A candid look at our classrooms and teachers, our corridors and clothes, our stairs and shoes and stockings. Our parents have probably often wondered what happened, in the interim, to the sleepy rushing character leaving the house early in the morning and the hungry, thirsty return in the afternoon. This section may clear up some of the mystery. 52 We also bear in mind as we prepare this Memorabilia that after a few months it will be looked at infrequently and then in fifteen or twenty or forty years a new generation (our children) will scan these pages. And the class graduating in the year 2005, (some of them OUR children) might pull this off the library shelf to see what Clinton High School and its faculty and students looked like way back in 1965. Our parents are concerned with the $2 to $3,000 a year to send us to college, and we are concerned about getting accepted. Lyndon B. Johnson is President of the United States and his vote margin last November, over Barry Goldwater, exceeded 12,000,000 votes. Even now, people forget the man who was Gold- water’s running mate, William Miller. 53 The members of our class were born during the Truman administration. And Truman today enjoys greater stature than ever. A weekly TV program explains his decisions during his White House stay. 54 55 The man of the century, Winston Churchill, died this year, our senior year, and we assume that when this century ends he will still be ‘man of the century’. As we prepare this book we read daily of American and Viet planes retaliating against the Viet Cong in North Vietnam. The draft is still operative. Pope Paul the sixth is the ruling Pon- tiff and there is an ecumenical spirit throughout the land. 56 Nikita Khrushchev was deposed as top leader of Russia and we are racing them to put the first man on the moon — alive — and have him come back — alive. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in our junior year and everyone felt they had lost a member of their own family. His Peace Corps is attracting thousands of volunteers. President Johnson has declared war on poverty and Governor John A. Volpe was reelected after a two year absence. The Righteous Brothers’ hit record, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Peelin’ ”, was in first place early in ’65 followed by Petula Clark’s “Down- town” and then the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring.” It has been a long time since “the Beatles” were not among the top ten and we’ve danced the twist, the Zombie, the Ape and the Dog. 58 « 60 “My Fair Lady” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told” are featured on the theatre screens, while David Janssen holds forth as “The Fugi- tive” on the TV tubes and Alfred Hitchcock dominates the airwaves. Plane accidents get bigger and bigger. Con- necticut’s Senator Dodd tries to control the sale of weapons. Our own Bobby Kennedy starts sounding like a New Yorker. Robert Moses has a Fair on Long Island, and T. S. Eliot dies. 62 64 There’s a spirit of change everywhere — The Negro Revolution, The Economic Opportunity Act, Pop Art, Frozen Foods, Africa, India, The- ology, Physical Education, The New Mathe- matics, Tools, Happiness, Leisure, Automation, Total Job Security, Plastics, Data Processing, Missiles, Amphetamines, The National Review, Urban Renewal, Senator John Tower, Appor- tionment, Whizzer White, Thermonuclear, Joan Baez, T-Bird, Appalachia, San Francisco, Love, Brotherhood, Balance of Payments, Route 495 and the Massachusetts Turnpike. In 1965 we had problems — -little ones, big ones, personal problems, common problems — but we have peace, too, and plenty and purpose and strength. 1965 was a Memorable Year. 66 I 67 Class History Freshman Year As we pass through the doors of our Alma Mater for the last time, we are reminded of the day we entered the halls of the “Old C.H.S.” We were bewildered and confused as we traveled from class to class, but we always found time to stop at Guidi’s Bakery for refueling. The upperclassmen were willing and enjoyed point- ing us in the wrong direction. To combat our problems we held our first class election. We chose as our leader, a likeable fellow, Tom McNamara. To round out his staff we chose Karen Gannon, Vice-President; Cathy Pfister, Secretary; and Joe Giansanti, Treasurer. After mid-years and our last day at “Old C.H.S.,” we dem- onstrated our exuberant emotions by participating in a