Remember your teachers, the principal, the study halls, the activities, the sports events, your friends, the noise, the pep assemblies, the Junior Carnival, the Prom, Gateway Classics, book reports, the mad rush for the lunch line. the way the halls looked at 8:00 in the morning and 3:10 in the afternoon, Homecoming, gym class, swimming class, the dances and decorating for them, the upperclassmen and the underclassmen, P.A.P. programs, the plays, the Pan American and Latin Club banquets, the school paper, the school songs, and cheers, the Foreign Exchange Student, skip day and graduation? Throughout this book we have tried to include most of the important things that took place in your school in 1960, so that whenever you open the cover of this book you will be turning back the hands of time and reliving all those wonderful mements you spent at Clinton High. x ' ' I Mah 4. al D Q5 .gb if 44 'A g O O .A ,QW Le' 5' Q-a -K z' :ew is is 1 L 3-., ' Q I ' 1 U 1 4 3 . I sf, 17 all Q1 Judy Leggett and Ron Junge, 1959 Junior Carnival Royalty JUNIOR CARNIVAL 1959 Out of this world! was the only way to describe the 1959 Junior Carnival put on by the graduating Class of '6O. The Carnival was held on a rainy night, March 14, but was a huge success in spite of the bad weather. The festivities began with the concessions which filled the halls of Clinton High with fun, laughter, and excitement Following the concessions, the talent show was held in the auditorium with entertainment provided by the most talented performers available. Before the ever-popular Rock-etts concluded the program, Ron Junge and Judy Leggett were crowned King and Queen of the carnival. Ron and Judy then led the students to the gymnasium for the dance, Rendezvous in Space. It was obvious that the Juniors had put much time and hard work into the decorations which all dealt with outer space. There was even a green Martian lady seated on the piano which the Mellowtones used to furnish the dance music. As we look back in our fun-filled days at C.H.S., the 1959 Junior Carnival is sure to be one of our most out standing memories. It is something that the Class of '60 can be proud. Roy Peterson gives that last bit of exertion to snap the tape in the 120. . 'I - - Q' J.- V-- 1, -- . m 5g,5.l.,.J' -U ' --at 0 f J' M ' 1ss lxathy Johnson Q 591 reigned as queen over the 1959 Gateway Classic. Her court included Judy Luckritz, senior attendantg Linda Jacobson, junior attendantg Jerry Ann Wildman, sophomore attendant. I Jim Matzen, third from the left, maintains a steady pace in the 120 preliminary. f Bob Thiesen passes the baton to Keith John son in the mile relay. John Rashke creates a minor sandstorm as he crashes into the pit in the broadjump. Star pole-vaulter, Bob Neisslie f'59j sets his 12' 8 1!4 mark. This jump broke a 24 year old record. The Class of 1960 proudly presents Pari- sian Springtime. On May 1.5, 1959 a magic wand was waved over the Washington Junior High gym, and it was transformed into a typical Parisian street scene. The breeze was balmy and the atmosphere had a romantic air about it. The cheerfulness of the sidewalk cafe, the bubbling fountain, the gay sprigs of spring blossums, all seemed to add to the completeness of this night, A hazy cloud of musical rain had descended upon this place. As the grand march encircled the floor, being led by our royalty Marilyn Nyquist and Flint Anderson, you notice the Eiffel Tower in all its splendor and the distant beaming lights shining to let all their radiance show that this was truly the night of nights, a dream come true. The clock strikes one, this could not be the beginning of the end already. This magical dream could never end, it will remain for- ever in the memory of all who experienced Parisian Springtime. The dim lights on the tower Renews to us that hour. The laughter and song, The midnight now gone, Through the leaves we see the whisper of dawn The throning echoes that were here have quickly gone. Oh, what a delightful and glorious thing To experience Paris in the Spring. R .' 'xv If 710. KO! in iii V' 'Y AA 'RET-?H'-F vv AEK. The pert little brunette preferred to be called Roko. Roko was kept busy this past year doing her studies for English ll, American History 11,Govern- ment 12, typing, choir, and physical education. She found the language barrier a giant-sized problem. Roko thought our school spirit here at Clinton High was just wonderful. She thought the pep rallies were loads of fun and tried to learn all the yells so she could participate. Roko thought Casual Dress Day was a very good idea and especially enjoyed the boys in their bermudas and sun glasses! She had a little trouble getting used to the boys at school, for in Ja- pan she went to an all girls' school. Roko didn't have much leisure time as she had to study hard. When she did have a few spare min- utes, she usually leafed through magazines, although it was hard for her to read them. She loved rock 'n roll and learned to dance as we do. We'1l always remember Roko for her quick, friendly smile and her eagerness to meet and know everybody she could. And now that the year has drawn to a close, we have to say, Good-bye to our friend from across the seas. But to you, Roko, we, the students of Clinton High, wish all the happiness in the world! Fellow classmates cheerfully introduce Roko to American History. Roko, with her American sister Prudence Petersen, enjoys the first snowfall of the season. --sv. The others are: to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, and to promote worthy leadership. The Clinton chapter of National Honor Society requires that each member have at least a B average, besides upholding the other three ideals, Leadership, Character, and Service. Our Clinton chapter was organized in 1946 in order to give scholastic recognition. Each quarter they compute the homeroom standings to determine the homeroom's rank, This year there were twenty-three seniors and six juniors in National Honor Society with the second induction of the year scheduled for spring. iATIO AL H0 011 UCIETY