CLINTONIA 1980 “Light up the 80's Clinton Community High School - J Clinton, Illinois 61727 Volume 57 Editors: Vickie Lenchner Advisor: Tim Wages Doris Wunderlich Mrs. Betty Kline The Senior Class and the staff of the Clintonia dedicate the 1980 yearbook to Mrs. Betty Kline. Mrs. Kline, a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, has completed her 12th year at CCHS. Always ready with a smile or a few words of greeting, Mrs. Kline is a favorite of many of the CCHS students. She is a gardening enthusiast and takes great pleasure in reporting the latest happenings at her residence in the country. Mrs. Kline taught at Romeoville, Illinois, her first year. During her twelve years at Clinton High School, she has headed the Future Nurses of America and has been a sponsor for the Junior Class. Mrs. Kline is active in the Methodist Church, where she is Chairman of Wills and Bequests. She is also secretary of the Weldon Springs Advisory Committee. To our own Country Gentlewoman we dedicate the 1980 issue of the Clintonia. 2 • u Table of Contents Sports 35 Organizations 63 Administration and Faculty 85 Seniors 99 Juniors 123 Sophomores 135 Freshmen 149 Advertising 159 HOMECOMING PARADE The Homecoming Parade was as much of a thrill for the participants as it was for the onlookers. 4 CCHS Homecoming Parade was held on Friday, September 28. Classes and organizations entered the float competition. Floats were judged as follows: First Place — Seniors Second Place — Juniors Third Place — Sophomores Fourth Place — Freshmen 5 Clinton Scores Twice In Homecoming Game The Pontiac Indians scored late in the first quarter giving them a 6-0 lead. Clinton came back with 1:35 remaining in the half and scored on a pass play from Tim Green to Bob Epperson (right). The Indians then scored very early in the second half, giving them a 12-6 lead. With a little over a minute remaining in the third quarter, John Westendorf scored the second Clinton touchdown (top). The conversion was no good, and the score stayed at 12-12. The Indians scored again with 5:37 left in the game. The final score was 18-12. Spirit Week Andi Reiman —Recovering from the senior float. Mr. Truitt —On the lookout for Injuns. She was crowned 1979-80 Homecoming Queen. She was chosen queen from a group of six candidates. Coronation ceremonies were held during half-time at the Pontiac-Clinton football game, Friday evening. Cathy reigned over the Homecoming Dance, Shadows in the Moonlight, held on Saturday evening. Many older people wonder why teenagers drive around and around the square. They probably do not realize how much fun cruising really is. Here are a few facts some people may not be aware of. Did you know that . . . ? The square is really round. The square is only one way. Six trips around the square make a mile. The police station is there. More laws are broken on the square than in any other place in Clinton. In the summer there are more pigeons on the square than in New York City. There are more frisbees on the square in the summer than on Daytona Beach. There is also a square on the square (Gas Light Square). The Pontiac Indians gained their first victory of the season as they edged the Maroons 18-12 in the annual Homecoming game, September 28, 1979. Despite touchdowns by Westendorf and Epperson, Clinton fell to 0-4 and 0-3 in the conference. The Homecoming game was dedicated to the Stone family in remembrance of Joe Stone, former teacher. 16 Sportsmen Honored at Fall Banquet Members of the cross country team were the first to receive awards at the fall sports banquet. The students met after school for their practices, which usually lasted between one-and-a-half to two hours. This year the team played for fun more than for competition, but Coach Zartler would like to increase the membership in the club and to enter into competition in the next couple of years. 37 Girls 8-9 Overall Record Back: Carmon Young, stat.; Cathy Hermling; Cheryl Short; Cindy Bush; Dorothy Jackson; Lynn Wages; Cheryl Sturgeon; Doris Jackson; Chris Newlun; Lori Jo Brown, manager and stat.; and Coach Connie Mahoney. This is the first time ever that any girl from Clinton High School has placed in the State finals. In the nine games they played, only 4 or 5 of the team members were able to play in every game. Having few juniors and senior players able to play left the underclassmen to pull the team's weight. The varsity team should have won at least two games this year. Their first big” opportunity came during the Homecoming game. They were tied at 12-12 with Pontiac. Near the end of the game, a pass hit a Maroon; and a Pontiac player caught the ball in the end zone. The second opportunity came in the Olympia game. The score was 6-0, and Clinton was about to score. The Olympia defense held, and then they scored again to win 15-0. These disappointments and injuries should be considered learning experiences which will help next year's team to have a winning season. 