CLINTONIA 1979 CLINTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL, CLINTON, ILLINOIS 61727 VOLUME 56 | TABLE OF CONTENTS 1 SPECIAL EVENTS 3 ATHLETICS 35 ORGANIZATIONS 63 PERSONALITIES 83 The Best of the Seventies The “Best of the Seventies” edition of the Clintonia would like to give special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hettinger, Spray Photography and McKinley Photography, for their help in producing quality pictures for our yearbook. This year’s book was produced as a classroom activity with academic credit given to students for working on the book. The Clintonia is a member of Eastern Illinois School Press Association, Northern Illinois School Press Association, National Scholastic Press Association, and Evansville University Press Association. To a Very Special Lady The Clintonia Staff and the Senior Class of Clinton Community High School are honored to dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Lois Hieronymus. Mrs. Hieronymus, as a Home Economics teacher, has taught Foods I, Meal Planning, Child Care, Child Developement,Consumer Education, and Family Living to any student wishing to better understand the domestic world. Before teaching, Mrs. “H” attended Illinois State University for her B.S. and received her M.S. from Milli-kin University. This is her 21st year at C.C.H.S. Whoever has been lucky enough to have had Mrs. Hieronymus as a teacher knows of a lasting bond formed between her and her students. It is a bond of friendship and enjoyment which is radiated by this very deserving woman. To our own Mrs. “H” we dedicate this book for the memories you have given C.C.H.S. 2 ffi iwi Hii fflit RftKi $ «$ $ sassdgsg s •' «' ipH r l-.: •:■:■: k Friday the 13th is marked as that fateful day when only bad things are supposed to happen. That theory was proven wrong on Homecoming Day, however, when the infamous members of the class of ’79 became the winners for the fourth year in the float competition. Second place was captured by the Freshman class with the slogan, “Even Mighty Mouse Can’t Tackle The Mighty Maroons.” To the Sophomore class with a slogan proclaiming, “Sizzle the Saints,” went the third place ribbon. The parade was led by the Clinton Police, followed by the high school M-squad and marching band. Other groups represented were National Honor Society, Cross Country, Football squads, Maroon cheerleaders, and Junior High cheerleaders. MING 4 Other Homecoming activities included the annual Junior-Senior Egg Fight held at the Water Works Park. Just as the juniors were beating the seniors, the Clinton Police Department came and ended it with an early finish. On the same evening, Clinton High School Clubs and Groups revived the traditional windowpainting. The National Honor Society won with the Slogan, “Reach for the Stars,” with the seniors placing second. 5 Central Catholic stunned Clinton with a quick strike in the first quarter making the score, 7-0. The Maroons roared right back, driving 66 yards in twelve plays. Green hit Jim Sparrow on a pass. Brett Miller added the extra point making the score, 8-7. Clinton’s lead was sweet and very short lived. The Clinton offense rolled up 358 total yards, but the defense gave up 341 yards. Clinton also had more first downs, but Central Catholic still won, 30-22. 6 Foreign Exchange Students Express Their Ideas Katsuko Uesugi is a long way from her home in Nara, Japan, but in the true spirit of Homecoming, her new friends at Clinton High School have made her feel welcome and at home. “I miss my friends and my Mom in Japan, but I have new friends here, and 1 like Clinton very much.” By January our heavy winter snowfalls introduced her to a season she had only experienced mildly before. “In Nara we have about two inches of snow about ten days of each year. If we have snow one day in Japan, the next day it is gone. 1 have enjoyed sledding (although I had a lot of bruises from it at first) and ice skating on real ice.” We will miss Katsuko when she returns to her home. She will take with her a better understanding of the English language and the American people, but, even more importantly, she leaves with us the memory of a warm and affectionate girl whom we all loved. They’re Learning A For Eric Brito life in Clinton is surely a change from that in his hometown of Caracas, Venezuela. “For me, Clinton was a little town, because 1 came from a city of 3,000,000 people. In a city like that, everything happens, and nobody sees you for a long time.” While staying with the Robert Case family, he has made friends here at Clinton High School and has learned many things about America. “1 never saw snow in my life, but 1 didn’t expect to see that much like 1 saw in Clinton!” Like his American “family” we will miss Eric greatly when he leaves. He has made impressions on our lives that will long be remembered. 7 September Memories On October 14th, the Student Council sponsored the annual Homecoming dance. This year the dance was called AUTUMN MIST. Spirit chains hung from the ceiling, and Autumn colors were everywhere. This gave the commons a warm, romantic feeling. Couples danced to the band, SLIP STREAM, which played from 8p.m.-l 1p.m. During the dance, if you and your date wanted a lasting memory, Bob McKinley was taking pictures on stage. Autumn Mist Everything seemed to know it was Homecoming Everywhere was the feeling of Autumn Mist! Couples and groups strolling in the whispering wind, following, joining the awaiting music and excitement. A special dance ... the first for some the last for others Joyful anticipation for all. WHAT A MW, V VW swi!i'!6[Ht lE0S Vv m,___-u WEEK!! The court for the future Homecoming Queen is shown here anxiously awaiting to go before its school. Each girl had to pick a question and answer it to the best of her ability- At Last!!! Sheila Parker’s first response after discovering that she was chosen to reign as CCHS 1978-79 Homecoming Queen was, “Oh, no!. What do I do now?’’ Amid tears and screams of excitement from the crowd, Sheila was crowned during half-time by Toni Thompson, the 77-78 Homecoming Queen. Sheila was escorted to the game on Friday, October 13, by Joe Disney, a close friend and co-worker of Sheila’s at Clinton’s Dairy Queen. For the dance Saturday, October 14, Sheila was escorted by Alan Morris. She was congratulated by a member of the band. Slip Stream, and presented with a gift by Brett Miller, Student Council President. After accepting the gift, Sheila took the opportunity to thank everyone who supported her saying, “Now is when you realize who your friends really are.” Afterwards, Sheila and her escort danced to “Color My World’’ while other students looked on. 13 High Hopes— High Dreams After a month of anxiety, fourteen students were inducted into the Charles Evans Chapter of the National Honor Society. Out of thirty possibilities, only the fourteen were chosen on November 21,1978. Illinois State Representative, Sam Vinson, was a suprise guest speaker who spoke on his memories of CC11S and the honor of becoming a member. Old and new members alike were given the rest of the afternoon off and dinner at Guzzardo's. Can They Make It? You Bet! On November 17 18, twelve CCIIS couples participated in a 24-hour Muscular Dystrophy Dance-a-Thon. Total pledges came to $2,135.00, and several prizes were rewarded. First prize for top individual pledge was a $25.00 bond, while the top couple pledges received chicken dinners, proof sets, and 10 gallons of free gas. Second place couples were awarded $10.00 gift certificates, albums, a planter, and 10 free car washes. Food donations were from the Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, IGA, Kroger, and Eisner. Let It Snow Let Us 16 Dance Under boughs of green pine and large red bows, couples enjoyed the music of Eargasm. Student Council sponsored Ihe annual dance on December 9, 1978 with each representative donating cookies and refreshments for the tired couples. If you wanted a longer rest, Bob McKinley was posing couples on big Christmas presents and taking their pictures. APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE SORRY WRONG NUMBER CURSE YOU JACK DALTON Director. Cross-country running is an “Individual” sport, but scoring is done on a team basis. The runners work on short distance running for speed as well as long distance for endurance. Team workouts involve running intervals or running 9-10 hours a day. This season our cross-country team participated in meets with 16 schools. Five of these schools were in the Corn Belt Conference. The CHS teams won only three of these meets. The season was disappointing, but several runners did show improvement over their previous best times. Every day the wrestlers worked out very hard since they wanted to be successful. Wrestling requires a good deal of self-sacrifice and self-discipline. Kamal Shalabi. Mike Grimes, and Bart Miller represented CHS in Sectionals at U-High. Bart was the only one that placed. The following boys did an outstanding job: John Werts. Jim Harrold. Dennis Reynolds and Todd Thomas. Brett Miller was injured before the season, but he supported each and every wrestler and served as honorary captain of the team. The top three scorers of the season were: Sas Spencer, 746 points; Wendy Jones, 339; Cheryl Sturgeon, 204. Sas also had the most rebounds and assists. It was Wendy’s first year playing, and she helped the team a great deal especially with her height. Coach Austin is very pleased with the girls and hopes they’ll go further with their talent. The school year 1978-79 was a real experience for the journalism class and their new sponsor, Mrs. Nancy Mareing. The stu dents did all the writing, advertising, and layout themselves, using the DeWitt County Observer, and the Daily Journal and Public for paste-up. It was rough going and the staff members didn’t put out as many issues as they would have liked to. Gathering ads, getting interviews, and sponsoring a Gong Show were only some of the activities that went on. Due to lack of funds, no contests were entered this year and therefore some of the incentive was missing. In all, we accomplished what we set out to do-produce a newspaper and we gave it our best. Laurie Bryant Editor-in-chief 65 Todd and Merri prepare to sell advertising for the Excalibur. One of the greatest honors a high school student can receive is election to the National Honor Society. According to the national office, a student must have at least a “B” average in order to be eligible. In the Charles Evans chapter at C.C.H.S.. a student may first become eligible during the second semester of his her junior year. Eligibility for induction is based on scholarship, character, leadership, and service. After totaling the service points of all students scholastically eligible, each teacher rates those students whom he knows as to character and leadership on a scale of 1 -10. After totaling and averaging the points of all four categories, those students whose points meet the predetermined quotient are inducted into National Honor Society. 1st row: Melissa Webb, Mary Waddock, Sheila Parker, 2nd row: Laurie Bryant, Brett Miller, Marc Rockhold, Lisa Kent, Julie Harpenau, Dee Armstrong, Kim Butler, Teresa Armstrong, Sue Thompson, Mrs. Rinkenbcrger 3rd row: Kay Belangec, Wendy Jones, Jane Welch, Nancy Lappin, Karen Howry.
