their devotion to our class. Junior year came and passed quickly, along with two of our major class functions; the Junior Homecoming and the Junior Prom. The great success of these two functions can be attributed to the help and planning of our advisors. Senior year arrived and we found ourselves in our final year within the walls of Clinton High School. Most of us were busy planning our future while Mrs. Galeski and Mr. Ricci were in the background planning our final class activities in which we would soon partake. The climax of our four years, graduation, went off extremely well, although most of us experienced mixed emotions, happiness in that we had completed our education within Clinton High School, but sadness in that it was only a memory for us now. Along with the recollections of our times at Clinton High, come fond memories of two special people, Mrs. Galeski and Mr. Ricci. In expressing our gratitude to you both for your help, guidance, dedication and friendship, we would like to say, “Thank You So Very Much!” We would also like to recognize Mr. Joseph Balvin for his patience, guidance, and understanding in helping in the formation of this yearbook. Without Mr. Balvin’s constant devotion and help, this book would not have been a success. JUNIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Timothy Murphy Holy Cross Prize Book Award Carolyn Jaeger Harvard Prize Book Award On Tuesday, May 20, 1980 thirty-six members of the Class of 1981 were inducted into the National Honor Society. Membership into this society is based upon the four cornerstones of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service, fulfilling the motto “Noblisse Oblige.” The Clinton Rotary Club who sponsors the local chapter, was in attendance along with the parents and friends of the new inductees. Representing the Class of 1981 were Carolyn Jaeger and Mary Cardoza, elected to the offices of Vice-President and Historian respec- tively. In reward for their academic excellence, Christine Carr, Carolyn Jaeger, and Timothy Murphy were presented with Prize Book Awards from Harvard University and Holy Cross College. The pledge to the flag in a foreign language, guest speakers. Spanish dancers, foods associated with European and Latin American countries, displays of foreign dress and customs all served to make us familiar with the ways of other nations. .Another annual event at our school was the School Fair, during which time each department placed exhibits throughout the school. Industrial arts projects, lab experiments, art displays, and a variety of other academic accomplishments were open to the general public for viewing. Many students have taken an interest in these two activities during the past four years making them both a huge success. SENIOR INTERCLASS DRAMATICS “Ada Gives First Aid’’ Ada Wilde . . . The week was vefy busy, as we engaged in a variety of Spirit Week Activities. This paved the way for our Homecoming football game against Marlboro High. Our fighting Gael football team was defeated by a score of 20 to 7, despite its “never say die” attitude throughout the game. Our spirited crew worked energetically to transform the cafeteria into a stunning Fall scene depicting our theme “We May Never Pass This Way Again.” The night passed quickly as we danced to the music of Glass Leaf. As the final minutes of the dance came to a close, the traditional Grand March was conducted. Shortly thereafter, the judges announced the Homecoming Queen and her court. Mary Murphy was chosen Queen. Her court con- sisted of Diane DeJesus, Patricia DiMeco, Yvonne Handel, Shari Lewin- ski, Mary Ruberti and Paula Vera. 1 111 IJmM FRESHMEN CLASS HISTORY On September 7,1977 the class of 1981 entered Clinton High School. Shortly, thereafter Principal John Gibbons appointed Mr. Ralph Ricci and Miss Anne Merriman as our advisors. At the end of September we elected the following as officers: President — Edward Peete, Vice- President — Shawn Moran, Secretary — Jane Santoro, and Treasurer — Amy Jewett. During the month of November, a new event was intro- duced called Spirit Week, in which the entire student body competed in a variety of events to determine which class was the MOST SPIRITED. Being quiet and reserved, the upperclasses completely overlooked the class of ’81 and its spirit. At the first Sprirt Week Rally the upperclasses sat in a state of shock as it was announced the Freshmen Class — Class of 198 1 was judged THE MOST SPIRITED. Another highlight