ROW 1, L- R: Tufford, Lanaghan, Nelson, Whalen, Hague, Bisson, Wynes, Lewis. ROW 3 Brothers, Van Loo, Ryder, Hammond, Clausen, Hunter, Motsinger, After a slow start, the Kings ended their season with a record of 2-5-1. They were denied a chance for a third victory when the game with Moline was cancelled because of snow. The 1-5-1 record was good for eighth place in the valley. Clinton's newly installed lowa winged-T offense was stalled in early games because of inclement weather. Midway through the season the River Kings changed to a TCU type spread. We opened the season with a 20-12 loss to East Moline 's Panthers as the Kings were unable to hold their potent offense in check. The next game with Jefferson was a deadlock, 6-6. Clinton missed a chance to score again, late in the game, when they fumbled inside Jefferson's 10 yard line. Rock Island humbled the Kings 33-7 to start a four game Clinton losing streak. We again scored first, on a 65 yard run by Keith Johnson, but were unable to match Rock lsland 's speed. Our Kings put up a spirited battle against Washington of Cedar Rapids before losing 13-6. lt was 7-6 at half- time, but the Warriors pushed across for a touchdown in the last quarter. 138 vi . ...... Nothing went right for the River Kings and they wound up with a minus total in rushing yards. Homecoming fans were dazzled by the running of Little Hawk backs and the impressive passing of Iowa City's Frosty Evashevski. Clinton used its spread offense for the first time but still could not match Iowa City as the Kings lost 40-13. The River Kings journeyed to Municipal Stadium in Davenport next where they met Assumption's Knights. Lady Luck had a kind fate waiting for us in the mud and rain as the Kings blanked the Knights 20-0. Tom Waldorf es- tablished himself as a versatile performer when he passed for one touchdown and ran for another. The season 's climax came in the next game as our River Kings defeated Dubuque 21-19. On a frozen field Clinton raced to two first quarter touchdowns using tennis shoes while the Rams floundered in their cleats. This lead proved too much of an obstacle for Dubuque and the Kings won their second in a row. Clinton 's scores came on three passes from Tom Waldorf to John Rashke. 139 ROW 1, L-R, McDaniel, Huginin, Maniccia, Rajcevich, Wilke, Edens, Spooner Thompson Judd ROW 2 Mil ler, Voge, Cole, Nesbitt, Nielson, Langfitt, Krebs, Cozzolino, Goettsch ROW 3 Geronzin Conroy, Lange, Jeffrey Pearson, Bentley, Krajnovich, Matzen, Brown, Neubauer. Clinton High 's basketball team finished strong compiling an ll-8 season's record. ln Mississippi Valley play the River Kings were 9-7, which was good for fifth place. Washington, in fourth place, was the only Iowa team to finish ahead of the Kings. The first game in the newly completed W. J. Yourd Gymnasium saw Clinton nipping Fulton 57-55 in a sudden death, double overtime. Rashke and Shannon each provided a free throw to give the River Kings the necessary two points for a successful inaugral of the fieldhouse. Muscatine was the Kings next victim, 71-56. A 69-39 thumping of Jeffer- son followed the loss to Sterling, Illinois. Our eagers jumped out to an early lead and the J-Hawks never threatened. The low spot of the season began with a 55-48 loss to xr Moline's Maroons. This was followed by successive losses to East Moline, Davenport, and Washington. Clinton's net- men responded, however, and won eight of their last eleven games beginning with a 52 -45 defeat of Iowa City. Dubuque came after Iowa City. Following a halftime tie, the River Kings pulled away for a 69-53 victory. Rock Island tested Clinton's mettle to the tune of 64-46. With a full court press, the Kings came within six points in the fourth quarter but were unable to go ahead. Jefferson fell 71-46, to start Clinton on a four game winning against some of thc best teams in the Valley. It was Clinton 71, Moline 50 on the Maroons home floor. East Moline's Panther's felt the River King's wrath next, 66-51. This game was also played away from home. Revenge was gained against Washington, 48-45. The Kings came from behind showing considerable poise to whip the Warriors. Clinton's winning streak was halted against Rock Island. Our River Kings played a fine game, but lost 57 -50 to the highly-rated Rocks. The next night Iowa City's Little Hawks took advantage of seven straight field goals at the start of the game to defeat Clinton, 64-50. Dubuque's Rams tried to stall and almost succeeded. They led 10-5 at halftime, but Clinton scored 39 points in the last half enroute to a 44-24 victory. In the last regular season game the River Kings came through with a rough and tumble 69-53 win over the Davenport Blue Devils. In a game marked with many personal fouls, a technical foul, and several injuries, Clinton established itself as a definite toumament threat. In toumament play the River Kings came within one game of a state finals X A berth but were defeated by X Muscatine 64-51 in the dis- I V trict finals. In winning 10 of their last 14 games the Kings showed themselves as good as any team around. In the first game of the sectionals, Clinton toyed with Bettendorf for two and a half quarters before breaking loose to a 79-28 victory. No one could miss as the River Kings rolled to their highest offense total of the year. The sectional final against Davenport pro- vided what was probably the climax of the season. Why were but these three Chosen to linger afar? The answer is told By lantern nor star. In the midst of a storm Search for the light, Look for the break of dawn And not for the night. Why, and again why Questions my restless mind Did it have to be the good The pure of heart, the kind? Gone are they now, But in memory they remain. With their goals known on earth, Their death is not in vain. Remember them always, Their laughter, their smile, The joy that we shared For just a small while. It was of great cause They were called by their loveg Their hope of tomorrow Was answered above. Daniel Kraft Nancy McClary Kathi Pearsen EMORIA BY MARILYN Gomscu 4.111 JIM .
