Mr. Bolser, Mr. Rashkow, Mrs. Maner, and Mrs. Stites judged the floats entered in the Homecoming Parade. CCHS students had spent nearly every night during the preceding week building frames and folding and stuffing pomps. In fact, a couple of floats were completed only minutes before the parade started its trek down Center Street. The sun shone, the fans smiled, and the excited children darted between floats to gather candies thrown by students riding in pickup trucks. When the parade was over, the judges voted the sophomore float, Go fer it, as the best entry. 9 Parade paced by (including Irrcrdj E Horv comin colorful convertibles. Adding to the excitement of the Clinton High School basketball and football games were the twenty freshmen, J.V., and varsity cheerleaders. Locker decorations, a victory dance, pep assemblies, run-throughs, and moneymaking projects were some of the activities the cheerleaders participated in and planned this year. The girls worked hard to promote school spirit. They tried spirit ideas such as a slogan day where everyone went around saying Squash the Hornets. They also were guardian angels for a week which ended in a good pie-in-the-face-fight ; they prepared breakfasts and pizza parties for the ball players and coaches. Besides supporting the high school's football and basketball teams, the cheerleaders showed their talents at camps during the summer. Each squad did very well and received many ribbons. The varsity squad also won a first place plaque at their camp for the quality of their cheers and the enthusiasm they displayed throughout the week. The high school cheerleaders put in many hours of work to create a winning atmosphere, and they enjoyed every minute of it. We're still short one on the personalized list, and we have too many names on the second campaign list. Okay, kids, ONE MORE TIME! Have you seen the photo of-------------------? Student Council This year's Student Council began with a big bash ' the first annual Clinton Car Bash. The car bash teamed together with the snake dance, bon fire, powder-puff game, parade, and the dance Autum Love” to make Homecoming '80 a huge success. With homecoming under its belt. Student Council moved on to Christmas. During December the Council sponsored the hall decorating contest and the traditional holiday dance, Christmas Dreams. Following Christmas break. Student Council members sold Spirit Hands to help boost Maroon fans' spirits. Throughout the entire year Student Council accommodated people of the community with Visitors Day and satisfied the students' early morning hunger with their frequent doughnut sales. Of course that first day was mind-boggling— everyone was busy around me, but I did not know where to go or what subjects to take. As the year passed, certain things stand out in my mind. Homecoming events were all new for me, but especially, I remember getting to ride in a convertible in the parade while the crowd cheered and applauded. I have also especially enjoyed the plays the school has produced. Miracle Worker was so good; I am excited that I will be in the next production. The spirit of the school is impressive when we play Central Catholic. I enjoy the basketball games best for we do not have football in our country and so, I do not understand the game. The Sweetheart Dance was also an exciting time; I especially remember almost not getting ready in time to go. Youth for understanding Merja Ingberg When I came here the third of August and saw the United States the first time, I didn't know what to say. I met my new parents and all the people who I will work with through this year. It was all so confusing, I met new people all the time and my mind was so mixed up. After a couple weeks everything settled down, and I felt more at home. Then I started the school. First couple of days were really hard, and I was sure I wouldn't be able to get through this year at CHS. But the students helped me. They told me where to go, and also taught me the rules of the school. I started to enjoy the school thanks to the students of CCHS. I'll always remember this year as a lot of fun (like Homecoming and Sweetheart time) and just a little bit of upsets. I would like to thank all the students in this school because you made my sophomore year a success. 69 Back row: Terry Tatro, Randy Lowe, Allen Scronce, John Koshinski, Boly Swearingen, Brian Tedrick, Mr. Foster. In 1980-81 the club raised money by selling peanuts. Enough money was raised to send four students to the state convention. They also participated in a tour at the power plant. This year the theme of the club is Energy, and this tour provided us with valuable first-hand information. VICA will be participating in both skills and leadership contests at the Illinois VICA Skills Olympics. This two-day convention will be held in Springfield at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on April 30th through May 2nd. Last year Brian Tedrick (this year's president) finished 4th in the state in the Electrical Wiring Contest. We will finish our year by participating in the school's Spring Carnival. 