41 Back: Coach Eddy, David Billingsley, Clayton Rhodes, Brian McFeeters, Garel Schumaker, Robbie Cunningham, Blair Brommel, Mike Morris, Randy Workman, Artie Lehman, Steve Perring, Curt Utterback, Allen Billingsley, Wade Finley, Coach Wylder. This was their only win; however, in four games they were beaten by only one touchdown. The running backs, Artie Lehman and Steve Perring, combined for over 1,000 yards in rushing. These two players also scored many of the team's touchdowns. For a freshman squad, this team shows great promise. 42 Back: Coach Triezenberg, John Parker, Larry Luster, Dave Linehan, Bobby Davis, Tom Kreuser, Kip Hoke. Sophomore Football The Sophomore Football Team finished 0-8 for the season. Frequently several sophomores had to fill in for injured varsity players; consequently these substitutions made it difficult for the team to play to its full potential. At the sports banquet Mr. Triezenberg summed up the sophomore season, We thought we saw a light at the end of the tunnel; we later found out it was just an oncoming train. Andi Reiman was the player who received the 110% award. Go For It was the motto that the girls used during this season. This motto refers to their desire for winning. Although the Clinton wrestling team had many problems which hurt them throughout the year, they managed to send the first Clinton wrestler in ten years to the State Finals. The team also wrestled some of the best downstate teams; five of the teams were ranked in the States class A poll. Coach Eddy commented, If we can become stronger and develop a good mental concept of ourselves, we will be much better next year when we will have ten returning lettermen. Jim Harrold was the first Clinton wrestler to advance to the State Finals in ten years. There are fifteen students in the class. Mrs. Doris Wunderlich is the teacher and advisor. The class must write a minimum of one article per week. The paper is pasted up and printed once every three weeks. On the day the Excaliburs are to be sold, the Journalism class comes into homeroom before 8:00 A.M. to sort the papers for delivery to all of the teachers. The papers are then sold to the students for 15c per copy. Every third Saturday some of the class members go down to the Clinton Daily Journal at 8:00 A.M. to paste up the paper. The Journal prints the paper for the Thursday following paste-up. The Excalibur is self-supporting; ads are sold to finance the $150 cost per issue. Student Council The Student Council was involved in many activities this year. They sponsored the Spirit Week activities, the Powder Puff football game, the Anything Goes assembly, and the Homecoming Dance. Also, the council sponsored the Christmas Dance and a District Overnight. The council held a New Parents Day each month. The parents of new students and freshmen were shown the school and were invited to have lunch in the commons. Another activity of the Student Council was a student exchange. Students from Clinton went to other schools for a day, and other schools council members came to Clinton. Back Row: Tina Bush, president; Stuart Coon, sponsor; Kent Volker, vice-president. Throughout the year this group, with a grant from the government, has attended a Madrigal Dinner at I.S.U. and four plays at Wesleyan and has traveled to Chicago to visit the Art Institute. Thus far, only the class of 1980 has participated in this program, but a similar program is being organized for the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. 67 National Honor Society m National Honor Society is a group of selected members. The members hold meetings the first and third Wednesday of the month. They are always making plans, either to help others, to make money, or just to have fun. The National Honor Society holds two inductions each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. To be a member of National Honor Society is one of the highest honors a student can receive. To be chosen for the organization one must rank in the top third of the class. There are four qualities a student must have in order to become a member. These qualities are scholarship, character, leadership, and service. At the fall induction Bloomington Mayor Richard Buchanan was the guest speaker. He reminisced on the days when he was a student at CCHS. 68 Back Row: Troy Gee, John Waddock, Tim Wages, Marcia Taylor, Tim Green, Kyle Kent. FHA Future Homemakers of America is an organization dedicated to helping youth assume their roles in society in areas of family life, personal growth, vocational