farewell salute to Guidi’s. The next day we started our long and regretful walk from the old to the new. As we somberly sauntered through the park, we stopped and took a final and lasting look at the old brick building where many happy memories still remain. We were then awed by the new building and lost in its long corridors and many rooms for days. Mrs. Margaret A. McLean (Miss Smith) Sophomore Year September arrived again, but this time we returned a little more self-confident and a little less timid. We chose as our class officers: Kim Kerrigan, President; Anne Boodry, Vice-President; Barbara Giasante, Secretary; and Joe Giansante, Treas- urer. Our activities, under the direction of our class advisor. Miss Smith, included many bake sales and a candy sale. In January we paused from our regular every day routine to study for our mid-years. In May we tried for the first time to display our acting abilities in Interclass Dramatics. We presented our comedy skit entitled. If Boys Wore Skirts. In June, another year came to a close. We were all waiting for September to arrive again — our Junior year and our first year as being privileged upperclassmen. 68 Junior Year In September of ’63 we returned to C.H.S. as Jolly Juniors, another year closer to graduation. We got back into the old routine of studying and social affairs quickly. On election day, we chose Dick Savage, President; Ann Boodry, Vice-President; Barb Giansante, Secretary; and Joe Giansante, Treasurer. Soon, we were busily engaged in fund raising activities including dances and food sales, under the guid- ance of our new advisor, Mrs. Seegel. Because of the co-operation on the part of all members, these activities were a great success. Many of our boys, active in sports, came forth as heroes of the gridiron, baseball diamond, and basketball court. After the routine mid-years our thoughts turned to graduation. We received our class rings and took our P.S.A.T.’s. Our most important social event was our Junior Prom. “Shangri-La” was our theme. Our gorgeous decorations, a beautiful May night and of course class spirit, all helped to make our Prom the greatest yet. That finished one of the grandest and most successful years any class has ever had. We can look back with pride upon our Junior year. Senior Year Our Senior year has finally come and with it comes the closing of our high school career. Our four years have passed quickly. Yesterday we entered Guidi’s for our first recess; today we will eat in the cafeteria for the last time. In September ’64, we entered C.H.S. as leaders of the school; in June we leave to begin again. As a class we have always been well represented in sports. Although in football our win column was lean, our desire was strong. In basketball it was different. The Gaels of ’65 began to gallop amassing more wins than losses. In baseball we have all the elements which make for a winning season. Our Christmas assembly was truly in the ’65 style. A better one was never held. In January the flu hit and we were given a three day vacation. February brought the social highlight of the year, our Senior Hop, “Lollipops and Roses.” After this our eyes turned toward graduation, grand finale of the four most memorable years of our lives. Our joys and successes have been recorded in Memorabilia. The Class of ’65 anticipates a happy reunion in ’70. 69 What would happen if Mr. John Gibbons looked for trouble? The couples entered into a wonderland of candy and flowers which carried out the theme of “Lollipops and Roses.” Lollipop trees and a fountain of roses added much to the attractiveness of the hall. The couples danced to the music of Eddie Lucci and his orchestra while surrounded by the colorful display of lollipops and roses. At 11:00 P.M. the Queen and members of her Court were chosen. Janice McMahon reigned on a throne which was placed in front of a large white rose petal heart. She was crowned by Co-chairman, Peter O’Malley. The members of her court were Carolyn Dervin, Susan Bennett, Grace Nilsson, and Sharon Slattery. It was an evening which will always be remembered by those who attended. Junior Hop Karen Gannon, Merina Healey, Jane Azud, Joanne Femino, Queen; Mary Ann Haemer, Leslie Kurtz, Constance Zangles. The evening of May twenty-second 1964 will be re- membered as one of our most unforgettable experiences in our four years at C.H.S. After nearly four months of intensive planning, hoping