70 Mr. Lehman has been operating the concession stand at Varsity basketball games, football games, and wrestling tournaments for the past five years. The members are an involved group, participating in many activities throughout the year. The fund raising projects ranged from selling treasure chest items to holding a 24 hour rock-a-thon (that is rock as in rocking chair). Other projects throughout the year included a cookout and initiation of members, the annual FHA Alumni Homecoming Breakfast and fashion show (with clothing and fabrics contributed by local merchants and modeled by club members), a mini float in the Homecoming parade, the Sweetheart Dance (our biggest project), and our final project, a pizza snack booth at the NHS Spring fling. FHA also participated at the State and Section levels of the Future Homemakers of America. They attended officer workshops at the section levels. At the Section rally they were presented with a certificate recognizing a contribution made by section 4C to the FHA—HERO Foundation in memory of Lois Hieronymus, the long time sponsor of the Clinton FHA Chapter. In April they attended the State Leadership Conference; Diann Hawes and Michelle Juliuson entered in two of the various skill shops offered. Other activities included soil judging, parliamentary procedure, public speaking, demonstrations, livestock and dairy judging, mechanics competition, and the farm management contest. As a result of Bart Miller's serving as Section 16 president and Diane Harpenau's fulfilling the duties of Section vice-president, Clinton hosted the section leadership school. State Senator John Maitland was guest speaker. Tom Rogers, past chapter president and state vice-president, was awarded the American Farmer degree. Tom is only the second member of the Clinton chapter to receive this award. The Agriculture Supply and Service class, with the help of Mr. Adams, constructed a still and began alcohol fuel production on a small scale. Librarians sell school supplies Clinton High School's Library Club members work hard and do lots of different tasks in order to help students and teachers as they study and read for pleasure. The student assistants check out books, magazines, and vertical file materials, and then check the materials in when they are returned. This year students have been especially valuable in helping to shift the collection so that the shelves are more balanced, helped to prepare new book displays, and checked in new magazines. Selling school supplies has been both a money-raising project and a service to students this year. Students enjoyed a Christmas party and plan to attend the Spring District meeting. The year began with the Apple and Pork Festival in September. The Art Club sold hand printed tote bags and t-shirts with a choice of three different festival designs. A Rembrandt Society meeting was held at Illinois State University on October 4. A guest artist gave a demonstration on clay sculpture, and all regional and local students and teachers made similar sculptures. During October the Art Club was involved in the Homecoming parade. They had a walking float consisting of replicas of famous paintings which they changed somewhat so that the Homecoming theme was noticeable. The Art Club received first place in the small float competition. In December the Art Club and several other 80 art students traveled to Raymond, Illinois where they participated in the annual Art Affair. Clinton students returned home with 18 awards. During Christmas vacation several club members began painting a mural in the cafeteria at the DeWitt County Nursing Home in Hallsville. Another mural is planned for the nursing home livingroom. This one will be done during the first two weeks in June. In January two Art Club members, John Williams and Carrie Coon, met with Gov. Thompson to discuss Youth Art Month and State support. John and Carrie are both officers of the Rembrandt Society. In February the Art Club participated in an invitational art exhibition held at 111. Wesleyan University in Bloomington. During this same month Art Club sponsored an Art Teachers Mini Conference at our school. About 65 teachers from the state attended. Prof. Shozo Sato, artist in residence from the Univ. of 111. was the guest artist. Risoli was bom in Blue Island, Illinois, on April 24, 1917. For a period of time he had his own orchestra in Chicago. A veteran of World War II, Pat moved to Bloomington, Illinois, and found employment with Steak 'n Shake. He worked there for twenty-three years. In September of 1975, he moved to Clinton. On March 28, 1977, he went to work at Clinton High School as a custodian. Pat soon endeared himself to students and staff alike. Among these qualities are the patience and understanding to see someone through a problem at home or at school, the ideas for improving the quality of education, both academically and socially, the good judgment to know when his help is needed and when it is not, and the development of students' hopes for their future. For the past six years he has been the sponsor of Student Council, and for two years he was the coach of the X-Coun-try team. During his free time he enjoys participating in the Y-Players, singing, and running. He has worked with Mrs. Glasson to form a new night-time family counseling group. His hard work and efforts have kept many young people from dropping out of school at an early age. The yearbook staff and the Class of 1981 are proud and honored to dedicate the 1980-81 Clintonia to Stuart L. Coon. Where do you hide to have your Snickers? Seniors recall . . . As the Seniors neared graduation, they began to think back on their preceding years and remember the events that had taken place during their four years at Clinton High School. Upon entering high school, the class of '81 found no military police patrolling the halls, but that was soon to change. There was modular scheduling, senior benches, free time, rafter races, and Starsky and Hutch impersonations, the latter of which prompted the guards to move into action. 1978 was entered into with high hopes. The new seniors guarded their bench as faithfully as the classes that had come before them. They entertained us with their own version of The Gong Show. Class Night was held and produced the memorable hit, The Twelve Years of School. Shouts and arguments were heard throughout the halls when school reopened in 1979. This cry was heard regularly, Where are the benches? The last year came and went quickly. There were no benches and there were hall monitors. The 1980-81 year will be remembered because it was the year Clinton finally beat Central Catholic in basketball. Looking back, seniors remember the three classes they've seen come and the three classes they've seen go. They will always remember the people they've loved and those they've lost and these people will live in their hearts forever.
