Much preparation had to be made for our prom and everyone was willing to do his part. Little by little, day by day, everything began to take its place. After a week of hard work, the gym looked like a page from a storybook. Finally, everything was ready . . . 47 OVER THE RAINBOW QUEEN’S COURT Patty Belaska, Lore Gacioua, Mary Beth Biirgwinkle, QUEEN Elaine Specian. Nancy Ellis, Kathy Pianow- ski, Susan Steele. JUNIOR PROM QUEEN Elaine Specian 48 On Friday, May 12, 1967, we presented our Junior Prom. Fred Porter and His Orchestra played while 140 couples danced by the light of the crystal ball in our gymnasium-fairyland. Our lovely queen was Miss Elaine Specian, attended by Pat Belaska, Lore Gadoua, Mary Beth Burgwinkle, Nancy Ellis, Kathy Pianowski and Susan Steele. At 12 o’clock we reached the end of our rainbow and found a pot of gold filled with beautiful memories of our Junior Prom. 49 QUEEN Kathie Colburn WINTER ENCHANTMENT COURT, Susan Steele, Carol Bianchi, Queen Kathie Colburn, Sheila Brad- ley, Adie Lang. Our Senior Hop, Winter Enchantment, was held on February 10, 1968. Snowflakes suspended from the ceiling and snowy scenes on the walls added to the atmosphere of this winter ball. Bob Wilbar’s Orchestra played for us and our roast beef dinner was catered by Turini. Our lovely queen was Miss Kathie Colburn, attended by Susan Steele, Carol Bianchi, Sheila Bradley, and Adie Lang. The Queen was presented a dozen roses by Howie Sylvetsky, our Class President. As twelve o’clock struck, we were left with warm memories of our last formal at C.H.S. 51 Co-editors Fred Lowe and Mary Beth Burgwinkle. With some apprehension and anticipation we began slowly unwrapping. Now that we are finished we look back on the wonders, sorrows, and joys contained in the package. As Freshmen we began a new and different career from our former school days. With the same concentration and excitement that the nation had when Lyndon B. Johnson was elected President over Barry Goldw’ater, we elected our officers — President, Joseph Bahosh; Vice- President, Marcia Novia; Secretary, Mary Jo Weihn, and Treasurer, Joseph Edinger. In the world around us, men went to fight in Viet Nam, the space-race continued, Winston Churchill, the Man of the Century, died, and millions viewed the New York World’s Fair. Here in Clinton, we Freshmen learned about dues, mid year exams, and term papers; problems of lesser magnitude nationally, but of great concern to us. 68 Eager, and a little wiser, we returned in September as Sophomores. We started right by electing Howie Sylvetsky as President; Susan Steele as Vice President; Kathie Colburn as Secretary; and Joseph Edinger as Treasurer. Our school life was affected by the national scene and opinions on race riots and draft card burnings were heard in some classes, reports on Ed White’s w ' alk in space were enthusiastically marveled at and the universal feeling on Viet Nam was voiced in Sergeant Barry Sadler’s “Ballad of the Green Berets”. A new event which w ' as of vital importance to us here in Clinton was the Clinton-Nashoba Thanksgiving Day game which was tied 20-20. A member of our class, Elaine Biskaduros, was chosen Homecoming Queen to reign at the game. 69 Time raced on and suddenly we were upper classmen — -“Juniors”. Massachusetts sent Edward Brooke, the first Negro since the Civil War, to the Senate in statewide elections, and we elected Carlos Nieves as President; Susan Steele as Vice President; Eileen Vitonc as Secretary and Juan Nieves as Treasurer. In India, Mrs. Indira Ghandi took office as the first woman prime minister. Newspapers buzzed with articles on the ruinous Italian floods, miniskirts and pantsuits, Luci Baines Johnson and Patrick Nugent (and Patrick Lyndon Johnson), Russian-Amcrican peace talks in Glassboro, New Jersey, and the war in Viet-Nam. Clinton made headlines by beating Nashoba 30-8 on Thanksgiving Day. The first annual all-school play, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” made