SPIRIT OF 76 It’s a time for us. It belongs to our generation. It’s today; it’s yesterday; it’s tomorrow . . . We make the moves. We call the plays. We make it happen and whenever it happens, It happens well. THE TIME FOR US The time for us Has come to pass, But even so We’ll always know That it couldn’t last. And our four years, Though they’ve been great, Must now end. But we’ll remember our good times and friends. The time for us Has come at last, And though it has It’s come too fast. Now as we leave, The memory stays. It lingers on Though we have gone Our separate ways. Fond memories Of Clinton High Will not die. Although we have to leave And say good-bye. l |Wv r 14T Mil 1 |:.|b mr • yip ES BP . jmG m 1 4 i Scl iod 4A FLASHBACK!!! The Class of 1976. Our high school experience over — but not forgotten. As we look back on our years at Clinton High, we think of the major events which we experienced together and the times of joy and sadness, frustration and relief, laughing and crying. So many people — so many emotions — so many memories. The pictures and words are few, but the memories unlimited. We learned from experience, from others, and from ourselves. We look back on how far we have trav eled, and realize a great sense of pride and power as seniors, as students, and as people. September 1972. What lies ahead of us down these seemingly lonely corridors: new friends, great excitement, unfamiliar rules and regulations, confusion and frustration, overcome only by antic- ipation. How long would it take us to become aware of our new surroundings, and buckle down . and study in preparing us for our future??? ISM 1 It didn’t take us long to adjust to our new situation and soon we were mingling together, becoming friends, only to be interrupted by the sound of the bell. And the big shocker came when we had our first class meeting and we were told $40 had to be scraped up for class dues. How would we ever do it? . . . We had only just begun. JUNIOR HOMECOMING On Saturday, November 9, 1974, The Junior Homecoming — “A TIME FOR US” — was held in the cafeteria of the Clinton High School to the music of SUITE. Despite a 10-6 loss to a tough Marlboro team, our spirits were not dampened, and a good time was had by all. Helen Mc- Namara was chosen queen and her court consisted of Mary O’Malley, Teresa Murphy, Jean DiLorenzo, Jean Praderio, Nan Gonyea, and Susan Cataldi. BMW On Friday, May 29, 1975, the Junior Prom — “PRECIOUS AND FEW — was held at the Sheraton Tara in Framingham. We danced all night to the music of FATE. The highlight of the evening came with the selection of Donna Sadowski as the queen, and her court of Helen Mc- Namara, Mary Ellen Hatstat, Carol Cooney, Robyn Gallant, Nan Gonyea and Jean Praderio. THANKSGIVING DAY GAME It was the beginning of the game, but the end of the season. And what a season it was. The ’75-76 football team brought much excitement to it ' s fans that season. Turkey Day was no exception. We came up on top of Gardner by a whopping score of 28-14. At the conclusion of the game, Dave Despotopulos, Mike Moran and Phil Donnini were awarded trophies for their outstanding play. Let us not forget our cheerleaders and twirlers for the fine job they did all season long. They put on a final spectacular show. A fiting end to an unforgettable season. T ' On Saturday, February 21, 1976, the Senior Hop — “COULD IT BE MAGIC — was held at I urner Hall in Clinton. That night we danced once again to the music of SUITE. The big moment came with the selection of the queen and her court. Crowned queen was Susan MacDonald and chosen as her court were Ann In- namorati, Patty Rivers, Beverly Burton, Sue DeBlois, Helen McNanara and Penny Nieves. It was a new and different journey — one we would look back upon for the rest of our lives. To start us off on our journey, we had Jim Innamorati as our president, Helen McNamara as vice- president, Jean Praderio as secretary and Patty Guidi as treasurer. Together with them and our class advisors, we held a few class meetings and planned projects for fund raising. We held dances, a bake sale, and sold “bargain boxes.” We soon became adjusted to our new environment and we were on our way through CHS — a journey in which we would experience joy, sadness, triumph and frustration. A journey through time . . . through a most important part of our lives. SOPHOMORE YEAR We returned to CHS for our sophomore year — a year when we would grow closer together in friendship and in strength as the sands continued to flow. Paul Devaney, elected President, was the only change in our class officers. We began to make our presence felt as we became involved in various activities such as sports, clubs, and for the first time — interclass dramatics. “The Ghost Wore White” was our presenta- tion with Joyce Constant as “Jennie Conwell”, Debbie