of first semester at C.H.S. was cheer- ing our varsity football team to a Midland League Title, an undefeated season, and a birth in the Superbowl at Spring- field College. Our gallant Gaels were outscored by Min- nechaug 41 to 27, but displayed their typical spirited atti- tude through the contest. Under the direction of our advisors, our class began fund-raising projects that included bumperstickers, Christmas corsages, and a bake sale. Our success in these endeavors and the honor of being the MOST SPIRITED helped to build our confidence and class spirit that was to carry us for the remaining three years. At the end of our Freshman year, our Principal, Mr. John Gibbons announced his retirement and the students of C.H.S. held a special assembly to honor him for his many years of dedicated service to the town of Clinton. The Class of 1981 sincerely appreciated his efforts to ensure that we made a smooth transition into the rigors of high school life. ROLL ON GAELS SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY In September 1978 we entered C.H.S. confidently walk- ing the corridors as Sophomores. However, several changes had taken place. Mr. David Hazel was now our Principal and Mr. Leo Bachant was our Vice-Principal. In addition we now addressed Miss Merriman as Mrs. Gales- ki, as she had been married during the summer vacation. When class elections were held at the end of September we selected the following as class officers; President — David Moran, Vice-President — Shawn Moran, Secretary — Jane Santoro, Treasurer — Amy Jewett. As time passed. Spirit Week rolled around again and our class had to defend its title of MOST SPIRITED CLASS. Although the other classes were better prepared for the competition, we proudly chanted “We’re No. I’’ at the Spirit Week rally when Mr. Gerald Foley presented a plaque to our class which captured four first place awards. In addition, in November our class sponsored the annual Thanksgiving Day Show. On this occasion our class members and many other students displayed their singing and dancing talents. We especially remember the lyrics of the “Good Ship Lollipop” sung by a crew of Sophomores. As the New Year began, our class conducted a green stamp drive for a Pioneer stereo to be used as a raffle prize. Again the project succeeded as our class spirit reached new heights. A few weeks later we participated in interclass drama- tics competition selecting “Hilly Billy High Jinks” as our play. In this event the talented and experienced Senior Class prevailed as we learned that it would take a greater dramatic effort to win Interclass Dramatics competition. During the winter months our boys varsity basketball team had a successful season which was highlighted by participating in the Clark Tournament and reaching the finals of the District 3 Basketball Tournament. Our dream of the District 3 Title ended in the finals as the Ayer High School Panthers outscored our Gaels. As our Sophomore year came to a close, we eagerly looked forward to our Junior year and its traditional activi- ties — the Homecoming and the Prom. Before the school year ended in June, we selected the Sheraton-Tara in Framingham as the site of our Junior Prom. JUNIOR PROM MAY 9,1980 The evening of our Junior Prom, May 9,1980, was one that will be remembered by all. The set- ting of the Sheraton-Tara provided a most excit- ing atmosphere. It was a night full of starlight and romance for the girls as well as the boys. The Junior Prom is always dreamed of as being special, but ours was made exceptional by the dedication of two very important people in our lives: Mr. Ricci and Mrs. Galeski. Thanks to them, “We’ve Got Tonite” and many beautiful memories of it. We finally realized we were upperclassmen as our officers were handed the Senior Caps and Gowns. These cherished moments will linger in our memories forever. The court consisted of Christy Morrison, Cindi Salwa (Queen), Sharon Kuzmeski, Maria Etche- pare, Lois Bruso, Maureen Egan, and Mary Hazel. }V as«nf3 PRom VE GOT Tn}, ' .. ' J 1 I i ri ' X JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Our Junior year began with our class eagerly anticipat- ing the excitement of the year ahead, especially Home- coming Week and our Junior Prom. Being upperclassmen, we accepted the role as school leaders and elected as our officers: Jeff Frisch — President, Mary Ruberti — Vice- President. Jane Santoro — Secretary and Amy Jewett — Treasurer. The weeks passed rapidly and in preparation