One look at the CHS River King football schedule for 1967, and the pollsters picked the Kings to finish ninth in the Mississippi Valley. With a host of state-ranked teams on the slate, that pessimism may have been justifiable, but in the end the Kings surprised the predictors with a 4-4 conference finish, good for a fifth place tie. Easily the highlight of the year was the spectacular battle with Cedar Rapids Jefferson, then undefeated and boasting a 34-game Win streak. Jeffbounced into a 14-0 first half lead, but then had to hang on for life, as the Kings completely dominated in the second half, although wind- ing up on the short end of a 14-12 score, Another highlight was a 19-7 Homecoming Win over Iowa City. Per- haps the most satisfying victory of the year came at Davenport Central. Humiliated in the previous year with the Worst defeat in CHS history, the Kings got sweet revenge by spoiling Central's Homecoming, 7-0. They Wound up the season by outracing a good Dubuque team, 32-21. That point total was the most amassed by the Kings during the year. Junior Bruce Kelly Wound up with the conferenceis best average gain-per-carry, with a mark of 9.0 yards per try. When the conference teams were named, co-captain Chuck Merritt was named a first team de- fensive team choice, and he and tackle Mike Ashton were on the second offensive team. Kelly was elected team captain for 1968.
