What we expected as entering freshmen has now been realized and we are pleased with enduring memories. We proudly elected our class officers, Charles Despotopulos- President, Roberta Bassett-Vice President, Leslie Laverdure-Secretary, and James Regonini-Treasurer, and of them we expect nothing less than the job Lyndon Johnson was doing in Washington. Our few and far between dances, all the current sporting events, and our blossoming social lives deeply affected us, as not even Ed White’s famous space walk could. We followed the fashion trends, sang “The Green Beret” and “Yesterday”, longed to be Seniors, and remained throughout con- scious of the War on Poverty and the Viet- namese crisis. Soon the Sophomore year was upon us and we already began to wonder where the time went. 49 With our ascendance from the lowest rung on the ladder came an increasing awareness and maturity. We pondered our own values as we saw picketers and draft card burners and sought an answer to world problems. We acted our interclass Dramatics with the same skill shown by Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl”, lived through “Doctor Zhivago” and sympathized with “Georgy Girl.” We became regulars on High Street, sang openly “Yellow Submarine”, and were fascinated by “Valley of the Dolls.” W ' e elected our class officers, Timothy Dziczek-President, Leslie Laverdure-Vice-President, Donna O’Malley-Secretary, and James Regonini- Treasurer. Mid-years came and went and before we real- ized it. another year had slipped through our grasp, but now our contributions such as a Homecoming Queen, Beverly Fine, had boosted our morale and our claim to Clinton High. “Juniors already?” now became a common question and as upperclassmen we played the part well. The Vietnam war deepened, President Johnson dropped in popularity, open violence broke out on cam- puses across the country and as a split became increas- ingly evident in our society we were plagued by our elder’s comment, “The future depends on you!” 50 The Galloping Gaels rolled to their most successful season in a few too many years, and our jubilation carried over into all that we did. We elected our officers, William Burgwinkle-President, Leslie Laverdure-Vice President, Beverly Fine-Secretary, and J ames Regonini-Treasurer with confidence and enthusiasm and as prom planning began we soon realized our own importance. Our own track team excelled, our National Honor Society members were elected, and “Sgt. Pepers Lonely Hearts Club Band” became a household term. On May 10 we held our junior prom, “The Impossible Dream” and under the enchanted skies of Camelot our queen, Nancy Bekier was crowned — more beautiful than any Arthur’s Guin- evere. We finished off the year with a flair worthy only of the Class of 1969 and awaited apprehensively our Senior year. Senior year had finally arrived! Suddenly a school day became an experience and we were kept busy with pictures, yearbook and football. We struggled through our last College Boards, never missed “Laugh-In”, and watched anxiously the world situation. All the spirit of Richard Nixon’s drive to the White House was recapped in our election of officers - Peter Pender-President, Leslie Laverdure-Vice President, Roberta Bassett-Secretary, and James Regonini-Treasurer. We watched tensely the Paris Peace Talks and our own class finances and delighted in our final victory over Nashoba. 51 Now these years are at their end, but the things they stood for can never be forgotten. . . . rallies on Friday . . . haddock sticks . . . basement slips . . . “Love Is Blue” . . . “O.K. The couples entered their dream world by crossing over a magic bridge, which was appropri- ately decorated with flowers of blue, pink, and yellow. A castle could be seen in the distance and banners of different colors with silver shields also adorned the walls. Silver stars spelled out our theme across the wall and golden crowns fell from the skies. 78 A large crystal ball twisted and turned merrily to capture each delicate crown and reflect its glitter over the dancing couples. It was in this setting, and to the music of THE COMMODORES, that more than 120 couples danced the night away. At 10:30 P.M., the Grand March, capa- bly led by Mr. Robert A. Murphy, was conducted. Senior Class officers relinquished their caps and gowns to their successors from the Junior Class. After moments of anticipation, the announcement was made and for our queen, Nancy Bekier, the Impossible Dream came true. Chosen as the members of her court were Bonnie Azud, Valerie Kronopolus, Maureen O’Toole, and Cheryl Zelent. As the last song played and couples began to leave, we knew we would never forget the night of our Impossible Dream. THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM 79 SENIOR HOP On February 8, 1969, the senior class held the annual Hop. The cafeteria was gaily decorated with royal blue cupids and white hearts, which twirled above the heads of the couples as they danced. The mood was set by the music of Pat Serro and his orchestra, as they played the theme of the Hop, “Love is Blue.” It was romantic, exciting and then Beverly Fine was chosen “Queen of the Hop.” She happily ascended to her throne to join the members of her court, Michele Gonyea, Linda McLaughlin, Roberta Manning, and Francine Gadomski. Everyone- there knew that this was a special night, one which they would not soon forget. “Little girl all the world is yours to- night, My Queen of the Senior Hop . . . ” 80 81 HIT PARADE Wishin’ and Hopen’ . . . for a date for the prom Sock it to me . . . The Gaels finished with a record of 6-3 and the season was filled with exciting and sus- pense-filled games. The Class of 1969 would like to extend our praise to Head Coach Owen Kilcoyne and the assistant coaches Bernard Gaughan, Joseph Garofoli, James Peete, Thomas O’Connor, and