for Home- coming we chose as our theme: “We May Never Pass This Way Again . Our class coordinated Spirit Week activities and the Class of 1 98 1 reigned supreme as the Most Spirited Class for the third consecutive year. During the Fall the C.H.S. band, twirlers, and flag corps went to North Adams to appear in competition. It was a worthwhile experience, as it showed us the fine quality bands in our state. In April, the annual Interclass Drama- tics was held and our class selected “Disco Craze” for its presentation. Being more experienced we hoped to win, but our efforts were surpassed by the Seniors who won the competition. However, two members of our class were honored for their performances: Denise Foster was chosen Best Actress and Susan Kolifrath was selected Best Supporting Actress. The C.H.S. softball team provided the school with a championship team as it captured the Midland League Title, the nucleus of the team was composed of members of our class. The highlight of the school year was our Junior Prom at the Sheraton-Tara in Framingham, MA. It was a castle of dreams and we will long remember dancing to the music of “Glass Leaf’ who played our theme: “We’ve Got To- nite”. At graduation activities in June three members of our class were honored for their academic excellence: Christ- ine Carr, Harvard Book Award; Carolyn Jaeger, Harvard Book Award; Timothy Murphy, Holy Cross Book Award. As the year came to an end, we had recorded many pleasant memories and anticipated our Senior year and the many challenges ahead for us. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Our senior year at C.H.S. began with the realization that our golden moments as high school students were entering their final stage. In late September, we elected officers to lead us for the year ahead: Jeff Frisch, President; Shawn Moran, Vice- I President; Jane Santoro, Secretary; and Amy Jewett, Treasurer. Before we knew it. Spirit Week was upon us and the other classes were determined to end our domination of Spirit Week Festivities. Spirit Week activities ended with a rally on Halloween day and, as fate would have it, the Ghost of Halloween swiped our title as Most Spirited, as the Junior Class won the overall competition. In the next few weeks our thoughts turned to future events — our final mid-year exams, our Senior Hop, and the Interclass Dramatics program. The rigors of exam week in late January left us exhausted, but happy that high school mid-years were now a thing of the past. During February and early March we prepared for our Senior Hop and Interclass Dramatics competition. Our class selected “Imagine” for our Senior Hop theme which was held at Turner Hall in March. As was expected, it was a success. A few days before our Senior Hop, the Interclass Dramatics was held and our presentation was a comedy entitled, “Ada Gives First Aid”. Our dream of winning best play was not achieved, as the Juniors won. However, two of our cast members were honored with awards. Ann DeForge was selected Best Actress and Susan Kolifrath was selected Best Supporting Actress. The fourth quarter of our Senior year passed very rapidly and we completed our high school days with an exciting Senior Week that included Baccalaureate, a class trip to Oak’n-Spruce in Lee, MA., a class banquet at the White Cliffs in Northboro, and finally Graduation Day. And now we say good-bye, leaving this yearbook, the 1981 “Memorabilia,” as the official record of our life and times at Clinton High. SENIOR HOP “IMAGINE” MARCH 14,1981 On the evening of March 14,1981, we gathered together as a class once more for yet another memorable occasion, our Senior Hop. Turner Hall never looked so beautiful with the large shining “1981” casting its spell over all. We danced to the music of “Glass Leaf.” No other band could have e.xpressed our theme “Im- agine” in the same fashion. The evening was coming to an end, but was made special for seven girls. Theresa Halloran was chosen Queen, with Chris Herbert, Ann DeForge, Mary Cardoza, Rose Car- dillo, Michelle Goulet, and Lisa Innamorati as mem- bers of her court. The boys would not be outdone and chose Brian Larson as King, Bill Campbell, Pat Prendergast, Chuck Schwab, Jim Cooney, Joe Grimley, and Mike Ward as members of his court. The evening could not last forever and we finally realized this dance was one of our last major func- tions. We now looked for- ward as a class to our Senior Week Activities, which would culminate our high school career. CLUBS