news, too, along with the new all- school fair. 70 i i Our optimism in the future was embodied by the theme of our Junior Prom — “Over the Rainbow The brilliant rainbow, the sparkling lights of the crystal ball, and the charm and dignity of the couples in their formal clothes blended together to make a striking picture and a lovely memory. As beautiful as Jane Ann Jayroe, crowned Miss America in Atlantic City, was our prom Queen, Elaine Specian. Adding their beauty to hers were her attendants Nancy Ellis, Mary Beth Burgwinkle, Patricia Belaska, Lore Gadoua, Susan Steele, and Kathy Pianowski. We were now the proud possessors of green and gold class rings and were survivors of the first part of the College Boards. Seniors — that magic year finally arrived. Having surmounted every obstacle of the past years, we resolved that CHS would never forget the Class of ’ 68 . Our officers were President, Howie Sylvetsky; Vice President, Susan Steele; Secretary, Eileen Vitonc; Treasurer, Juan Nieves. Mary Beth Burgwinkle was chosen Homecoming Queen for the Thanksgiving game. After one of the best assemblies ever held, Clintonians showed their pride in their excellent team and stood in the drenching rain Thanksgiving to see Clinton beat Nashoba again 7-6, to finish the season with a 7-1-1 record. December 2, after struggling through the college boards again we planned a Sadie Hawkins Dance which gave the girls the initiative for a change. 72 The national society news was Lynda Bird Johnson’s engagement to Marine Captain Charles Robb. Our society news was the memorable Senior Hop. Men were still giving their lives for freedom in Viet Nam, while on the homefront pacifists stretched their Constitutional rights to the limit, Hippies, LSD and Timothy Leary were watched with curiosity, interest and concern. 73 Now the package is fully opened. Inside were new friends, new ideas, new problems, new conquests, new excitement, new activities and, most important, a whole new life. As we leave the doors of CHS for the last time, we will recall the delight we found in the priceless gift of our high school years. The crucial moments of an important test, report cards, the Junior Prom, soaked twirlers, band members and cheerleaders cheering the team to victory Thanksgiving Day, Friday’s Baked Haddock, the assembly programs. Interclass Dramatics, 2:30 and “Seniors dismissed” . . . these are our memories . . . these we will miss . . . these we wall cherish. 74 WHO’S WHO BEST DANCERS Kevin Mack and Nancy Evans TYPICAL CHS STUDENT John Irvine and Sheila Bradley 75 76 NICEST HAIR Patty Hennis and Donny Zennaiter MOST CAREFREE Carol Bianchi and Franny Garrity NICEST DIMPLES John Nosek and Lore Gadoua BEST BLUFFERS Jean Nolan and Billy Learned NICEST SMILE Denny Parker and Kathie Colburn 78 MOST MISCHIEVOUS Jitty Joyce and Marcia Corman MOST ARTISTIC Kathy Stone and Danny Chiantis MOST BASHFUL Diane Wagner and Tom Catmen 80 CLASS FLIRTS Mary Moore and Larry Guinard MOST TALKATIVE Adie Lang and Mark Turmaine CLASS OPTIMISTS Lois Marhefka and Ken Gage NICEST EYES Mary Lou Gordon and Franny Ranieri MOST RELIABLE Howie Sylvetsky (and Patty Belaska, missini from picture) MOST SOPHISTICATED Mary Brower and Gene Gonzales f L I ES I — ( hri- D i cek and Sandy l.amlein 84 NICEST PERSONALITY Frank Notaro and Jessie Perrone Presentation of Plaque to Mrs. Dyer in Honor of Raymond F. After Notre Dame scored their only touchdown of the game, Clinton came alive. Rick Holka scored two quick touchdowns, one of them a twenty yard pass from quarterback Barry Dobeck. A Nieves brothers’ combination brought the Gaels eight more points. The final score of the game came in the third quarter when Joe Bahosh plunged over the line after a thirty-five yard march. In the fourth period, the Clinton reserves took over and played a stout game. They showed great potential for next year’s team. The Gael’s gained an impressive 234 yards rushing, as compared to Notre Dame’s