Murphy as “Mandy”, Dave Doss as “James Reynolds”, Jane Domenico as “Edna Conwell”, Geri Valenkamph as “Charlotte Conwell”, Chuck Dorazio as “Junior Conwell”, Marlene Conger as “Mrs. Mason”, and Ellen Gallagher as our “Lady in White”. What a fun evening we all had!!! For class projects, we held a dance and car wash, and we formed our Ring Committee. We drew up a special design for our ring this year — in addition to the Galloping Gael, we had the Liberty Bell with the inscription, Spirit of 76”. Yes, we wanted to tell the world that “76” was our year, our class, and that in our hearts, we were the best! 30 Austin F. Sheridan In memory of Austin F. Sheridan, (1924-1973), Superintendent of Schools, a man of wisdom, poise, reason and calm jud- gement, we dedicate these words:. It has been said that “the most essential thing in the work of education is that sympathetic touch of life, on life. It is by that fine process that personality is developed, matured, and enriched in all the younger candidates for human existence. Mr. Sheridan had that touch, and we thank him for it. JUNIOR YEAR Our second try at interclass dramatics competition met with some success as Jane Domenico received Best Sup- porting Actress for her role as “Mrs. Stone” and Carol O’Malley an Honorable Mention as “Lila Sue Amory” in “Here Comes the Groom” on December 5, 1974. Other cast members were Dave Slauenwhite, “Roger Stone”, Joyce Constant, “Emily Barker”, Wayne Wollerman, “George Barker”, Debbie Murphy, “Aunt Rutherford”, Chuck Dorazio as “Buzz Gregory”, Geri Valenkamph as “Mrs. Barker”, and Dave Doss as the baker. “A TIME FOR US The sands of time flowed towards our first big event as juniors, our Homecoming Game and Dance. There was much anticipation, excitement and planning as we prepared for the big day. Gown- buying, ticket-purchasing and decorating were common oc- curances. Despite a 10-6 defeat against a tough Marlboro team, our spirit was not dampened that evening. The stage was set, the lights were dimmed and the first tunes of music started; we were finally here feeling a togetherness of silent spirit. There was hope in each heart as we started the promenade around: floating colors, mixed whispers and expectations abounded as we waited for the climax of our dream world. We all felt the winners’ happiness and consoled our sighs of unattainment. As we watched the Oueen and her court at half-time the follow- ing Saturday, there was still a faint, warm flow in our hearts and minds. It will always be a time to remember, a time to cherish, A TIME FOR US. 34 - 35 A “PRECIOUS AND FEW It seems as though the sands were flowing faster during our junior year, and soon we were thinking about first formal, the Junior Prom. As the girls went shopping for beautiful spring gowns, the guys took pride and pleasure in their first tuxedos. There is always something very special about a prom — something very enchant- ing. As we neared the “Dream Castle”, the Sheraton Tara, a sense of bewilderment swept over us; but as we saw each other together again for another memorable event, we were content and relieved. We ate and danced our way through the night, building towards the two big moments of the occasion — the exchanging of caps and gowns among the senior and junior class officers, and finally the selection of the Queen and her court. Suddenly it was over, and little did we realize that we were peacefully moving to the soft sands and dim lights once again. This ended yet another of the PRECIOUS AND FEW moments that we would share together. 36 H i ;• ■ ' . ' % e sands -ic ancuuy anticipating ition. Despite the fact that they managed only a 5-5 record, they deserved all the praise and accolades that came their way. They easily could have gone 9-1, and they could easily have gone all the way in the Midland League. Anyone who ever saw them play and followed their progress over the season knows that to be a fact. We have reason to be proud of our team — and their coaches, for a job well done. 9 13 Southbridge Clinton 14 Opp. 12 9 20 Maynard 18 19 10 3 Hudson 8 30 10 11 St. Bernard ' s 28 14 10 20 Shrewsbury 14 6 10 25 West boro 18 13 11 1 Milford 26 27 1 1 8 Marlboro 21 25 11 15 Algonquin 7 13 11 29 Gardner 28 13 90 John M attiace M ike Moran r JB Rick Morgan Mark Nugent Mark O ' Toole Billy Seward Brian Taylor Bob Wagner Paul Wood 91 CHEERLEADERS TWIRLERS 94 Pam Gage Carol O ' Malley The Clinton High School Band, they who have devoted so much time practicing and ap- pearing for football games, concerts, rallies and graduations, under the direction of Gregory Depp, are truly a great asset to Clinton High School. The big race of the season was home against Milford, where the Gaels upset them and stopped their 3-year-old unbeaten string. Their 3 wins — 6 losses — 5 ties record was very deceiving, as every score was very