Student Government Day Delegate (Alt.) Gibbons It is impossible to speak of Mr. John J. Gibbons, Principal, and .Mr. Robert A. .Murphy, Chairman of the Math Department, until their respective retirements, without using superlatives. Both individuals manifest Author Gilbert Highet’s idea of a complete teacher as they were gifted with good memories, mas- tery of their subject matter, and most importantly, a sense of humor. Furthermore, each had a deep and wise understanding of human nature; enabling them to view students as socially valued V ' J Robert A. Murphy human beings, which resulted in a mutual respect between the parties involved. Hence, because of their strong dedication and ethical approach to teaching and to life, they gave the student a sense of personal worth and a vision of what he could contribute not only to himself but to others. Thank you, Mr. Gibbons and Mr. Murphy, for enriching our lives and may you both be blessed with long-life and much happiness throughout the coming years. 32 ADMINISTRATION Brendon J. Prior to the season many felt the Gaels would be unable to compete competitively in the Mid- land League due to their lack of size. However, the Gaels, led by their fourteen seniors, quickly dis- proved this theory with an opening game victory over rival Maynard High. The Gaels then jumped off to a 5-0 record before losing two straight games to Milford and Marlboro High Schools. However once again that Gael pride and spirit prevailed and the team went on to win their one remaining Midland League game before climaxing their season with a victory over St. Ber- nards on Thanksgiving Day. To the graduating seniors — Thanks for an exciting four years of high school football. To the future Gael football players — Remember, if you wear your green and gold with pride then no matter what the score may be, you’re on the winning side. Field Hockey Team posted a record which was the team’s best effort in recent years. The spirit and intensity with which we played carried us to a third place standing in the Midland League. Under the guid- ance of Jane Ann Weaver, our head coach, we were thoroughly prepared for all our contests, as well as learn- ing the values of teamwork and ded- ication. The hustle and desire of our co-captains, Anne Currier and Gail Giovannucci, were also valuable to our development as a team. Over the years we’ve learned that winning wasn’t everything, but the friendship and closeness we gained will be treasured forever. gl Co-Captains Anne Currier Gail Giovannucci B Patricia Gibbons Mary Jakubowicz Jayne Bailey Mary Murphy Mary Ruberti I 1 ) ! The team was paced by the spiking and serving skills of Seniors: Captain — Susan Kolifrath, Carol Grady, and Lois Bruso. Hard work and desire helped the team to qualify for the District 3 Tournament and to later partici- pate in the state qualifying Tournament at Waltham High School. Susan Kolifrath Carol Grady Lois Bruso Captain CROSS COUNTRY This year’s Cross Country Team compiled an 8-3 record. They were led by a veteran crew that included seven seniors: tri-captains Chris McGown, Tom O’Toole, and Rodney Stephens along with Brian Larson, Dave Moran, Tim Turn- bull and Phil Werth. The team worked hard and finished third in the highly competitive Midland League. The high- light of the season, however, came in the last meet of the season when the Gaels overwhelmed Rival Nashoba Regional. We would like to wish the future Cross Country teams good luck and thank our coach Jim Maatta- la for demonstrating the meaning of good sports- manship, hard work and dedication. We enjoyed performing at half-times at C.H.S. football games as well as parades and a com- petition. We sincerely thank Mrs. Leatrice Morrison for becoming our coach in Sept. 1979. With her help o ur corp improved considerably. For the 1980-81 season Christy Morrison and Diane McDonald were elected co-captains of our team. With further assistance from Mrs. Morri- son we were able to replace our old uniforms with bright new ones which added colorfully to our performance. As we performed our senior routine and presented roses to our coach on Thanksgiving day, it brought a great deal of sadness to think that it would be our last half- time performance. D. McDonald C. We enjoyed all the aspects of preforming with the band, from football games to graduation ceremonies, annual Christmas and Spring con- certs, to an Exchange concert with Westport as well as com- peting in competitions. They all being