and praying, “our Junior Prom” was a reality. Our theme was Shangri-La and the decorating com- mittee really outdid themselves. The motif was an oriental garden where the couples danced under the ming trees to the music of the Commodores; while dragons peered down from the walls. Reigning over Shangri-La was Joanne Femino, ’65, queen of the prom. Our class president, Dick Savage, presented Joanne with a dozen American Beauty roses and a bracelet to commemorate the occasion. Her court consisted of Jane Azud ’65, Merina Healey ’65, Connie Zangles ’65, Karen Gannon ’65, Leslie Kurtz ’64, and Mary Ann Haemer ’64. Later in the evening, Dick presented our advisor, Mrs. Seegel with one dozen pink, American Beauty roses. A small token of our gratitude for a person who has done so much for us. All too soon it was over and time to depart for the White Cliffs, for a post-prom dinner. But no matter where we go, we will always take with us the memories of our evening in “Shangri-La.” Connie Zangles Head Twirler Teresa Powers Carolyn Dervin Michele Ryan Sarah Wood 86 Cheerleaders and Twirlers Cathy Pfister Barbara Giansanti Gail Guidi Ellen Ciicchi Kathy Hutchins Head Majorette Pamela Steele 87 Doreen Wood, Karen Gaw, Teresa Powers, Cathy Pfister, Sarah Wood, Peggy Moran Co- Captains; Carolyn Dervin, Joanne Femino, Kathie Hutchins, Karen Gannon, Gail Guidi, Ellen Ciicchi, Maryellen S antoro Cheerleaders Ellen Cucchi, Kathie Hutchins, Sarah Wood, Teresa Powers, Doreen Wood, Co-Captains: Carolyn Dervin, Joanne Femino, Karen Gaw, Cathy Pfister, Peggy Moran, Karen Gannon, Gail Guidi, Maryellen Santoro 88 ClmfcoH Item, THtirsday Evening, March 4, 1965 Gaelettes Win Conference Crown By Defeating Wachusett Regional Clinton High School Band The Clinton Gaelettes became holders of the Central Massachu- setts Girls’ Basketball Conference for the 1964-65 season yesterday as they defeated last year’s Con- ference champs. Wachusett, by a slim edge of 37 to 34. The Clinton girls played a superb game al- though under heavy tension with Co-Captain Leslie Me Namara leading them on to victory with 5 field goals and free throws for a high score of 16 points. Also aid- ing the offense was Joan Regonini with 6 field goals for an added gain of 12 points for Clinton. Clinton’s fine diamond defense held up strongly by the strenuous efforts of Co-Captain Linda Ship- ley, Debby Windle, Livia Shipley and Elaine Sontag. Also playing a fine game was the Wachusett squad with Jane Peeso leading their attack with 8 field goals for a high sum of 16 points. is season the Clinton Gael- ettes coached by Mrs. Jesselyn Tobin were undefeated in their league with a 12 win and 0 loss record. 89 Row I: Clark Henebry, Joseph Yencsko, Capt. Under the watchful eyes of coach Kokernak the boys compiled a record of 1 2 wins and 8 losses. They were led by the fine playmaking of Joe Yencsko, the outside shooting of Dick Casasanto and Clark Henebry, and the inside boardwork of Capt. Phil DeCisero and Jim Nolan, all of whom are departing seniors. They were also given fine support by John Burgwinkle, Dave Fadgen, John Morin, Mark O’Malley, Bob Krantz, and Rich McIntyre. In postseason play the Gaels were invited to participate in the Fitchburg State Teachers College Tournament in which they finished in fourth place. This is especially true of year- book publishing, in which mass production methods have the tendency to force one to buy just what the other fellow buys. Making of soap or soup or salad dress- ing by mass methods is one thing. But it is quite another to attempt to produce a creative yearbook by trying to squeeze it into some pre conceived mold. It just can ' t be done that way. The Wm. J. Keller firm brings together highly trained craftsmen, the very finest papers and ink of superlative quality. Add to these a unique service plan built around the individual school, and, finally, produc- tion by the Velvatone process, which Keller perfected especially for the printing of yearbooks, and you have a truly distin- guished performance. And a yearbook with singular character and individuality . . . we call it THE LOOK OF THE BOOK.” The yearbook you are presently leafing through is the product of the Keller custom program. If you would care to see other examples of “THE LOOK OF THE BOOK” as produced by Wm. J. Keller, get in touch with us now. WM. J. KELLER INC. Publishers of Finer Yearbooks Buffalo 15, N. Y. J.