close; every game nip and tuck all the way. This team was special both on and off the field. Their dedication and togetherness was felt and appreciated by all, especially by their coach, Val McCarthy. Although not copping the Midland League Title, it was nip and tuck down to the very finish of the season. The Gaels compiled a fine 14-5 regular season record, and once again went to the Clark Tournament, reaching the finals and eventually losing at the hands of Algonquin. Then came District 111 , where the Gaels once again played superb and inspired ball. Although they lost in the finals to an extremely strong St. Peter ' s team, the Gaels proved to everyone, their worth as a ball club. Their over- all record was 17-7. Once again, thanks to Coaches Foley and Gaughan for a job well done. Robbie Ryll 103 Dan V etras GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Captain Despite a rather disappointing season, the girls’ basketball team, led by senior captain Deb Murphy, played strong, inspired, and dedicated ball. Their spirits were never dam- pened, and went all out for each game. We credit them for their fine and never-ending ef- forts all season long; and we thank Coach Val McCarthy for the fine job she has done with the girls. Debbie Murphy ICE HOCKEY Dan Comerford Dan McAuliffe Mike Giansanti Bill C asasanto 106 Dave McDonald George McNamara CHS continued its hockey program with successful intramural competition. There were three teams playing each other this year, and there were also several exhibition games against other schools. All participants gained valuable experience and playing time, which will be of the utmost importance with the formation of a var- sity squad for next season. Seniors who participated for the last time were: David McDonald, David O’Toole, Dick Sontag, Mike Moran, Kevin Shaughnessy, Jim O’Donnell, Danny Comerford, Bill Casasanto, Mike Giansanti, Danny McAuliffe, and George McNamara. felt! TRACK The track team continued to have great success in the 1976 season, and it also sported a new look; it marked the initial year for a girls’ squad. As usual, many records were broken and some superb individual performances were given by Don O ' Malley in the triple and high jumps, Mike Moran in the 100 yard dash, and Mark O ' Malley in the intermediate hurdles. Tom Kulis in the javelin, Brian Taylor in the shot put and discus, and Dan McAuliffe in the mile also had a fine season. Assistant Coach Angel Nieves Head Coach Bernie Gaughan BASEBALL After a slow start, the Gael baseball team put it together as a team and started to play respectable ball. Even though they lost some close games in which luck played a factor in the outcome, the effort was still there and that “never-say-die” attitude, which seems to characterize all CHS sports, was felt by all. We stand behind them for their valiant efforts shown throughout the season. 112 Coach Connor and seniors David Despotopulos Jim Innamorati Bill Casasanto Chuck Kaiser Rick Morgan ¥ f lm Tom Lavelle Mark Nugent Dan Vetras Bob Wagner SOFTBALL CHS Girl ' s Softball team, led by Captain Ellen Gallagher and seniors Ann Sheridan, Patty Guidi, and Lucy Garcia, gave another fine performance and played some inspired softball. Even though their record was on the losing half, they brought much excitement, honor, and credit to the spirit of Clinton High sports. 114 Lucy Garcia Ann Sheridan Patty Guidi Ellen Gallagher. Captain m TENNIS Coach Boroweic and seniors 1976 marked the first year of a boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis team at CHS. The team met with little success in its debut, but the quality of play was always tops. Wayne Wollerman Geri Valenkamph Dickie Sontag GOLF M ike Giansanti The 1976 edition of the golf team had another fine season under the di- rection of new head coach Bob Cooney. Besides the excellent performance of seniors Mike Giansanti and Mike Powers, Clinton added a little “girl power” this season, with the presence of senior Donna Sadowski. M ike Powers Donna Sadowski Coach Cooney and seniors The complete story of our se- nior year has yet to be told. We will now look back upon those memorable events that we experienced together during our final phase of our journey. You remember our last attempt at dramatics? our last big dance together?