back happy memories. For the year 1980-81 we chose Timothy Turnbull as our president and Bruce Beyeler as vice president. Yet the Gaels did manage to beat their rival the Nashoba Chieftains for the third straight year. Even though the Gaels played to a losing tune through most of the season, they did manage to end their season on a winning note by beating the tough Hudson Hawks. This was the most exciting game the Gaels played during the season, a game in which no member of the team will ever forget. The senior members — Jeff Frisch, John Kittredge, Brian McAndrews, Shawn Moran and Eddie Peete, would like to extend their gratitude to their coaches Gerry Foley and Bernie Gaughan for the patience and support they’ve provided throughout the season. Brian McAndrews John Kittredge Shawn Moran Jeffrey Frisch Edward Peete GIRL’S BASKETBALL The 1980-81 Girl’s Basketball team finished their season with an overall record of 8-9, yet managed to achieve a .500 record in the tough Midland League. The determination and effort of this team was led by seniors Amy Jewett, Diane Hardy, and Tri-captains Kathy Sibya, Anne Currier and Lois Bruso. Under the guidance and supervision of Coach Sandy Borowiec, the girls demonstrated hard-work, dedication, and sportsmanship, along with their great effort and desire to win. n HOCKEY Although the Gael Bladesmen finished the season with a disappointing 2-16 record, they showed great determination and undying spirit. Untimely injuries proved to be the Gaels downfall, as almost every regular player missed a game or was forced to play injured. The graduating Gaels would like to extend their thanks to coaches Bob Shilalie and Vic Billings. The team was lead by a strong nucleus of ten seniors. They were Captain — David Lowe, Assistant Captains — Dan Baird and Pat Prender- gast, Peter Leger, David Moran, Jeffrey McDonald, Rodney Stephens, Carl Petricca, Joseph Grimley, and Joseph Droogan. Clinton’s season is perhaps best summed up in this state- ment by Coach Shilalie, “If these kids had as much talent as they have heart, we would be in the playoffs.” Daniel Baird David Lowe Patrick Prendergast David Moran Carl Petricca Jeffrey McDonald Rodney Stephens Joseph Grimley Joseph Droogan p SOFTBALL The 1981 softball team returned to the diamond this spring prepared to defend their title of Midland League Champions. Even though that position was to be shared by two other Midland League rivals, the Gaelettes did themselves jus- tice by proof of their 1 1-3 league record. This year’s team was composed of capable veterans with seniors, Lois Bruso, Mary Cardoza, Anne Currier, Pat Gibbons, Gail Giovannucci, Sue Kolifrath, Joanne Le- Blanc, and Kathy Sibya, leading the way. Under the guidance and direction of Coach Caesar DiTullio, the girls turned out a 16-3 regular season record and entered post- season play for the second consecutive year. , Thank you Coach DiTullio for your patience and under- 1 standing, and best wishes for continued success at Clinton High School. i Coach Caesar DiTullio 109 Mary Cardoza Anne Currier Lois Bruso -sr- i JV. Susan Kolifrath Patricia Gibbons Gail Giovannucci Joanne LeBlanc _4. s TRACK This year’s track team led by tri-captains Tom O’Toole, Carl Petricca, and Tim Turnbull did well individually, but it was not enough to carry the team to a successful season. O’Toole was 4th in the Districts in the 880, Petricca 5th in the Districts in the 330 low hurdles, and Turnbull came through placing 1st in the Midland League Meet and 2nd in the Districts in the 440. The tri-captains showed true leadership to the rest of the team along with the following six seniors: David Angevine, Jim Cooney, Joe Droogan, Brian Larson, Chris McGown, and Andy Rivera. They would all like to say Thanks to Mr. Cataldi and wish next year’s team an abundance of success. James Cooney 1 i Thomas O’Toole Carl Petricca 1 BASEBALL Eddie Peete Captain It was a spirited year for the Gael baseball team led by seniors, Eddie Peete and Shawn Moran. Under the leadership of Coach Bemie Gaughan, this year’s Gael team just missed the .500 mark with a record of 9 wins and 10 losses. Every year seems to be improving for Coach Gaughan, and according to seniors, Peete and Moran, that elusive dream of a Midland League Championship might not be too far in the future. Shawn Moran l TENNIS Although the tennis teiuu did not gidn any victories this season, they idways had a winning attitude and demonstrated gocxJ sportmanship. The senior mem- bers. John