meager 74 yards. Clinton 12 8 6 0 — 26 Notre Dame 6 0 0 0 — 6 Clinton Crushes Bishop Guertin 26-9 In honor of Parent’s Day, sponsored by the Clinton Athletic Council, the Gaels scored an impressive victory over Bishop Guertin High School. After Bishop Guertin scored and kicked for the extra point, Clinton came alive. A twenty yard Dobeck to Lugo pass climaxed an 86 yard drive for a touchdown. Behind 7-6 at the beginning of the second half the Gaels awoke both offensively and defensively. Needing only three plays, the Gaels scored with Carlos Nieves running 36 yards. Later, Dobeck plowed over for another touchdown. After Clinton’s stout defensive team haulted Bishop Guertin on the Gael’s one yard line, a missassignment in the offensive squad gave Bishop Guertin a two point safety. However, the Gaels quickly came back, as once, again, Carlos Nieves burst through the middle for the final touchdown of the day. Clinton 0 6 13 7 — 26 Bishop Guertin 7 0 0 2 — 9 87 Marlboro Edges Clinton 6-0 “The game of the year” was played before 6,000 excited fans. Coach O ' Grady’s undefeated Gaels put up a tremendous battle, but the breaks of the game gave Marlboro the revived Midland League crown. After two penalties for twenty yards were issued against Clinton, the Marlboro Panthers had a first down and goal-to-go. Clinton held desperately for three downs, only to have Marlboro score from the two yard line. Although a great amount of credit was given to the Gael backs, the entire C.H.S. squad was never outplayed and fought as an excellently balanced unit. .Marlboro Coach Kronoff called the Gaels, “One of the finest Clinton teams I have ever seen.” Clinton 0 0 0 0 — 0 Marlboro 0 0 6 0 — 6 For their first Midland League game of the 1967 season, the Gaels traveled to Hudson’s Morgan Bowl. The Hudson Hawks struck quickly and took a six to nothing lead early in the first quarter. Not until the second quarter did Clinton get moving. After a 70 yard march, Carlos Nieves broke threw the Hawks defense for the Gaels first 6 points. The extra point try was successful and Clinton left the field at half-time with a 7-6 lead. There was no scoring in the 3rd period. But, in the 4th period Clinton pressured the Hawks into a punting situation, when a bad pass from center resulted in the ball going into Clinton’s hands deep in the Hawk’s territory. On a 4th down- seven-to-go play Barry Dobeck unleashed a pass to Dave Praderio for a Clinton touchdown, again the extra point w ' as good. The final score was 14- 6 . 88 Clinton defeats St. Bernard ' s 12-6 Clinton High’s Galloping Gaels ended the four year dominance by the Fitchburg locals, stretching their undefeated record to seven. Midway through the second frame the Gael forwards opened up the right side, and Carlos Nieves sprinted 35 yards for Clinton’s first TD. Later in the 3rd quarter, Holka smashed over the right guard and dashed 48 yards for the second TD. St. Bernard’s only score came in the final period when Duchesneau plunged from eight yards out. Safety Juan Nieves made the most exciting run of the game; a 55 yard run after intercepting a desperation pass. The statistics showed C.H.S. gained 177 yards rushing as to St. Bernard’s 64. Clinton 0 6 6 0 — 12 St. Bernard 0 0 0 6 — -6 Gaels blank Lunenburg 28-0 The Gaels displayed their best offensive-defensive game of the year against Lunenburg. Bahosh scored after a 20-yard sprint down the right side lines followed by Carlos Nieves gaining the extra points by sweeping to the left. In the second half, Paul Fadgen took the opening kickoff, streaking 80 yards for the second T.D. McNamara’s kick hit it’s target. Clinton’s 3rd TD. came after a 55 yard march ending with a Dobeck to Vic Lugo pass for 23 yards. The Gael reserves took over in the 4th stanza. A handoff to Fadgen for 60 yards followed again by McNamara’s kick left Clinton on the top to stay. Clinton 0 8 13 7 — 28 Lunenburg 0 0 0 0 — 0 Gaels-St. Peters Deadlock 6-6 In the season’s opener 3,000 fans