- what about that final, all-important week that we had waited so long for: bac- the class trip, the banquet, and graduation it- f? It came and passed too quickly ... SENIOR PLAY December 11, 1975 — our last Interclass Dramatics Competition. This year. “A Date For Bobby Sox” was our play and Geri Valenkamph was our leading lady, por- traying “Bobby Sox”. Wayne Wollerman was her first-time date, “Harold”, Jane Domenico was her sister “Margie”, Debbie Murphy was her mother “Mrs. Hanna”, and “Mr. Hanna” was played by George McNamara. Geri was awarded the Best Actress of the evening, and even though we didn ' t win Best Play, we gave it our all and had a lot of fun. We now also realized that time was growing short, as the sands of time slipped through faster and faster. “COULD IT BE MAGIC? As we look back on our Senior Hop, we realize how much we matured over the past two years, and how we conducted ourselves and respected one another. We were well aware that it was now February, and the sands of time were running out on us. Therefore, we were drawn ever so closer together as one. It could be said that the whole is gathered as one in our senior year — and what could prove our point more than the Hop? There were still traces of nervousness as we entered Turner Hall that night, but these were lost as the loud music, distant laughs and ex- cited speech overcame us. We relaxed and enjoyed what was to be our last big dance together, and we still felt all the excitement of the crowning of the queen and her court. Where did the time fly??? We were so caught up in this won- derful evening, that we felt a togetherness not expressed in words, and we found ourselves asking: COULD IT BE MAGIC??? 120 II BACCALAUREATE The beginning of the Senior Week activities started on Sunday, June 6, with the Baccalaureate exercises held in the Clinton High School Auditorium. The Reverend Martin, of the Trinity Lutheran Church, was our guest speaker. He spoke of the world and how each one of us graduates had to work to make it a better place to live. As we sang our class song, we realized that our four years at Clinton High were finishing up, and a tear or two filled our eyes. After the exercises, we gathered in the cafeteria for breakfast . . . one of the last times we’d be together. CLASS TRIP On Wednesday morning, June 9, the Class of ' 76 boarded the buses for the Oak n ' Spruce Resort in South Lee, Massachusetts. The weather was on our side — hot and sunny. After arriving around 10:00, we enjoyed all the recreational facilities open to us, such as swimming, golf, tennis, softball, horseback riding, volleyball and flying. Whether roasting in the saunas or floating in the pool, everyone really enjoyed themselves. Even the food was super and plentiful! After lunch, we continued our golf games and tennis matches until 6:30, when at last we got Mr. Garrity away from his pool game and boarded the buses for Clinton . . . Another day was gone! CLASS BANQUET The next day, we were ready to board the buses for our class banquet. We arrived at the White Cliffs in Northboro at 5:00 and had a really great meal. Then we danced all night to the music of the Ed Lucci Band. They did a great job and every- one got into the act when they played the famous Greek March. As we presented our advisors with gifts to show our appreciation and gratitude, we realized this was the last time they ' d be addressing us as a whole class. We now knew how much we’d miss them. We also realized that this was our last time together until graduation. Our journey was almost over. rk J -iiS GRADUATION Here it was! June 12, 1976 — Graduation Day — the end of our journey through CHS was about to unfold. What a beautiful day it was at Fuller Field: sunny with a cool breeze — a perfect day, a fitting end to a wonderful four years together; a day that we ' d remember for the rest of our lives! From the opening march to receiving our diplomas and to when we sang our class song, “The Time For Us,” each one of us felt sad and sorry that we’d never see some of our fellow graduates again. Our four years at CHS truly were a time for us. “I walk on untrodden ground. — Washington. After we watched Mike Moran present our class gift to Steve Soldi, and then heard Mr. Bailey address us for the last time, four of our fellow students, Joanne Gadomski, Dave Slauenwhite, Geri Valen- kamph, and Wayne Wollerman spoke to us about “The Spirit of 76” and how we shall carry it into our future. “A most successful life we can all lead, if only we stand guard over our treasure.” The “Spirit of ' 76 will become the Spirit of America, which will never die as long as there is still one person who can honestly say, “I care. “I have but one lamp by which my future is guided, and that is the lamp of experience.” — Henry. 129 hli . w : Graduation was over, and as we marched off the field, tears of pride, joy and sadness filled some of our eyes. After waiting so long for this big moment, it was now hard to believe that our four years of high school were gone. We were suddenly aware of the fact that the time had flown by too quickly, and we found ourselves grasping for fond memories and past dreams. As we said our good-byes and good-lucks to one another and wished each other well in the future, we realized that the hour glass had emptied and it was now time to turn it over and begin a new life . . .