preparation and community involvement. Early in the year, FHA members sponsored one of their largest projects, the Homecoming Dance. They put much time and effort into this project to make it a success. They also built tne traditional FHA float, featured in the Homecoming Parade. Under the supervision of advisers Rhonda Baum and Debbie Rieger, the club attended an FHA Regional Rally in Monticello. Then, as a fund-raising project, they sold treasure chests, boxes filled with household items, games, puzzles, and other gadgets. This project proved to be profitable as well as fun. The annual Sweetheart Dance, organized by FHA, is their largest and most important project. After six weeks of hard work, much planning, and late hours by FHA members, the dance was enjoyed by many, and a definite success. 70 Future Farmers of America Back Row: Matt Fields, David Suggs, Rod Smith, Larry Thayer, Mike Thayer, Mike Benz, Steve Harney, Kip Hoke, Jerry Baumgartner, Rick Burk. (5) To gain a greater knowledge of rules and techniques used in activities so the individual may enjoy a variety of games, as a participant as well as a spectator. Steve Hagenbruch Steve Hagenbruch and A1 Austin DRIVER'S EDUCATION George Williams 93 w 1 t Paul Harden Debra Rieger and Rhonda Baum BUSINESS The Business Department offered eleven classes this year; they included Accounting I and II; Typing I, II, and III; Clerical Office Practice (COP); Shorthand I; Introduction to Business; Business Math; Business Law; and Introduction to Data Processing. Members of the department had three goals in mind as they taught their classes: (1) To prepare students to obtain and expand vocational skills and knowledge necessary for successful entry into the job market. (2) To acquaint students with working world expectations and develop attitudes conducive to success. (3) To encourage productivity and social consciousness in order to become responsible citizens. Home Economics In Memoriam of Lois Hieronymus On June 2, Clinton High School lost a very special lady. Mrs. Hieronymous had taught Home Economics at Clinton for twenty-two years. She was a friend to everyone, and her love and laughter were infectious. Her pleasant voice, her warm smile, and most of all, her friendship, will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her. 94 AGRICULTURE Donald Prather Experiences gained through agriculture and industrial classes are designed to provide the students with skills and knowledge needed for employment. Programs offered in agriculture include production, mechanics, and supplies and services. Industrial programs include drafting, building construction, metals, welding, and auto mechanics. Emphasis is placed on actual experience including shop activities, construction of the building trades house, welding projects, supervised experience programs in agriculture, and activities through FFA and VICA. Curt will be missed by both students and faculty. He was always prepared with a good joke or a humorous comment or two. Curt has been looking forward to his retirement years. He plans to do some fishing and hunting. He may even log in some time in the ole rocking chair. Curt and his wife reside at 10 Willow Drive in Clinton. Everyone here at CCHS wishes Curt a healthy and happy retirement. Curt Covington Retires Iheri's.i Trinidad Teresa Schaerer I came from the Philippines as a Youth For Understanding exchange student. I am now staying with Mr. and Mrs. Rex Gambrel for the school year. My country is warm all the time which is quite different from America. I won't experience seeing snow for the rest of the year, but I am familiar with snow from movies and shows on T.V. We eat rice almost every meal of the day in my country. I enjoy school very much, but geometry is most difficult. My stay is a new experience for me because the food, the weather, and the ways of the people are different. I have learned and now understand that not all the ways of people in the world are the same. • . Stan the Man, as he was known by his many friends and teachers, is remembered as fun loving, smiling, and good natured. He was a respectful, hard working, and helpful student. Stan was especially devoted to the Dallas Cowboys football team, and he often wore a shirt proclaiming this fact. He enjoyed discussing scores, players, and the team's efforts. Stan also used his knowledge of football here at Clinton, where he was a member of the sophomore team. An avid farmer, Stan was also an active member of the FFA. Stan will always be remembered by his friends at CHS. A plaque in his memory has been placed in the commons. This summer the FFA will erect a memorial welcome marker on Route 54, west of the high school. This FFA marker will be dedicated to Stanley Moore.