Athletic Director David Hazel for a job well done. PETER’S - 12 In the 1968 opener St. Peter’s High invaded Fuller Field before a cheering crowd of 3,500. The Guardians scored two quick T.D.’s and were hard pressed to preserve a slim 12-6 victory. Early in the second period Paul Fadgen scooted to right end and raced 39 yards for our only T.D. This proved to be the only score Clin- ton could muster and at the gun the score read 12 - 6 . Despite the loss, Clinton proved to be among the best in the county by holding the highly favored Guardians scoreless in the second half. CLINTON - 15 WACHUSETT - 13 The Gaels evened their record against the Mountaineers by hang- ing on to a slim 1 5-13 victory. Wachusett scored early but the Gaels came right back on a 76 yd. drive climaxed by Paul Fadgen’s 4 yd. plunge. Walt McNamara’s kick split the uprights and the Gaels led 7-6. In the second quarter Pete Pender blocked a punt which set up a Larry Bashaw-Vic Lugo T.D. pass, and they again combined for the extra points. The Gaels held off the scrappy Mountaineers and preserved their 15-13 victory. 86 CLINTON - 20 HUDSON - 12 The Gaels again had their first period woes, but in the second period Pete Pender again blocked a punt and ran 39 yards to set up a T.D. pass from Larry Bashaw to Paul Fadgen. In the third quarter the fired up Gael marched 73 yds. and scored on a 3 yard smash by Jon Breed. Walt Mac’s kick made it 14-6. Bob Seymour added the final T.D. late in the third quarter to set the final score at 20-12. CLINTON 33 NOTRE DAME - 6 After the Gaels were stopped on the 1 yard line, Austy Sheridan recovered a fumble which set up a touchdown by Paul Fadgen on a smash through the left side. An interception by Pete Pender set up the Gaels second score by Paul Fadgen on a pass from Larry Bashaw. This upped the score to 12-0. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled and Pete Pender recovered. The score read 19-0 after a Bashaw to Lugo touchdown pass and Walt McNamara’s kick. After a scoreless third quarter, Larry Bashaw passed to Paul Fadgen who raced into the end zone for the T.D. A pass from Bashaw to Lugo on extra points left the score at 27-0. Following a Notre Dame touchdown, Gary Notaro sped 32 yds. for the final Clinton touchdown. At the gun the score read 33-6 Clinton. 87 CLINTON - 7 ST. BERNARD’S - 12 St. Bernard’s took command late in the first half with a touchdown score. It wasn’t until late in the third quarter that the score was tied with a pass to Vic Lugo, from the 1 yd. line. A McNamara extra point put Clinton ahead 7-6. With only 3 minutes left St. Bernard’s scored a touchdown to win 12-7. CLINTON - 8 MAYNARD - 27 Following a scoreless first period, May- nard exploded for two quick touchdowns and at half time led 14-0. The Gaels first and only score came on a pass play from Larry Bashaw to Vic Lugo. Bashaw then scooted around the left end for the two points and the gap was narrowed to 14-6. Maynard came back and scored their final two touchdowns to end the game. The final score stood at 27-8. 88 CLINTON - 20 MARLBORO - 0 Bouncing back from two previous defeats, the Gaels bombed the Panthers 20-0. Jon Breed repeatedly cracked through the Marlboro line for short gains and finally bulled over from the 1 yard line. Walt McNamara’s punt upped the score to 7-0. In the third quarter Chucky Despotopulos galloped to the end zone for a 50 yard touchdown. Walt McNamara’s kick was good. Late in the third quarter Jon Breed plunged again for another touchdown to set the final score at 20-0. CLINTON - 25 MILFORD - 15 Paul Fadgen got the Gaels on the score board early as he took the kick off and raced 75 yards for the T.D. Walt McNamara added the P.A.T. Paul Fadgen’s recovered fumble set up Jon Breed’s 1 yard crack through the center of the Milford line. This along with Walt Mac’s kick upped the score to 14-0. Pete Pender’s blocked punt set up a 15 yard field goal by Walt McNamara, and the score stood at 1 7-7. Larry Bashaw and Vic Lugo again combined for the touchdown and the extra points to run the score to 25-15. 89 THE GALLOPING GAELS CLINTON 22 NASHOBA - 8 The Gaels continued their four year mastery of the Chieftains with a thrilling fourth period rally. Chucky Despotopulos scored our first touchdown as he simply outran the Nashoba defenders, and at the half Clinton was out in front 7-0. In the fourth quarter, Quarterback Larry Bashaw sliced off tackle for 11 yards and a touchdown. Walt McNamara’s second P.A.T. brought the score to 14-0. The Chieftains scored on a broken pass pattern and the gap was closed 14-8. Paul Fadgen, as he has all year, came through in the clutch to ice the victory for Clinton with another T.D. Peter Pender was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player for his defensive efforts and his great offensive blocking, to add an even greater flavor to our last victory. 90 mF A great honor given to our football team was the choosing of four of our players to the Midland Leagu e All-Stars. Sir John Suckling “1 have a dream today ... 1 have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all the flesh shall see it together. Tins is our hope . . . With this faith we shall be able to work together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.” Martin Luther King ROBERT F. KENNEDY His life was so gentle, and the elements so mixed in him, that nature might stand on its feet and say to all the world: This was a man. William Shakespeare It was a beautiful life so unfairly brief but so incredibly full, marked by sorrow but overflowing with joy, too short to do all that he wanted to do, but long enough to leave more lasting legacies to all mankind than a legion of lesser men could have achieved at twice his age.” Theodore Sorensen 126 Mr. Walsh — whose patience, understanding and guidance will forever be appreciated. Thank You. 127 128
