FRESHMAN YEAR Look out high school, here we are!!!! Yes, here indeed we were bouncy, bubbly, innocent, swaggering freshmen all set for our grand debut in the high school circuit. But where was the fanfare? “Whaddya mean we’re just another bunch of dumb freshmen??? We’ll show . . . and “show them’’ was exactly what we proceeded to do . . . just how dumb we really were. First point of business was correcting this situation ... we had elections. Chris Lavelle emerged as class president, Meg Ball as vice-president, Brigid Ball as secretary, and Joe Daniels was handed the first whip and chair in preparation for the battle with that fanged monster the class treasury. Ah, poor innocents! A four-year battle had just begun, with the “fanged monster” taking us by surprise right from the start. It all began the day we were herded into the auditorium. (Hear that. Senior? They want us . . . nyaaah!!”) 20

Dauntless, we sprang back from this initial shock with renewed vigor. We held out first dance. No further comment. Let’s not degrade ourselves too much, though. We had our good points. The French Club was created (under the direction of Mr. Edward Philbin), and a gastronomical miracle occurred we survived our first French Club banquet. Bruce Lynskey, Judy Grealis, Karen Paulino, and Carole Janda made our acting debut in “Up the Down Staircase,’’ and a different star was born. Brendon Burgwinkle made the varsity bas- ketball team under coach Tom O’Connor. Despite our young Ignorance, we took our first stumbling steps that year, and discovered we could walk.