witnessed the Galloping Gaels tie heavily favored St. Peters in a hard fought defensive battle. The Saints scored first with a pass play from eight yards out. The Gaels capped a fifty-three yard march, the best offensive drive of the game, with Barry Dobeck throwing a ten yard touchdown pass to Juan Nieves. Thus the Saint’s long domination over Clinton had ended. The St. Peter’s coach remarked, “This is the best Clinton team that I’ve seen in all my years at St. Peters.” This was only the beginning of an excellent season for the Green and Gold. Nashoba Bows to Clinton 7-6 Clinton High Gaels came from behind in the second half to beat Nashoba Regional High of Bolton 7-6. The Gaels finished with the first winning season in over 10 years: a 7-1-1 record. .Aided by two 15 yard penalties, Nashoba battled its way into the end zone for the first 6 points of the game. Both teams were plagued by inclement weather. .After a confidence-building half-time session by Coach Jack O ' Grady, Clinton immediately showed results. A blocked punt, magnificent running, and team work spelled the tying TD. Walter McNamara split the uprights for the deciding point. The standouts, Charles Despotolous, John Nosek, Juan Nieves, Pete Pender, Austin Sheridan, Bob Seymour, and the rest of the team kept the ball deep in the Chieftain ' s territory throughout the remainder of the game. Bill Holka was Awarded the MVP Trophy donated by the Colonial Press for an outstanding game. Aided by the experience of senior tri-captains: Gene Gonzales, Michael O ' Malley, and John Cole, the team acquired the impressive record of 4 wins and 3 losses. The team show-ed it had what it takes when they downed their first opponent, a strong Shewsbury team by a score of 26 to 30. They showed better results against the top C.M.C. contenders, Marlboro and Watchusett than any other opponents. For their final meet of the season the Gaels edged Northbridge 27 to 28 in one of their best showings all year. At the close of the season the Gaels met with 133 other runners at the Annual C.M.C. meet. The following three Gaels: Gene Gonzales, Steve Polewarczyk, and Michael O ' Malley successfully placed 16th, 18th, and 20th respectively. Clinton proudly emerged fourth against the top Central Mass, contenders. We feel confident that with Gonzales, O ' Malley, and Cole plus the coming potentials the “ ’68” cross- country team will be the best ever and go to the title. The 1967-1968 basketball season at C.H.S. began with a great show of enthusiasm. Prompted by the rebirth of the school spirit, seventy-five candidates reported, each one determined to make the season a memorable one for the Gaels. ■Although continually plagued throughout the season by a lack of height, the team displayed an undying optimism, despite the fact that they came out on the shorter end of many of the scores. The team had a record of four victories and fourteen losses, handing defeats twice to Hudson and once to Maynard and Hudson Catholic. The team cannot be judged merely by the scores. The Gaels played brilliantly and gave every ounce of their ability. Every game was hard fought. e ' re proud of our squad, led by the excellent shooting of Fran Garrity and Gene Gonzales, the board work of Barry Dobeck and Howie Sylvetsky and the outstanding defensive work of Louis Colon and Paul Garofoli. Each player displayed excellent ability and good sportsmanship, qualities which will be noted in our future teams. Credit should be not only given to our fine coach, Mr. Walsh, the players, and the cheerleaders, who gave the team a great deal of vocal support, but also to the students and adults who attended the games. Our Gael J .V. squad turned in an admirable record of twelve wins and six losses. This record is the assurance of a successful varsity squad for next year. The class of 1968 wishes next year ' s team the best of luck. BASKETBALL 102 JUNIOR VARSITY — First row, John Gibbons, Jack Regoninni, John Gibbons, Jim O’Connell.