Grivakis, Michelle Goulet, Yvonne Hand- el, John Maloney, and Carolyn Rockel, were appre- ciative and thankful to the coaching of Dan Young, who greatly improved their tennis skills throughout this past season. They shared many good times with the other mem- bers and wish the best of luck to next year ' s team. John Grivakis Yvonne Handel 116 Carolyn Rockel John Maloney Michelle Goulet GOLF Senior Jeff McDonald led a young C.H.S. golf team which improved throughout the season. They high- lighted their season with a surprise win over an Algonquin team which had decisively defeated Clinton ear- lier in the year. At the end of the season, Jeff McDonald, along with junior Jim Donohue and freshman Kevin Burg- winkle represented our school in the District III Golf Competition held at the Oxford Country Club. iH Jeff McDonald 119 AWARDS DANIEL BAIRD: Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving Day Football Game — Best Lineman; Youth of the Month; Telegram Gazette Student Achievement Award; Com- mended Student in National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Competition; Honorable Mention All-Star in North Cen- tral Massachusetts Hockey Conference; The American Legion Award. The Reverend Richard E. Keville, Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church gave the invocation, address, and benediction. While gathered together for this solemn ceremony, we finally real- ized that our days together as a class were now numbered. We were determined to make these last times with one another the most memorable. CLASS TRIP June 2, 1981 On June 2, we traveled to Oak n’ Spruce in Lee, Massachusetts to take part in one of our many activities during Senior Week. Though the day started with gloomy weather it wasn’t enough to dampen our spirits, as we enjoyed many activities which included softball, swim- ming, tennis, golf, volleyball, frisbee, horseshoes, and basketball. Exhausted from the day’s events, we reluctantly boarded the buses with many wonderful memories never to be for- gotten. unfm ft f- m . SENIOR CLASS BANQUET June 4, i98i On June 4, 1981 the Senior Class boarded the school buses and headed for the White Cliffs Restaurant in Northboro. The beautiful white mansion stood on top the hill awaiting the arrival of the Senior Class. When we arrived, we entered the beautiful banquet room. It wasn t long beiore Glass Leaf began to play and the dance floor filled with excited dancers, who danced the night away. j The highlight of the evening was when our class officers presented Mr. Kicci and Mrs. Galeski their gifts. They had earned them by their four years of dedication and love which we will always remember. . r • • • • The evening ended with Glass Leaf singing our class song and all of us joining m. With tears of joy, the tired crowd once again boarded the buses and headed for home. . . • • 11 4 We all agreed the evening ended too soon but the glistening memories will stay with us forever. V. . j giaf MMUi u n WM r a B|[H ' m GRADUATION June6, 1981 The culmination of our high school career finally came on Saturday, June 6, 1981. God didn’t totally shine on us that day, so we had to use the Town Hall facilities. However, noth- ing could spoil our happiness as we looked forward to that hard-earned diploma, and our future dreams. As we sang our class song we finally realized that “Our Time Had Come.’’ Like children leaving their parents, we had to leave our advi- sors. We had to enter this new world on our own. Thanks to you, Mr. Ricci and Mrs. Gales- ki, we are prepared. We, the Class of 1981, promise that you, our parents, teachers, and community, will always be proud of us. CLASS COLORS Maroon and Silver CLASS ADVISORS Mrs. Anne E. Galeski Mr. Ralph J. Ricci “THE TIME HAS COME” Time has come for Graduation And we are sad to say, we must go and face the future after graduation day. We have mem’ries that last forever. It’s hard for us to leave. Some say we are just like flowers and we, their only seeds. It’s the heart afraid of breaking that never wants to leave. It’s the dreams that have been waiting to finally have a chance. We’re the ones who will be taking the future in our hands. And the class of ’81 will take its final stand. When the days have been too lonely and the road has been too long. Then you’ll think success is only for the lucky and the strong. Just remember in the Fall, far beneath the Autumn’s leaves, lies the seeds that with the sun’s love in Spring, we’ll start to grow. Egan, 1981
